FL attorney general wants to disenfranchise voters again

Here we go again. Make no mistake about this decision.  It is an attempt to disenfranchise black people who served their time. Before the 2000 elections, Jeb Bush disenfranchised nearly 100,000 voters.

The company that came up with the "purge" list has, under threat of suit from the NAACP, confessed that the total purge targeted 94,000 voters -- and only 3,000 may have been illegal voters who were felons.

This "scrub list" in Florida caused Al Gore to lose by "537" votes after GW Bush used the voting rights law in the Supreme court to pull out the victory.

Al Gore is to blame, too. He only actively campaigned in 17 states. Obama didn't make the same mistake.

Most of the people on the list should have been legally allowed to vote. They were prevented from voting by Katherine Harris, former Florida Secretary of State, and Jeb Bush, to steer Florida into the GOP column.

Boss Fires salesman for Voting for Obama

By JOE HARRIS

KANSAS CITY, Kan. - A salesman says he was fired for voting for Barack Obama. His boss sent an email to all employees warning that he would fire them if they voted for Barack Obama.

He claims Matthew Brandt, the owner of KK Office Solutions, sent the email threat to "All Employees" on Oct. 29, 2008. The email  warned them "to rethink your vote on November 4th."

Elliot Snell sued KK Office Solutions in Wyandotte County Court. The email warned that if Obama were elected, all salespeople will have to pool their sales commissions to give underachieving salespeople a "fair shake;" that hourly employees will pool their wages, including overtime, to help those who are "too busy to for overtime;" that top management was to be referred to as "the government," and would be exempt from pooling because the law doesn't apply to it; and that the last few people hired "should clean out their desks."

The email also stated:

"Don't feel bad though, because President Obama will give you free healthcare, free handouts, free oil for heating your home, free food stamps, and he'll let you stay in hour home for as long as you want even if you can't pay your mortgage.

If you appeal directly to our democratic congress [sic], you might even get a free flat screen TV and a coupon for free haircuts ..." It concludes: "If for any reason you are not happy with the new policies, you many want to rethink your vote on November 4th," followed by Brandt's signature and title.

Snell says he openly supported Obama, and was fired on Nov. 20, 2008, despite acquiring more than $300,000 in accounts during his 6 months with KK Office Solutions.

He seeks reinstatement, lost pay and damages of $1.2 million.

Rightardia wishes Mr. Brandt success. Wirehead, out technical editor, has encountered businessmen trying to steer workers to vote Republican in his last job before the 2008 election. In addition, the health care industry has encouraging it workers to support Tea Party and Astro Turfer 'faux protests.'

Russia wants an extra $1.2 bln for Admiral Gorshkov carrier

15:2906/08/2009
MOSCOW, August 6 (RIA Novosti) - Russia is hoping to reach an agreement with India in August on an additional $1.2 billion to finalize the overhaul of the Admiral Gorshkov aircraft carrier for the Indian Navy, a Russian newspaper said on Thursday.
The next round of talks to determine the final funding amount for the carrier's repair and modernization is due to take place in India within the next few days.

According to Nezavisimaya Gazeta newspaper, India has no alternative but to allocate the required $1.2 bln, despite recent objections from the government's accounting office.

The Indian Navy desperately needs to replace its INS Viraat, which, although currently operational, is now 50 years old.

Under the original $1.5 billion 2004 contract between Russia's state-run arms exporter Rosoboronexport and the Indian Navy, which includes delivery of MiG-29K Fulcrum carrier-based fighters, the work on the aircraft carrier was to have been completed in 2008.

However, Russia later claimed it had underestimated the scale and the cost of the modernization, and asked for an additional $1.2 billion, which New Delhi said was "exorbitant."

After long-running delays and disputes, India offered in February 2008 to raise the refit costs for the aircraft carrier, docked at the Sevmash shipyard in northern Russia for the past 12 years, by up to $600 million.

Russia said it was not satisfied with the proposed amount and the issue of the additional funding remains unresolved.

The Times of India newspaper said earlier that the deal had been criticized by India's Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) that called the ship "junk" in a July report.

"It can be seen that the Indian Navy was acquiring a second-hand refitted aircraft carrier that had half the life span of and was 60 percent more expensive that a new one," said the report.

However, Indian defense minister's aide Pallam Raji has recently said the Indian authorities are ready to consider Russia's proposal to raise the price of the deal by $1.2billion.

Konstantin Makiyenko, deputy director of the Center for Strategic Analysis, a Moscow based think tank, has said that the Indian government will most likely agree on the new deal considering that China has launched an ambitious aircraft carrier construction program.

He reiterated that India's only aircraft carrier - INS Viraat - will be decommissioned in the next few years, while construction of its own aircraft carrier would take much longer than the remaining overhaul of the Russian warship.

"Basically, India does not have an alternative but to agree [on the deal]," he said.
Russia has pledged to finish the Admiral Gorshkov's overhaul as soon as possible and deliver it to India in 2012 if the additional $1.2 bln funding is provided by New Delhi.

After modernization, the carrier will join the Indian Navy as INS Vikramaditya, and is expected to be seaworthy for 30 years.

Admiral Gorshkov is a modified Kiev class aircraft carrier, originally named Baku.

The ship was laid down in 1978 at the Nikolayev South shipyard in Ukraine, launched in 1982, and commissioned with the Soviet Navy in 1987.

It was renamed after the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991.

In 1994, following a boiler room explosion, the Admiral Gorshkov sat in dock for a year for repairs. After a brief return to service in 1995, she was finally withdrawn from service in 1996 and put up for sale.

The ship's displacement is 45,000 tons. It has maximum speed of 32 knots and an endurance of 13,500 nautical miles (25,000 km) at a cruising speed of 18 knots.

New Department of Interrogation?

The intelligence agency lost credibility with Congress over allegedly withholding from them a secret plan to assassinate al Qaeda members.

The team would recruit from the FBI, CIA, and Pentagon to find members who can "research, master, and conduct non-coercive interrogations of detainees," including techniques outside of the Army Field Manual, the current standard.

However, these procedures were not followed during many of the integrations in Iraq and Afghanistan. Instead Search and Rescue Escape and Evasion training  techniques used to train US combatants were used.  These were derived from a communist interrogation manual that was captured during the Korean War.

Mikhail Kalashnikov invented one of the world's great assault rifles

    03 June, 2009, 10:33

Editor's Note: My brother was stationed in Vietnam and he preferred the AK-47 over the M16 that frequently jammed in Vietnam.  The AK-47 could even fire M16 rounds, but the M16 could not fire the AK-47 rounds.

His name is synonymous with an assault rifle which is the choice of millions of soldiers. Mikhail Kalashnikov is almost 90, and over 60 years ago he invented the AK-47 – so far the world's most popular small arms weapon.
After more than 60 years Kalashnikov’s invention remains highly praised for its durability, reliability and effectiveness.

But who is the man behind the rifle?

Born the year after the First World War’s end, and a veteran of the Great Patriotic War, Mikhail Kalashnikov designed his famous rifle to give Russia a weapon powerful enough to repel invaders.

Since 1947 Kalashnikov has lived and worked in the city of Izhevsk, continuing to develop and refine his weapon for the benefit of Russia.

There are estimated to be hundreds of millions of AK-47 rifles in circulation throughout the world.

“Its first advantage is its gas-operated action. It ensures the reliable and consistent operation. The second is an ingenious power-locking mechanism; it's very well designed. Generally speaking, the parameters of the entire system were selected so carefully that the weapon works flawlessly and reliably in all conditions,” says Mikhail Dragunov, Izh weapons factory senior engineer.

For more than 60 years, his design has served his country well and, despite his great fame and ingenuity, at 89 Mikhail Kalashnikov lives on an ordinary state pension. His life's work was completed for patriotism, not for profit.

But those who feel gratitude towards him span borders.

“I had the honor of accompanying him to several exhibitions in France, the UK and the US. When we went to the US for an exhibition, there was a whole line of those who just wanted to shake his hand. And everyone said, ‘Sir, thanks for a contribution to history. You made an excellent weapon.’ What else can be said for someone's renown?” says Elena Kalashnikova, the inventor’s daughter.

Mikhail Kalashnikov has long said that the fact his weapon fell into the hands of drug barons and terrorists as well as soldiers causes him great regret.

“Weapons should only be in the hands of those people who defend their country – that is, to defend, not to attack. I designed the rifle not for international conflicts, but to protect the borders of my homeland,” Kalashnikov says.

Supreme Court upholds the 1965 Voting Rights Act

Editor notes: The Voting Rights Act gave black Americans basic voting rights and helped overcome a century of Jim Crowe laws which suppressed minority voting. This law also led to the exodus of the Dixiecrats from the Democratic Party and the rise of the GOP in the South.

In a decision announced this morning, the Supreme Court upheld the 1965 Voting Rights Act -- a law that has done more to expand and strengthen our democracy than any other.

It's good news -- but the fight to protect voting rights doesn't end there. Attacks on this critical law will not stop. And voter suppression tactics will continue to plague our elections.

I recorded a short video about the fight to protect voting rights -- watch and share it today.

In the wake of an historic election, it's easy to reflect on how far we've come. But our democracy is still a work in progress.

I learned that first-hand as Al Gore's campaign manager in 2000.

Despite today's good news, it's clear that this isn't the end of the legal attacks on the Voting Rights Act -- and that the next case could result in the Supreme Court striking down a key protection.

It's time to recommit ourselves to the fight to protect voter rights and reform our electoral system so that no American is ever denied or deterred from the right to vote.

Watch my video, learn more -- and spread the word to your friends and family:
