ThinkProgress: 40 Economists Say The GOP Has Abandoned Economic Reality

A survey of forty economists from across the ideological and partisan spectrum has concluded that on some of its most cherished issues, the Republican Party has simply taken leave of economic reality.

This is why the GOP house should be replaced with Democrats. ideologues and ditto heads who cannot pass the laws the nation needs to progress. The 112th House passed 75 bills, which is far short of the usual 200. It has an overall approval rating of 17 per cent, the worst in the history of the Gallup Poll.

Yet the GOP is expected to retain control of the House.

In the Senate, the GOP may gain a one to two seat advantage, too.

How is this possible?

No one said Americans are astute about politics as the graphic that follows suggests.

Why Republicans have lost their mojo

In the past, after Super Tuesday, The GOP would have a nominee. The RNC tried to create more interesting primary by awarding delegates proportionally. This approach worked for the Democrats because they had a two strong candidates: Obama and Hillary.

Michael Steele also pointed out that the GOP "winner take all" primaries disenfranchised the states that voted after Super Tuesday. Steele changed the primary rules. Many Republicans are blaming Steele for the inability of the GOP to unite behind one candidate because  of the primary rules change.
Mitt Romney has a large bank account, but his political stock is low

However, the real problem is the GOP is offered a weak slate of candidates. In the past a 90 pound weakling like Romney with a huge war chest could vanquish his opponents.

Making the GOP primaries more democratic isn't helping a party that is essentially undemocratic and is more interested in winning the election than picking the "people's choice."

Rightardia looked at a Gallup Poll that compared the enthusiasm that Republicans had for their candidates in 2008 and 2012. John McCain had a higher  enthusiasm rating in 2008 than Mittens has in 2012.

Of interest, the enthusiasm level for Mittens in 2008 was almost unchanged in 2012. Mittens political stock peaked in 2008 and hasn't gone up.

Both Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum are trying to sell their conservative credentials. Rightrdia doesn't think conservatism will sell after GW Bush. We agree with Michael Steel that the Republicans are off message and grasping for a political straw.

Of course, this is is party that has historically has been two dimensional, running on tax cutting and defense.

You don''t see Republicans saying too much about tax cuts because the news media has been breaking their ideas down with tables and graphics showing how the GOP favors the one per cent.

After a decade of war in Iraq and Afghanistan, Americans are not interested in more military misadventures in Syria or Iran.

The problems the GOP is facing in the general election are obvious: a weak front runner, one who is weaker than John McCain, The  loss of luster for conservative credentials and the inability to run on issues that have resonated with the electorate in the past are hurting the GOP.

Mittens is starting to feel campaign funds pinch

Mittens is starting to feel the campaign funds pinch which is surprising considering his wealth. He is having to spend more time courting contributors for his campaign,

See the article Rightardia wrote on the Gallup Poll on the GOP enthusiasm gap: http://rightardia.blogspot.com/2012/03/more-enthusiasm-for-gramps-in-2008-than.html

At the same time the Obama campaign has started in earnest. The national polls should be interesting in the next couple of weeks. We will also watch the Intrade stats.

Obama favorability dropping?

Rightrdia heard that Obama's favorability was dropping yesterday. Well, the Gallup Poll doesn't support that opinion.
Intrade doesn't support this conclusion either.

Obama favorability milestone

The weak showing of Mitt Romney in Iowa didn't help him. But it appears to have helped Obama.

Gallup Poll: Obama approval rises

The GOP is falling all over itself after the navy SEALS took out Osama Bin Laden. The Petty party would have been better off by remaining silent on the matter.

Some Republicans even suggested that Bin Laden isn't really dead. However, Al-Qaeda announced today on militant web sites that their leader is dead, but that his blood will not be wasted.

Republicans should know that it is hard to argue with success.

Bill Maher: Governing With GOP “Is Like Rooming With A Meth Addict”

Maher’s thesis is the right wing lacks focus on real issues.

He list of “useless distractions that make up the Republican Party agenda” – included public unions, Sharia law, anchor babies, the “Ground Zero mosque,” NPR, and the “war on Christmas,” among others.

Perhaps this is why John Boehner held an emergency congressional meeting.  In mid-March, the 212th congress had an 18 per cent approval rating according to Gallup.

Zogby showed the approval rating at 25 per cent.

Gallup Poll: Once Americans got a wiff of the new GOP Congress

They started holding their noses once the 212th Congress got in session.

Americans' opinions of Congress have not been positive, with an average 34% approval rating since Gallup began tracking congressional approval in 1974.

But the recent approval ratings for Congress have been among the lowest in Gallup's 37-year trend.

Congress' approval rating has been below 20% in the past 15 of 39 months, including a record-low 13% last December after the elections.

Gallup Poll: Obama Approval Slipping Among Liberals and progresives

Job Approval Rating for President Obama Among Liberal Democrats, Recent Gallup Weekly Averages

December 16, 2010

by Jeffrey M. Jones
PRINCETON, NJ -- Liberal Democrats approval of the job he is doing has fallen noticeably since the midterms.

For the first time, Obama' approval  dropped below 80% in the week after the announcement of the tax deal he brokered with congressional Republicans.

Few progressive blogs approved of the Obama tax compromise.  The tax cuts for the top two per of Americans will increase the deficit by nearly a trillion dollars in the next 10 years.

Obama should have left the Estate Tax off of the table. Bush suspended the Estate Tax which has been around since 1915. This tax is the one of the few safety valves that prevents the US from expanding the oligarchy of the affluent, a plutocracy.

Obama should have known better. it will take him along time to re-establish trust with many liberals and progressives. The president appears to be plodding and timid at times.

Rightardia recently read that the Senate is going to change the filibuster rules. Why didn't they do this right after the 2008 elections or after a couple of months of GOP stonewalling?

If they had, we would now have a public option and a health bill in two to three months instead of a year, a START treaty, and federal judges would be seated instead of the historic level of vacancies we have in the judiciary.

We agree with Obama's self assessment.  He has not been a successful president. We hope this changes.

Wikileaks disclosures has little effect on Obama's approval rating

Rightardia has noticed that whenever Obama is abroad his ratings plummet on the Gallup Poll.

We wondered how the Wikileaks revelations might affect his presidency. so far it has not. His approval ratings have been stable for the past 5 days.

Gallup: Obama approval rating rises 11/17/2010

Of interest Gallup indicate there is no clear GOP front runner for president. The best any candidate can do is grab 19 per cent of conservative voters.

The Tea Party could complicate the 2012 presidential election for the GOP, particularly if a Tea Party candidate runs for president.

Gallup Poll: Republicans Remain Disproportionately White and Religious

September 1, 2010

by Frank Newport

PRINCETON, NJ -- About 9 out of 10 Republicans are non-Hispanic whites, and more than half of these are highly religious. That compares with 62% of the Democratic rank-and-file that is white and largely less religious, with blacks and Hispanics making up a much more substantial part of that party's base.

Racial and Ethnic Composition of Partisan Groups, January-August 15 Gallup Polling

These results are based on aggregated data from more than 220,000 Americans surveyed as part of Gallup Daily tracking. Whites classified as highly religious are those who say religion is important in their daily lives and who report attending religious services weekly or almost every week. Hispanics include everyone who identifies as Hispanic, regardless of race.

The mixture of religion and politics in the United States came to the fore again this past weekend at Glenn Beck's high-visibility "Restoring Honor" rally in Washington, D.C. Beck mentioned God and religion frequently in his remarks.

The rally was billed as nonpolitical, but the presence of former vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin, and Beck's involvement with the politically oriented Tea Party movement . . .brought a political perspective to the event.

Gallup Daily tracking data reviewed in this analysis confirm that religion, along with race, is a significant factor in defining Republicans, independents, and Democrats. Eighty-eight percent of Republicans are white, compared with 71% of independents and 62% of Democrats. The majority of white Republicans are highly religious, while the substantial majority of white Democrats are less religious.

All in all, 47% of Republicans in the U.S. today can be classified as highly religious whites, compared with 24% of independents and 19% of Democrats.

PRINCETON, NJ -- Democrats have a 48% to 44% advantage for the week of July 19-25 in Gallup tracking of registered voters' preferences for the 2010 congressional elections. This marks the second straight week in which Democrats have held an edge of at least four percentage points.

Gallup: What a difference a day makes

The Republicans have been trying to use a CNN Poll to indicate that they speak for America, something that pollster John Zogby found alarming. This is what the latest Gallup Poll shows about the public reaction to the health care bill passing:

Democrats overwhelmingly supported the bill with a even split among Independents. This poll suggests that making the health care law an election issue would not benefit the GOP. Trying to derail the law will not benefit Republicans either.

Hillbilly Report: Gallup Finds a Still Democratic Nation

Image via Wikipedia

by: RDemocrat
Tue Feb 02, 2010 at 11:03:00 AM EST

Despite recent gains and despite all the radio talk show bluster about America being a center-right nation, Gallup has found that contrary to what some want to believe,  America is still a very Democratic nation. When broken down, the numbers are staggering and trend heavily towards the Democratic Party.

These results are based on aggregated data from Gallup Daily tracking in 2009, including interviews with more than 350,000 adults in all 50 states plus the District of Columbia.

Gallup conducted at least 1,000 interviews in every state except Wyoming (878), North Dakota (968), Delaware (997), and the District of Columbia (632). Gallup interviewed more than 20,000 residents each in California, Texas, New York, and Pennsylvania.

Nationwide, party support shifted in a slightly more Republican direction in 2009 after a historically strong Democratic year in 2008. Overall, 49% of Americans in 2009 identified as Democrats or said they were independent but leaned to the Democratic Party, while 41% identified as Republicans or were Republican-leaning independents. That 8-point Democratic advantage compares to a 12-point, 52% to 40%, Democratic advantage in 2008.

Thus, even with the reduction in Democratic strength, the party still maintained a solid advantage over the Republicans nationally last year. It follows, then, that most states continued to be Democratic in their political orientation.

POLITICO.com: Dems rip Rasmussen

By ALEX ISENSTADT | 1/2/10 5:53 PM EST

Democrats are turning their fire on Scott Rasmussen, the prolific 'independent pollster' whose surveys on elections, President Obama’s popularity and a host of other issues are surfacing in the media with increasing frequency.

The pointed attacks reflect a hardening conventional wisdom among prominent liberal bloggers and many Democrats that Rasmussen Reports polls are the result of a flawed polling model and designed to undermine Democratic politicians and the party’s national agenda.

On progressive-oriented websites, anti-Rasmussen sentiment is an article of faith. “Rasmussen Caught With Their Thumb on the Scale,” blared the Daily Kos this summer. “Rasmussen Reports, You Decide,” the blog Swing State Project recently headlined in a play on the Fox News motto.

“I don’t think there are Republican polling firms that get as good a result as Rasmussen does,” said Eric Boehlert, a senior fellow with Media Matters, a progressive research center. “His data looks like it all comes out of the RNC [Republican National Committee].”

“Whether intended or not, Rasmussen polls have been used by conservative voices as talking points, and when that happens on one side it inevitably produces a reaction from the other,” explained Mark Blumenthal, a polling analyst and the editor and publisher of Pollster.com.

“Rasmussen produces a lot of data that appear to produce narratives conservatives are promoting, and that causes a reaction.”

While Scott Rasmussen, the firm’s president, contends that he has no ax to grind — his bio notes that he has been “an independent pollster for more than a decade” and “has never been a campaign pollster or consultant for candidates seeking office” — his opponents on the left insist he is the hand that feeds conservative talkers a daily trove of negative numbers that provides grist for attacks on Obama and the Democratic Party.

Meida Matters recently cited a really dreadful Rasmussen poll. Rasmussen noted that:

Seventy-one percent (71%) of all voters think the attempt by the Nigerian Muslim to blow up the airliner as it landed in Detroit should be investigated by military authorities as a terrorist act. Only 22% say it should be handled by civilian authorities as a criminal act, as is currently the case.

Meida matters concluded:

Why is it an either/or question? Why are respondents asked to pick between a "military" terrorist investigation and "civilian" criminal investigation?  It makes no sense. First of all, a terrorist investigation, by definition, is a criminal one. Second, it's the FBI (i.e. a "civilian" authority) that has been investigating "terrorists acts" in this country for generations.

Civilian authorities launch terrorist investigations all the time, so why does Rasmussen pretend that only "military authorities" do that? Why does Rasmussen suggest that if civilians investigate Ft. Hood, then it won't be a terrorist investigation? Why did Rasmussen formulate a question that makes no sense?

Rightardia would agree that Rasmussen Polls that are regularly featured on Newsmax are flawed. We use the Gallup Poll and the Zogby International Polls as well as polls form mainstream media like ABC News and CNN.
