Steven Colbert: Unraveling the "Fast & Furious" Scandal

The "Fast and Furious" gun-tracking program was an unconscionable waste of money to promote senseless acts of violence, just like the movies for which it was named. (02:59).

A Contempt of Congress citation is toothless and little is likely to happen to Attorney General Eric Holder.

Obama should return the favor to the "do nothing " 112th Congress and refuse to cooperate using Executive Privilege.

Democrats poised to take back the House

Uploaded by  on Nov 10, 2011
A goal-shattering 107 Democratic House candidates are ready to take the fight to Republicans in Congress, and numerous public opinion polls show voters prefer Democratic candidates over Republicans.

Tea Party Republicans have clearly worn out their welcome with the American people and buyer's remorse has taken a firm hold of voters.

Rightardai thinks the Democrats have a good chance of taking back the House. They will  have an uphill battle in the Senate.

Unfortunately the Founders established a system in which it is hard to get any thing done unless you win the two legislative branches and the presidency.

112th Congress is in deep doo doo

ploaded by  on Aug 31, 2011

More than three weeks into recess, House Republicans continue to take heat from their constituents for their failed budget priorities and for choosing to protect millionaires and Big Oil instead of protecting Medicare and seniors.

The temperature is rising for House Republicans as they try to defend the indefensible.

The approval rating of the 112th congress is 13 per cent, the lowest in US history since Gallup started conducting this poll in 1974.

POLITICO.com: Florida to pickup two congressional seats

By RICHARD E. COHEN | 9/26/10 5:55 PM EDT Updated: 9/26/10 6:14 PM EDT

A new estimate of House reapportionment gains and losses resulting from this year’s Census reveals a larger-than-expected impact on Florida and New York.

According to Election Data Services, which reviewed new Census data from a private-sector demographic firm, Florida would gain two House seats and New York would lose two seats.

They would join two other states that already were projected to have multiple-seat changes. Based on the tentative Census data, Texas is expected to gain four House seats and Ohio likely will lose two seats.

According to the EDS estimate, six other states each would gain one seat: Arizona, Georgia, Nevada, South Carolina, Utah and Washington.

Eight states would each lose one seat: Illinois, Iowa, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania.

In addition to the Florida and New York changes, the other major switch in the projected reapportionment is that Missouri will lose a House seat instead of Minnesota, according to EDS President Kimball Brace.

He released the study for a redistricting seminar of the National Conference of State Legislature in Providence, Rhode Island, this weekend.

Although these estimates likely will be close to the official outcome, there are no guarantees until the Census Bureau’s scheduled announcement in late December of the final Census population totals for the 50 states. With those numbers, a long-standing statutory formula will quickly apportion the 435 House seats.

That, in turn, will lead to the state-by-state redistricting of House seats, which will revise the congressional maps for the 2012 election.

In Texas, Republicans are expected to retain control of the legislature and Republican Gov. Rick Perry has a small lead over Democratic challenger Bill White.

Even with complete GOP control of redistricting, however, the surge in Hispanic population likely will result in a Democratic gain of one or two of the expected four new seats—including one each in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex and in the Houston metropolitan area.

Republicans expect to add a seat in the Austin-San Antonio region and in other rapidly-growing suburban areas. There could be significant redistricting tweaks in heavily Hispanic border districts, which have had large population gains, and in sprawling rural areas where population has been relatively stagnant.

Zogby: Dems beat GOP in Congresional Poll

UTICA, New York - Barely one-in five likely voters approve of the job Congress is doing, according to a new Zogby Interactive survey. Broken down by party, just 25% say they approve of Republican job performance in Congress and 37% approve of the Democrats.

The Interactive survey of 2,067 likely voters was conducted from July 23-26 and has a margin of error of +/-2.2%.

The Democrat advantage over Republicans in job approval is largely due to getting better ratings among independents and because a majority of Republicans do not approve of their party's performance.

The same poll found Republicans leading Democrats, 43%-40%, on the question of which party's candidate they planned to vote for in this year's Congressional election.

Michael Steele: The House is in the bag

Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele got a little ahead of himself Sunday when he referred to House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) as "Speaker Boehner."

"When you lose the governorship of New Jersey, you better be paying attention," Steele said on ABC's "This Week," trying to make as much as possible of the GOP's dual wins in Virginia and New Jersey. "There's a reason why you lost. It has nothing to do with the president's popularity. Independents came to (New Jersey Gov.-elect) Chris Christie and (Virginia Gov.-elect) Bob McDonnell because they had something to say."

Actually the Democrats have lost New Jersey before and Gov. Jon Corzine was not a popular governor.  Intrade suggests that the GOP has a long way to go to recover the House.

NY Republicans Consider Punishing Dede Scozzafava for Backing Dem

Posted: 11/6/09

Republicans careen toward the abyss in New York.

Rightardia suggests the GOP got exactly what they deserved by fiddling with a congressional election: a loss of safe seat that had been in GOP hands since the Civil War. Rep. Dede Scozzafava would be welcome to join the Democratic Party.

Republican leaders in New York may "punish" state Rep. Dede Scozzafava, who withdrew from the race for Congress in New York's 23rd district and endorsed a Democrat, in the Los Angeles Times' Top of the Ticket reports.

Scozzafava endorsed Bill Owens after national Republicans backed third-party candidate Doug Hoffman and undermined support for her campaign. Conservatives said Scozzafava, who supports gay rights and abortion rights, was too liberal to run as a Republican.

New York Assembly Minority Leader Brian Kolb has been holding meetings with Scozzafava, in which he expressed his displeasure with her endorsement. He has openly considered removing her as the GOP floor leader.

Vatican Official: Church Erred in Holding Kennedy Funeral

09/22/09

In a speech last Friday night to a gathering of Catholic conservatives at the Mayflower Hotel in Washington, an American archbishop now heading the Vatican version of the church's Supreme Court said that politicians who support gay marriage or abortion rights cannot receive sacraments without publicly repenting their ways:

"It is not possible to be a practicing Catholic and to conduct oneself in this manner," said Archbishop Raymond L. Burke, whom the pope transferred to Rome in 2008 after Burke's checkered tenure as archbishop of St. Louis.

"Neither Holy Communion nor funeral rites should be administered to such politicians," Burke said. "To deny these is not a judgment of the soul, but a recognition of the scandal and its effects."

The remarks come from an account of the 50-minute speech by Deal Hudson, director of InsideCatholic.com, a conservative Web site that hosted the Sept. 18 annual gala for some 200 supporters.

Cardinal Sean O'Malley earlier this month rejected the denial of sacraments "in the strongest terms," as he wrote in a blog post:
"We will stop the practice of abortion by changing the law, and we will be successful in changing the law if we change people's hearts. We will not change hearts by turning away from people in their time of need and when they are experiencing grief and loss," O'Malley wrote.

"At times, even in the Church, zeal can lead people to issue harsh judgments and impute the worst motives to one another. These attitudes and practices do irreparable damage to the communion of the Church."

50,000 Muslims to Pray on Capitol Hill: Our time has come

09/24/09

The event sounds like yet another Tea Party protest, or perhaps a repeat of last weekend's Values Voter Summit: Devout believers joining together this Friday to pray on Capitol Hill for the soul of America.

Who could argue with that? Well, when the believers happen to be Muslims, and there could be as many as 50,000 of them kneeling to pray in Arabic, yes, you could see how there might be some blowback from the usual suspects. This event should be close to the same size as the Teabagging event on September 12th.

Indeed, the online publication from David Horowitz, FrontPageMag.com, sounded the alarm in an article titled "Taking Islamism to the Streets," and the title of the "9/12 Project" post is simply, "OUTRAGED!"

The writers at "Bare Naked Islam" are calling the event "disgusting" and "treasonous" and warn that "50,000 Muslims, terrorists, and terrorist sympathizers" will turn the Capitol into "a giant outdoor mosque." Charisma magazine, a mainstream Pentecostal publication, quoted Christians in its account saying things like, "It is warfare time."

The most organized pushback so far is from a new organization of a nativist bent called Stop Islamization of America (SIOA). It describes itself as a group of "scholar warriors/ideological warriors in the cause of American freedom and Constitutional government"-- and defines Islam as against those things. SIOA is using Friday's event, "Islam on Capitol Hill," as a launchpad for the group and to stage a counterprotest.

But perhaps the most intriguing objections to this unprecedented event have come from within the American Muslim community itself.

"The truth may not be welcome, but remains truth: thousands of Muslims lining up for silent prayer in unison, within sight of the center of American government, is going to be misconstrued as an intimidation rather than an outreach, and not just to the rabid Islamophobic fringe," wrote Aziz Poonawalla, a Muslim blogger at Beliefnet, in a post last Friday.

"It really doesn't help that the official slogan for the event plastered all over the Web site is 'Our time has come.' Or that when you load the official homepage, you are blasted with audio of a thickly accented Islamic prayer."

"It's unwise to ignore the effect of such an event upon the paranoid segment of the American public -- who were out in force at the Tea Party last week on the National Mall -- who will certainly see the event as a threatening gesture which only validates their racism and Islamophobia."

US Congress passes auto trade-In bill

The House passed legislation Tuesday afternoon that would authorize $4 billion for an auto trade-in program designed to boost demand consumer demand for cars and trucks. Germany was one of the first countries in Europe to offer such a program. One of the problems was that all the autos traded in for the rebate were to be junked. Many unscrupulous used car dealers tried to resell some of the vehicles that had been turned in for the rebate.

Economists Ulrich Blum and Sabine Freye, authors of the Halle Institute study admit the rebates may have prevented long-term damage to the auto industry if an extended downturn had continued. The German program has benefited Ford and a Polish company that makes economy cars. It has not benefited some German companies like Mercedes Benz and BMW who make luxury cars. A similar program in France was initially successful, but auto sales have been dropping off.

The vote was comfortably more than the two-thirds majority required to pass the bill under suspension of the rules for a fast-tracking.

The final bill (HR 2751) would provide to $4,500 in cash rebates to help people who trade in cars or SUVs with a combined fuel economy of 18 miles per gallon or less to buy newer, more fuel-efficient vehicles.

Movement on the legislation want to avert the closure of thousands of auto dealerships as Chrysler LLC and General Motors Corp. struggle to emerge from bankruptcy. Obama has endorsed the trade-in concept.

Rep. Chris Van Hollen, D-Md., House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, D-Md., and more than 100 other lawmakers wrote to Obama late last week, threatening legislative action if the dealers are forced to close. Some lawmakers want to change laws so that auto dealers will be protected by state motor vehicle franchise laws. The auto makers would likely oppose such legislation because some of these auto dealers have sweetheart dealers that have hurt the auto industry for years.

It is also interesting that the auto dealers would have such influence over House Democratic leaders. MSNBC estimated that 80 per cent of auto dealer political contributions go to Republicans.

The one-year trade-in program would start upon enactment of the legislation, rather than being retroactive. Vehicles made before model year 1984 would be ineligible for the rebate. The compromise also reduced a proposed fine for violating any provision of the legislation to $15,000 from $25,000. This is a bad idea in view of the problems in Germany with used car dealers truing to resell the autos traded in for rebates.

Under the bill, consumers could receive a voucher for up to $4,500 for the purchase or lease of a new, fuel-efficient passenger car, SUV or truck upon trading in an eligible vehicle.

To receive a $3,500 voucher, the consumer must purchase a new car that gets at least four more miles per gallon more: for $4,500, the new car must have a mileage rating at least 10 mpg higher.

For a light-duty truck or SUV, the old truck must have a mileage rating of 18 mpg or less. To receive a $3,500 voucher, a consumer must purchase a new vehicle rated at least 2 mpg higher. To receive a $4,500 voucher, the new vehicle must get at least 5 mpg more.

Large vans and pickups that are work trucks are also eligible for the program, but the requirements are different.

The bill would require that trade-ins be "crushed or shredded.” It would allow the person responsible for the crushing or shredding to sell off vehicle parts other than the engine block or the drive train.

Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., has introduced alternative legislation in the Senate favored by some environmental advocates.

Minority Whip Eric Cantor, R-Va., criticized the bill for not not making used cars with good fuel economy eligible for the cash rebate, saying that families who can't afford to buy a new car "deserve the same opportunity." Cantor seems to be unable to see the forest between the trees.
