Ria Novosti: US spy ring broken up in Iran and Lebanon

NEW YORK, November 22 (RIA Novosti) Several dozen spies working for the CIA in Iran and Lebanon have been caught, ABC News said, citing U.S. officials with connections to the intelligence community.

According to an exclusive ABC report on Monday, “the spies were paid informants recruited by the CIA for two distinct espionage rings targeting Iran and the Beirut-based Hezbollah organization.”

The officials, cited by ABC, admitted that the loss of the two U.S. spy rings in the Middle East represents “a setback of significant proportions in efforts to track the activities of the Iranian nuclear program and the intentions of Hezbollah against Israel.”

The exposure of the two spy networks was first announced in televised statements by Iranian and Hezbollah leaders in May and June, but these statements have been widely ignored by U.S. authorities and media.

ABC said Hezbollah's internal security arm identified at least a dozen informants and the identities of several CIA case officers through two double agents, who tipped Hezbollah of a place in Beirut where CIA officers were meeting with their assets.

Almost at the same time, Iranian counter-intelligence “cracked” a secret internet communication method used by CIA-paid assets in Iran, leading to alleged arrests of at least 30 U.S. and Israeli spies.

Several sources cited by ABC believe that the loss of two spy rings was “the result of a lack of professionalism in the U.S. intelligence community." Others say occasional setbacks are inevitable in such a “risky business” as espionage.

U.S. authorities have not commented on the report.

WMR: CIA informants inside Occupy Wall Street movement in NYC

October 19-20, 2011

In a page taken right out of the FBI's Counter-Intelligence Program (COINTELPRO) and the CIA's domestic spying operations from the 1960s, a handful of long-time CIA operatives have been detected among the key leadership of the Occupy Wall Street (OWS) movement in New York.

The CIA's penetration of OWS comes at the same time that a longtime CIA clandestine services officer, with field experience in Jordan and Pakistan, has been identified as a special assistant to the deputy commissioner of intelligence at the New York Police Department.

The CIA agent has been assigned to his NYPD duties since July. The stationing of the CIA liaison officer at the NYPD has the approval of CIA director David Petraeus.

Two former CIA officers, David Cohen and Larry Sanchez, helped establish the NYPD's new intelligence division. Sanchez left the NYPD in 2010 while Cohen remains as the Deputy Commissioner for Intelligence.

After retiring from the CIA but before taking his presenty job, Cohen worked for the "too-big-to-fail" American International Group (AIG), a company with longstanding links to the CIA, particularly in Asia.

This sounds like another abomination that the Patriot Act may allow. In the past, CIA agents could not conduct operations in the US unless foreign nationals were involved.

RT: US refuses to co-operate in probe over alleged CIA secret prisons

Published: 30 December, 2010, 12:35

The US is refusing to help Poland investigate claims of a secret CIA prison, which allegedly operated in the country between 2003 and 2005.

Warsaw prosecutors have spent the past two years looking into the supposed hidden facilities.

Washington's refusal to help was reported by a Polish news agency just days after a Palestinian terror suspect claimed he had been secretly shipped to the country and tortured in one of the prisons.

The US Department of Justice informed Warsaw that they would not provide legal assistance in this case since it may endanger national security and state interests. However, the request is classified, as well as the investigation.

The refusal by the American authorities does not definitely mean that the investigation in Poland will not lead to an explanation of this issue, believes Irmina Pacho, the co-ordinator of the Helsinki Human Rights Court's CIA observation program.

“It all depends on the materials gathered by the prosecutor, which may include serious proof and evidence,” she said.

According to international reports, and information well-known in the public domain, it is not only Poland that hosted a secret prison, but also Romania and Lithuania, added Pacho.

“There is definitely a need to conduct investigations in this matter in Europe, since as the events in 2010 show, the American courts are willing to close their door to victims of the problem,” she told RT.

This report indicates the UK was also involved in the secret detentions. Egypt was another country that operated a secret prison for the US.

CIA Fact Book challenge to US conservatives

Michel Chossudovsky from the Centre for Research of Globalisation in Canada argues that GDP is not representative of the actual strength of an economy, which could mean that China's economy is already the biggest in the world. China officially bypassed Japan as the number two economy in the world.

United States:
Government type: Constitution-based federal republic; strong democratic tradition Economy - overview:
The US has the largest and most technologically powerful economy in the world, with a per capita GDP of $46,400. In this market-oriented economy, private individuals and business firms make most of the decisions, and the federal and state governments buy needed goods and services predominantly in the private marketplace.

US business firms enjoy greater flexibility than their counterparts in Western Europe and Japan in decisions to expand capital plant, to lay off surplus workers, and to develop new products. At the same time, they face higher barriers to enter their rivals' home markets than foreign firms face entering US markets.

US firms are at or near the forefront in technological advances, especially in computers and in medical, aerospace, and military equipment; their advantage has narrowed since the end of World War II.

The onrush of technology largely explains the gradual development of a "two-tier labor market" in which those at the bottom lack the education and the professional/technical skills of those at the top and, more and more, fail to get comparable pay raises, health insurance coverage, and other benefits. Since 1975, practically all the gains in household income have gone to the top 20% of households.

China:
Government type: Communist state
Economy - overview:
China's economy during the past 30 years has changed from a centrally planned system that was largely closed to international trade to a more market-oriented economy that has a rapidly growing private sector and is a major player in the global economy.

Reforms started in the late 1970s with the phasing out of collectivized agriculture, and expanded to include the gradual liberalization of prices, fiscal decentralization, increased autonomy for state enterprises, the foundation of a diversified banking system, the development of stock markets, the rapid growth of the non-state sector, and the opening to foreign trade and investment.

Annual inflows of foreign direct investment rose to nearly $108 billion in 2008. China has generally implemented reforms in a gradualist or piecemeal fashion.

In recent years, China has re-invigorated its support for leading state-owned enterprises in sectors it considers important to "economic security," explicitly looking to foster globally competitive national champions. After keeping its currency tightly linked to the US dollar for years, China in July 2005 revalued its currency by 2.1% against the US dollar and moved to an exchange rate system that references a basket of currencies.

Cumulative appreciation of the renminbi against the US dollar since the end of the dollar peg was more than 20% by late 2008, but the exchange rate has remained virtually pegged since the onset of the global financial crisis.

The restructuring of the economy and resulting efficiency gains have contributed to a more than tenfold increase in GDP since 1978. Measured on a purchasing power parity (PPP) basis that adjusts for price differences, China in 2009 stood as the second-largest economy in the world after the US, although in per capita terms the country is still lower middle-income.

Assignment to al.politics Usenet conservatives:

1. Explain how the economic system of China, a communist country, has been able to surpass the economy of the US.

2. Explain this development using Supply side economic theory of Arthur Laffer.

Russia Today finally comments on Kyle Hatcher dipomatic 'expose'

24 September, 2009, 16:15

Rightardia comment:
The Kyle Hatcher video was heavily edited while the British consul video was not. It is possible the Russians suspect Hatcher of working for the CIA or he speaks Russian too well. Either is grounds for getting the boot from Russia.

The American embassy in Moscow has filed a protest to the Russian Foreign Ministry over a spicy video that appeared on the web allegedly featuring a US diplomat. The US State Department says the footage is a fabrication.

The controversial video, posted on the Internet in August, allegedly shows the 34-year-old diplomat talking on his mobile phone in the street, then cuts inside to a hotel room where a man resembling Kyle Hatcher is alone. After that it cuts into a darkened room where a man and a woman are having sex. It’s not clear whether it is Hatcher or not.
"We had our security office back in Washington take a look at that and they are convinced Kyle has done nothing wrong. I have full confidence in him and he is going to continue his work here at the embassy," said John Beyrle, US Ambassador to Russia.
According to him, the video was a montage of lot of different clips, “some of them which are clearly fabricated".
American officials reportedly suspect the footage was fabricated by the FSB – Russia's Federal Security Service.
John Beyrle filed the protest of over an "attempted smear" of Kyle Hatcher.
“This kind of effort to discredit an American diplomat really has no place in the sort of relationship that we are trying to build with the Russian Federation”, Beyrle said in an interview with ABC news.
Hatcher is responsible for contacts with religious and human rights groups in Russia.
The Russian Foreign Ministry hasn’t commented on the issue so far.
Meanwhile, it’s not the first sex scandal involving diplomats this year. In July, a British deputy consul in the Russian city of Yekaterinburg was sacked after he was secretly filmed having sex with two prostitutes.

Rep. Peter king is the one full of bull

The bellicose Rep. Peter King, the hawkish, maverick Long Island Republican, blasted a "disgraceful" Eric Holder for opening an investigation of CIA interrogators and criticized his own party for what he described as a weak kneed response to the move.

"It’s bulls***. It’s disgraceful. You wonder which side they’re on," he said of the attorney general's move. He described the Holder investigation as a "declaration of war against the CIA, and against common sense."

King is the the ranking Republican on the House Committee on Homeland Security and a member of the House Select Committee on Intelligence.
King defended in detail the interrogation practices — threats to kill a detainee's family, and or to kill a detainee with a power drill — detailed in a CIA inspector general report released yesterday.

The reality is there have been a litany of other illegal practices the CIA has engaged in and some of them were authorized by Vice President Dick Cheney with bogus legal opinions penned by John Yoo.

"You're talking about threatening to kill a guy, threatening to attack his family, threatening to use an electric drill on him — but never doing it," King said. "You have that on the one hand — and on the other you have the [interrogator's] attempt to prevent thousands of Americans from being killed."

This is typical fascist talk that would appeal to the most hardened Nazi: the end justifies the means.

Debate on CIA investigation

CNN's Lisa Sylvester discusses with two guests a newly released CIA inspector general report on interrogation techniques.

This is the old argument that a government employee is off the the hook if they follow orders even if they know they are illegal. Most military men know this argument doesn't hold water.

Americans also know that the Bush administration authorized a lot of extra-legal activity that countermanded US law.

Al Jazeera: Israeli manufactured arms seized on ship in Philippines

Rightardia comment: The Israelis have been providing military training and arms to Georgia. It is possible the arms smuggling is a covert Israeli operation. CIA involvement is also possible.

Five crates containing 50 Israeli-made assault rifles were seized from the MV Captain Ufuk [AFP]

The captain and crew of a cargo ship seized near Manila with crates of illegal Israeli-made weapons on board are to face gun-smuggling charges, officials in the Philippines have said.

Customs and coast guard officers searched the Philippine-owned ship MV Captain Ufuk after suspicions were raised when it docked at a port near Bataan province without prior notice, officials said on Friday.

They found five crates containing 50 Israeli-made Galil assault rifles on board the vessel.

Ten empty crates were also found and intelligence reports indicated the contents were unloaded at sea onto a yacht.

Authorities are investigating whether the ship, which came into the port of Mariveles northwest of the capital, Manila, was transporting firearms to illegal syndicates, local warlords or rebel groups.

Long conflicts

"These guns are the primary weapon of the Israeli army," Armand Balilo, a coast guard spokesman, said. "This is dangerous if it falls into the wrong hands."

A map on the vessel showed it was headed towards a province south of the capital [EPA]
Leonilo de la Cruz, the regional police director, said the mostly Georgian crew did not speak English, and failed to provide any documentation to prove the cargo was legitimate.

"We're having a hard time talking to them," de la Cruz said, adding an interpreter would be helping investigations.

"They are either pretending they don't know how to speak English or they simply do not know how."
A map found on board showed the Panama-registered vessel had sailed from a port in Turkey bound for the Batangas province in the south, officials said.

The Philippines has been battling communists and Muslim separatists for decades in conflicts that have killed about 160,000 people.

Former US intelligence officer connects the Jakarta bombings to CIA

21 July, 2009, 13:33

Former naval intelligence officer, investigative journalist Wayne Madsen shared a theory that last week’s bombings in Jakarta may be connected with American and Israeli secret services.

Police in Indonesia say last week’s bombings in Jakarta, that left nine people dead and many others injured, are identical to those in Bali in 2005.

Suicide bombers blew themselves up in the Ritz-Carlton and Marriott hotels, and Asia’s most wanted terrorist is the suspected mastermind.

However, according to Madsen, there are other suspects too. However, the CIA motivation for such an attack remains unclear.

New Department of Interrogation?

The intelligence agency lost credibility with Congress over allegedly withholding from them a secret plan to assassinate al Qaeda members.

The team would recruit from the FBI, CIA, and Pentagon to find members who can "research, master, and conduct non-coercive interrogations of detainees," including techniques outside of the Army Field Manual, the current standard.

However, these procedures were not followed during many of the integrations in Iraq and Afghanistan. Instead Search and Rescue Escape and Evasion training  techniques used to train US combatants were used.  These were derived from a communist interrogation manual that was captured during the Korean War.

CIA Supervisor Claimed He Used Fire Ants On Detainee

A recently released legal memo describing interrogation techniques showed that Bush Administration lawyers had approved the use of "insects" in interrogations. "You would like to place [Abu] Zubaydeh in a cramped confinement box with an insect," Jay Bybee, then a Justice Department lawyer and now a federal judge, wrote in 2002. He opined that as long as the bug wasn't actually harmful, it would not violate the law to use one to scare a terrorist detainee.

According to Wikipedia,  inject a toxic alkaloid venom called Solenopsin, a compound from the class of piperidines. For humans, this is a painful sting, it hurts, a sensation similar to what one feels when burned by fire—hence the name fire ant—and the after effects of the sting can be deadly to sensitive individuals.

I would imagine that vice president Dick Cheney enjoyed reading about the detainees that were tortured with fire ants.  Jeb Bush probably sent some Florida fire ants to Iraq to help the CIA operatives inflict as much pain as possible.

CIA linked to Benazir Bhutto’s assassination?

    14 July, 2009, 13:03

Washington is caught up in a political scandal centering on former Vice President Dick Cheney. It follows a move by the new CIA director Leon Panetta to cancel a secret plan to find and kill Al-Qaeda leaders.

He says that, while in office, Cheney ordered the agency to withhold information about the anti-terror program from Congress.

According to investigative journalist and RT contributor Wayne Madsen, “This assassination team may have targeted politicians in other countries.

One name mentioned was former Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, who may have been a victim of this program. The other name is Jonas Savimbi, the former Angolan UNITA leader, who may have outlived his usefulness as far as Mr Cheney is concerned.”
