What assault rifle would have Jesus preferred?

Have you ever wondered where Jesus would stand on the Second Amendment? Well, according to National Review, there is little doubt that he would be a pro-gun lobbyist.

How would the Romans have been able to crucify Jesus if he had ab AR-15 or an AK-47.

The Canon Gary Hall of the National Cathedral  made brief remarks before a prayer yesterday and said:

Everyone in this city seems to live in terror of the gun lobby . . . but I believe that the gun lobby is no match for the cross lobby.

Perhaps a more important metaphysical question is what assault rifle would have Jesus preferred  the AR-15 that the Bushmaster is derived from or the famous AK-47?

Jesus drives the investment bankers from Wall Street.

This is more accurate view of Jesus than men like Joel Osteen have, who push Christian prosperity.

The Atheist Pig: God sacriced his only son for the human race

"For this is how God loved the world: He gave his unique Son so that everyone who believes in him might not be lost but have eternal life." John 3:16

The implications in the Bible is that Jesus died for all of our sins and if he has not died the world would have ended because God was displeased with the human race.

This is explained in the next paragraph:

It (his death) was for all the world. He tasted "death for every man," Hebrews 2:9. He "died for all," 2 Corinthians 5:15. "He is the propitiation for the sins of the whole world," 1 John 2:2.

This is a peculiar logic, Why would God have to sacrifice his only begotten son to "save the world" if God  held the world's destiny in his hands?

As the Atheist Pig points out, Jesus was resurrected and the Holy Ghost lived on.

The American lottery effect

Many Americans accept class warfare when it directed against the poor and minorities, but buy into the class warfare arguments of Karl Rove when the tax perks and excesses of the affluent are examined.

Part of the problem is what Rightardia calls the lottery effect. Many Americans think they can be millionaires and as they grow older and their chances diminish, they play the lottery to achieve the American dream.

According to Wikipedia, the percentage of Americans who are millionaires is 0.15571 %.

This means the odds of becoming a millionaire area less than 1:50. When you factor in education, the odds are even greater. According  to Forrester Research, only 20% of America's millionaires never attended college.

This means approximately 1 in 250 people who never went to college might become a millionaire. That is pretty slim odds.

Yet the improbable dream persists. The majority of Americans, roughly two of three, would like to be rich.

Of course, how do you define rich  Many would define it by their circle of friends and family. Jesus would probably define it by the one's readiness for the Kingdom of God.

Jesus said:

how hard is it for them that trust in riches to enter into the kingdom of God! It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.

Oddly, many fundamentalist Christians seems to ignore Jesus' words on affluence and talk about Christian prosperity.

Newsy: Kosher Jesus

February 8, 2012 (2:24)

"Rabbi Schmuley Boteach is best known as Michael Jackson’s unofficial rabbi and the author of relationship books like “Kosher Sex.”

But now the rabbi is back in the news for his scholarship; he just wrote a book about Jesus, called “Kosher Jesus,” that portrays the historical Jesus as an observant Jewish rabbi without messianic ambitions."

Rightardia agrees with the thesis of Rabbi Botech's book. Jesus never claimed to be divine. All of that that mystical nonsense started with the four evangelicals: Mathew, Mark, Luke and John who wrote their books at least 40 to 70 years after Jesus died.

Two Path notes:

Bible scholars believe the letters of Paul are the oldest books in the New Testament, written between 50 and 60 A.D. Mark was written around 70 A.D., about 40 years after Jesus was crucified. Matthew and Luke were written between 80 and 90 A.D. Finally, The Gospel of John appeared in its final form around 95 A.D. Bible Scholars believe Matthew and Luke incorporated much of the material from Mark into their gospels.

Bible hour: Why early Christians created the Holy Ghost

One of the jokes that is circulating in Democratic circles.

Rick Perry visited a rectory and had dinner with a group of priests. He even looked up the Catholic grace and the Internet before he went to dinner.

Monsignor O'Mara asked Rick Perry to perform grace. Perry said:

Bless us, O Lord! and these Thy gifts, which we are about to receive from Thy bounty of the father, the son and . . . oh, what was the third one?

The Holy ghost is forgettable and misunderstood by a lot of Christians.

And for good reason.

Most of the disciples believed that Jesus was divine and that it would be impossible for the Romans to crucify him.

The account of the crucifixion suggests Jesus died a low and painful death. His death shocked the disciples. How could this be?

Enter the Holy Ghost.

The disciples explained the dispatch of Jesus with the Holy ghost. Although the Romans, killed the body of Christ, the disciples explained the ghost walked free.

This is why many worship this relic of Christendom, the Holy Ghost today.

If you have a Holy Ghost, whey then did Christ need to be resurrected? Perhaps the Disciples were tyring to say that the Romans really didn't kill Jesus.

Of interest, Jesus said you will not recognize me after I am resurrected and will not be able to touch me:

But their eyes were kept from recognizing him.  (Luke 24:16).

According to Mark 16:12 Jesus appeared "in another form that was, different from his "usual" appearance.

Again, the disciples were probably overjoyed that Jesus has returned and wasn't really dead. This suggests that the Holly Ghost appeared before the disciples before it was lifted into the heavens as were the other great Biblical prophets.

Amen!

Abel Malcolm Guest editorial: Jesus was the first liberal

Conservatives are now claiming that the Bible has a "Liberal bias". This proves one thing, that they never read it before. They  are only now starting to realize the obvious, that Jesus was a  liberal, so they're eating their hearts out.

Nobody talked more about this than Jesus did,  about how important it is to help the poor, about redistributing wealth, and all that. No question about it, Jesus was a Liberal. And a radical Liberal at that.

Conservatives espouse self-sufficiency and rugged individualism, and they believe that people should pull themselves up by their own bootstraps. Becoming rich is a highly valued goal, and taxes are seen  as a curse.

Social programs for the poor are a waste of tax-payers'  money, and the sort of people on those programs (mostly blacks) are  lazy and given to crime.

As for criminals, they should feel the full force of the law. And that goes for international criminals as well... a nation should deal with its enemies from a position of strength, and should never be afraid to let them feel the full force of its military might.

OK, but these were NOT the politics of Jesus.

Let's take a look:

On defense: Jesus said "Love your enemies" and "Blessed are the peacemakers." (Matthew 5:44; 5:9; 5:39.)

On social programs: "If you would be perfect, go, sell what you possess and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven." (Matthew 19:21.)

On rugged individualism and the pursuit of self-interest: "Love your neighbor as yourself." "So in everything, do to others as you would have them do to you." (Matthew 22:39; 7:12.)

On financial success: "Truly, I say unto you, it will be hard for a
rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven." "You cannot serve both God and Money." (Matthew 19:23; 6:24.)

On the philosophy that 'greed is good': "Watch out! Be on your guard
against all kinds of greed; a man's life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions." (Luke 12:15.)

On paying taxes: "Give to Caesar what is Caesar's, and to God what is
God's." (Matthew 22:22.)

On race relations: In the parable of the Good Samaritan, Jesus praised
the morality of a hated foreigner over his own countrymen. (Luke 10:30-37.)

On letting others pull themselves up by their own bootstraps: "But when you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, and you will be blessed. Although they cannot repay you, you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous." (Luke 14:13,14.)

Christian conservatives would be horrified, but there is no getting around this central fact: Jesus was not just a liberal, but a radical liberal!
In fact, there is not one text in all four Gospels which even remotely supports or resembles the conservatives most cherished beliefs.

It is a standing challenge to the religious right to find a list of Gospel texts, as I have provided here, which advocates conservative philosophies. Not one Christian can give a single example, because these texts do not exist.

And if anyone remains unconvinced about the deep liberal slant of Jesus, a review of his economic policies should remove all doubt forever. Reading from Essenes, who wrote the Dead Sea Scrolls, and of Paul's Christian Church, it's made clear, that the fruits of everyone's labor went into a collective pool, which was then divided evenly among everyone in the group.

The following passages from Actsof the Apostles are remarkable in this description:

All the believers were together and had everything in common. Selling their possessions and goods, they gave to anyone as he had need." (Acts 2:44-45).

All the believers were one in heart and mind. No one claimed that any of his possessions was his own, but they shared everything they had… There were no needy persons among them. For from time to time those who owned lands or houses sold them, brought the money from the sales and put it at the apostles' feet, and it was distributed to anyone as he had need." (Acts 4:32,34,35)

The New Testament itself is filled with countless calls for a redistribution of wealth from the rich to the poor. As for the rich, they are clearly portrayed as wicked; both Jesus and his apostles condemned them in the harshest terms possible:

But woe to you who are rich, for you have already received your comfort. Woe to you who are well fed now, for you will go hungry." (Luke 6:24,25)

Indeed, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God." (Luke 18:25)

People who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge men into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is the root of all evil." (1 Timothy 6:9,10)

Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share." (1 Timothy 6:17,18)

Listen, my dear brothers: Has not God chosen those who are poor in the eyes of the world to be rich in faith and to inherit the kingdom he promised those who loved him? But you have insulted the poor. Is it not the rich who are exploiting you? Are they not the ones
who are dragging you into court? Are they not the ones who are slandering the noble name of him to whom you belong?" (James 2:5-7)

Now listen, you rich people, weep and wail because of the misery that is coming upon you. Your wealth has rotted, and moths have eaten your clothes. Your gold and silver are corroded. Their corrosion will testify against you and eat your flesh like fire. You have
hoarded wealth in the last days. Look! The wages you failed to pay the workmen who mowed your fields are crying out against you. The cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord Almighty. You have lived on earth in luxury and self-indulgence. You have fattened  yourself in the day of slaughter. You have condemned and murdered innocent men, who were not opposing you." (James 5:1-6)

Giving to the poor was not just an act of kindness, it was a Christian duty. It was this identification with the poor that led to a condemnation of usury, or the loaning of money for interest, for this was seen as exploitation of the poor.

Conservatives cannot claim Jesus as one of their own. Jesus would, in fact, if he could today, condemn Conservatives in the strongest possible terms. Their political views are based on their own logic and reason, but they must stop there, and cease to claim that their views come from the teachings of Jesus, because they do not.

What would Jesus think about cutting taxes for the rich?

In the Gospel of Matthew, a rich young man asks Jesus what actions bring eternal life. First Jesus advises the man to obey the commandments. When the man responds that he already observes them, Jesus adds:
If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.".
The Gospel of Luke has a similar episode:
When he heard this, he became very sad, because he was a man of great wealth. Jesus looked at him and said, "How hard it is for the rich to enter the kingdom of God! Indeed, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God."
Jesus said this to the Pharisees about taxes:

Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's. And they marvelled at him.

Rightardia thinks that Jesus would want the Bush tax cuts to expire. Jesus was never a big fan of the 'have mores.'

CNN: Was Jesus crucified?

July 1st, 2010 01:49 PM ET

Update July 2 8:04 a.m. Gunnar Samuelsson stresses that his research focuses specifically on the narratives of Jesus's execution in the four Gospels, not on the entire New Testament.

Few claims have been more surprising than one advanced by an obscure Swedish scholar this spring. The Gospels do not say Jesus was crucified, Gunnar Samuelsson says.

In fact, he argues, in the original Greek, the ancient texts reveal only that Jesus carried "some kind of torture or execution device" to a hill where "he was suspended" and died, says Samuelsson. Samuelsson is an evangelical pastor as well as a New Testament scholar.

"When we say crucifixion, we think about Mel Gibson's 'Passion.' We think about a church, nails, the crown of thorns," he says, referring to Gibson's 2004 film, "The Passion of the Christ."

"We are loaded with pictures of this well-defined punishment called crucifixion - and that is the problem," he says.

Samuelsson bases his claim on studying 900 years' worth of ancient texts in the original languages - Hebrew, Latin and Greek, which is the language of the New Testament.

He spent three years reading for 12 hours a day, he says, and he noticed that the critical word normally translated as "crucify" doesn't necessarily mean that.

"He was handed over to be 'stauroun,'" Samuelsson says of Jesus, lapsing into Biblical Greek to make his point.

At the time the apostles Matthew, Mark, Luke and John were writing their Gospels, that word simply meant "suspended," the theologian argues.

Mary and Joseph billboard spark outrage in New Zealand

by LT Saloon on Wed, Dec 23, 2009

A billboard showing Mary and Jospeh under the bedsheets has outraged some New Zealanders. Photograph: www.stmatthews.org.nz

Toni O’Loughlin, The Guardian.co.uk, Thursday 17 December 2009 10.44 GMT -

A New Zealand church has sparked outrage by erecting a billboard depicting Mary and Joseph lying semi-nude beneath the sheets.

In an unorthodox take on the Christmas tale, the billboard depicts a forlorn Joseph and Mary looking to the sky with a caption which reads: “Poor Joseph. God is a hard act to follow.”

The St Matthew-in-the-City church said it wanted to inspire people to talk about the Christmas story.

But within five hours of the billboard going up in downtown Auckland a man was standing on his car roof painting over the raunchy image.

Archdeacon Glynn Cardy said the church meant to challenge a fundamentalist interpretation of Christ’s birth.

“What we’re trying to do is to get people to think more about what Christmas is all about. Is it about a spiritual male God sending down sperm so a child would be born, or is it about the power of love in our midst as seen in Jesus?”

Cardy said one person had threatened to tear down the billboard but that of the 20 odd emails and phone calls he had received “about 50% said they loved it, and about 50% said it was terribly offensive."

The Catholic church joined those on the attack, accusing the Anglican church of disrespect.

“It’s flying in the face of our 2,000-year-old beliefs,” a Catholic church spokesman, Lyndsay Freer, said.

The conservative Family First organization said the Anglican church could debate the Bible story away from the public eye. “To confront children and families with the concept as a street billboard is completely irresponsible and unnecessary,” Family First’s national director, Bob McCoskrie, said.

A complaint has been lodged with New Zealand’s advertising watchdog, the Advertising Authority, but Cardy was unrepentant.

“I don’t see why one person’s protest should deny other people the enjoyment of the billboard.”

Does anyone really believe that a divine being came to Earth to impregnate Mary?  Only the Christian religion subscribes to such an outlandish belief.

Both the Greeks and Romans believed that the progeny of a god and a mortal called a demigod would be God like, but always have a fatal weakness. The disciples were shocked when the Romans easily dispatched their Messiah.

They expected Jesus to rise from the dead and return to them immediately. Jesus supposedly rose from the dead, but no one recognised him. Why did no one recognize Jesus?  Because someone else was pretending to be Jesus.

The Jesus impersonator then quickly rose into heaven to fulfil the prophesy given  of the disciples. Exit, stage right.

To explain this slight of hand, Christians created the Trinity, one of the most absurd religious concepts ever.

First there is God, then there is Jesus. But wait, there's more: The Holy ghost. The Trinity is the the Three Musketeers of religion: three Gods in one. If Joseph did not impregnate Mary, then whom? Is there anything at all to be said of this matter? Has any alternative tradition regarding Jesus’ father come down to us?

The answer is yes, the name Pantera is found in a number of ancient sources. Rather than dismiss these out of hand as a “shop-worn tale” produced by Jewish opponents of the Christians who wanted to cast aspersions on Jesus’ paternity, let's examine what one might responsibly conclude about the subject.

Having examined the “Jesus son of Panthera” textual traditions in their various forms, the tombstone of the 1st century Roman soldier, one “Tiberius Julius Abdes Pantera” from Sidon who was buried outside of present day Bingerbrück, Germany is still standing.

Ancient texts appear to use the designation “Yeshu ben Pantera” in a descriptive rather than a slanderous or polemical way they offer us evidence that Jesus was remembered as “son of Panthera” in the region of Galilee, and even on the streets of Sepphoris, in the early 2nd century.

Steve Kangas FAQ: Did The Founders intended the U.S. to be a Christian republic?

Editor's Note:  In the last article Rightardia wrote on the separation of church and state, it was pointed that God, Christianity and Jesus are not mentioned in the Constitution or the Articles of Confederation. President John Adams also signed the Treaty of Tripoli that was ratified by the US Senate. It stated the US was not a Christian nation. There is also a legal doctrine on the separation of church and state that is based on more than 50 federal and Supreme Court cases. This article reflects the views of Steve Kangas on the Founders intents on religion.

Myth: The Founders intended the U.S. to be a Christian republic.

Fact: If the Founders had wanted a Christian republic, they would have made one.

Summary

If the Founders had intended this to be a Christian Republic, they would not have separated Church and State in the constitution. Besides, many of the founders were Deists or atheists, not Christians; it would have been impossible for them to intend a Christian Republic.

Argument

The First Amendment states:
"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof…"
Article VI, Section 3 of the constitution also states:
"The Senators and Representatives before mentioned, and the members of the several State Legislatures, and all executive and judicial officers, both of the several State Legislatures, and all executive and judicial officers, both of the United States, and of the several States, shall be bound by oath or affirmation to support this Constitution; but no religious test shall ever be required as a qualification to any office or public trust under the United States."
By now virtually everyone knows the argument that making the United States a Christian republic would violate the First Amendment rights of Hindus, Buddhists, Taoists, atheists, agnostics, etc. But fewer people realize that it would also violate the First Amendment rights of Christians as well. Which of the 2,500 Christian denominations would we choose as the Christian orthodoxy upon which to base the republic? Seventh-day Adventists and Catholics are complete opposites to each other, and, in fact, are sworn enemies. Thus, a Christian Republic would certainly involve a small minority forcing its views on the majority.

Be that as it may, did the Founders actually intend for Christianity to play a greater role in our society than it has? Prior to the constitution, 11 of 13 states had religious qualifications for public office. These were limited to Christians only, and sometimes even Protestants only. However, the Constitutional Convention voted down such qualifications, creating the separation of church and state that we find in the First Amendment today. If this is not proof of the Founders intentions, then what is?

One should remember that the Founders lived in the 18th century, just as the horrors of the Inquisition were winding down. Anyone who overly opposed the Roman Catholic Church was arrested by the Inquisition as a heretic. They were tortured until they confessed their guilt, then handed over to the state for execution. The state, in full partnership with the church, would then prove its loyalty by carrying out the execution. Those Founders who were Christians were Protestants, and had they lived in Europe they would have been persecuted by the Inquisition. It was this identification with "heretics" that compelled them to build "a wall of separation between Church and State."

This famous phrase was coined by Thomas Jefferson in his letter to the Danbury Baptists:
"Believing that religion is a matter which lies solely between man and his God, that he owes account to none other for his faith or his worship, that the legislative powers of government reach actions only, and not opinions, I contemplate with sovereign reverence that act of the whole American people which declared that their Legislature should 'make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof,' thus building a wall of separation between Church and State." -- Thomas Jefferson to Danbury Baptists, 1802.
Some Christians have tried to argue that this wall is "one-way," that the state may not interfere with religion, but religion may interfere with the state. However, this is an impossibility, since by definition any control that a denomination achieves over the state will automatically become state infringement on the religious rights of others.

Besides, many of the Founders were hardly Christians. There were several Deists, most prominent among them Thomas Jefferson. Deism rejected formal or organized religion, including Christianity; it taught that people should depend on human reasoning, not revealed truths, to discern what is true in the world. Deism rejected the divinity of Jesus and ascribed his miracles and resurrection to "mysticisms, fancies and falsehoods" (Jefferson's words).

Another standout is Benjamin Franklin. The body of his work strongly suggests that he was an atheist. Like most atheist politicians since, Franklin was not so impolitic as to broadcast this fact. He sometimes evoked Providence or God in his speeches, ever mindful of his Christian audiences. But anyone familiar with Franklin's writings knows of his true philosophy towards religion.

Thus, the fact that not all the Founders were Christians, and that they actually removed a widespread Christian qualification for office in the U.S. constitution, proves that the Founders did not intend this to be a Christian republic.

James von Brunn was a neo-Nazi pedophile

Editors note: Is there any doubt this man was a rightard? Rush Limbaugh has claimed von Brunn was a leftist. That is clearly incorrect.
