Lefty Cartoons: How democracy works

Americans have been fooled by privatization schemes for years. In most cases, its cost the consumer more in the long term when a government function is privatized.

This is because private enterprise often has the twice the overhead government has. CEOs are often paid 400 times what the average worker is paid, and stock dividends have to be paid out.

The government has to fund a public service commission's to oversee the privatized government function.

The man in the moon

"If Bush had actually done his job and killed Osama bin Laden, the Right would have cleared room for him on Mt. Rushmore. If Bush had killed bin Laden and helped take down Gaddahfi? Over a single summer? . . . (T)he Right would this minute be carving his face on the Moon. "

-- Driftglass, September, 2011

Now, we now why Newt Gingrich wanted that moon base. Newt wanted his face on the moon.

Mittens can't shake dog abuse story

Mittens  was bringing the pizzas to a meeting with New York firefighters and former mayor Rudy Giuliani.

Someone shouted:

Just don't put 'em on the roof of the car.

President Makes an Argument for Rebuilding America

Speaking to 3,000 attendees of the Building and Construction Trades Department conference in Washington, DC this morning, President Obama made an argument for investing in rebuilding America.

He told the crowd:

[As] a share of the economy, Europe invests more than twice what we do in infrastructure; China about four times as much. Are we going to sit back and let other countries build the newest airports and the fastest railroads and the most modern schools, at a time when we’ve got private construction companies all over the world -- or all over the country -- and millions of workers who are ready and willing to do that work right here in the United States of America?

The President used the conference as an opportunity to call on Congress to get construction workers back on the job:

As we speak, the House Republicans are refusing to pass a bipartisan bill that could guarantee work for millions of construction workers. Already passed the Senate. Ready to go, ready to put folks back to work. Used to be the most -- the easiest bill to pass in Washington used to be getting roads and bridges built, because it’s not like only Democrats are allowed to use these things. Everybody is permitted. Everybody needs them.

So this makes no sense. Congress needs to do the right thing. Pass this bill right away. It shouldn’t be that hard. It shouldn’t be that hard. Not everything should be subject to thinking about the next election instead of thinking about the next generation.

Roghtardia agrees. America needs to be rebuilt. We should abandon dysfunctional supply side taxation and spend our blood and treasure on this country, not foreign misadventures.

Worry not, my furry friend . . .

One candidate for president is not on a national animal abuse registry. He's a Democrat.

No surprises here.

Another look at Derek and Maria's classy vampire dance

Certainly, this will be a viewer's choice dance in the annals of the show.

Even Barnabus of Dark Shadows would be impressed.

FLS: Satan was a Lexus SUV

The Biblical version of Satan/Lucifer is not really some scarlet-clad dude with a pointed stick tormenting lost souls in the fiery pits. He was actually the most beautiful of God's cherubs: the perfect being.

This "perfection" meant he had (depending on which part of the Bible you're reading) four/six 8-foot wings, each with extra hands beneath them to "carry things". He had four faces/heads, either man-cherub-eagle-lion or man-ox-lion-eagle.

His body was entirely covered with eyes, even the wings, and he adorned himself with precious stones.

He was 18 feet tall.

He also had "whirring wheels". Satan was clearly an SUV.

WIN: The People's History of International Workers' Day

Many countries around the world will be taking part in the International Workers’ Holiday today.

This is a day that commemorates Chicago’s Haymarket Massacre by acknowledging the importance of workers in society.

However, the United States hasn't joined those countries in solidarity in decades.

Historian Anthony Arnove explains why the US celebrates Labor Day in September and not on May 1.

For many years we, in the United States, also celebrated Labor Day on May Day. And that was actually very consciously changed and Labor Day was established as a federal holiday and turned into a kind of picnic, a patriotic version that had the teeth taken out of it, had the history taken out of it, had the meaning, really, drained out of it in order to turn Labor Day into a day that celebrated work in the most meaningless sense. It didn’t celebrate the struggles of workers, which have been very long and rich in this country for basic rights: rights for an eight hour day, rights to eliminate child slavery, and rights to even form a union.

Republicans love symbolic issues like this and use them effectively.

Of course, It would be s simple matter for Democrats to change Labor Day to May 1 like the rest of the world, but do they have the cojones to fix a historical wrong.

The unforgettable Vampire Dance on DWTS classic night

Violinist Joshua Bell, soprano little Jackie Evancho and renowned Italian tenor Vittorio Grigolo performed during Dancing with the Stars (DWTS) classic night.

The Derek Hough-Maria Menounos paso doble was outstanding and certainly the best dance of the season, perhaps in the history of the show.

Derek and Maria will be vying with Mark Ballas and Katherine Jenkins for the top spot.

Last season Derek swept the preliminary weeks, but faded near the end. This was a mistake he does not appear to be repeating this season, It was Mark Ballas, who faded tonight, whose choreography and lovely partner, Katherine Jenkins, have kept that team ultra-competitive so far this season.

The Derek-Maria vampire dance scored a perfect 30.

Bravo!
