The Family and the "new realities" of conservatives

Ron Suskind in an October 17, 2004, The New York Times Magazine article by writer , quoted  an unnamed aide to George W. Bush. The quote was later attributed to Karl Rove.

The aide said that Suskind lives "in what we call the reality-based community," which he defined as people who "believe that solutions emerge from your judicious study of discernible reality." ...

"That's not the way the world really works anymore. We're an empire now, and when we act, we create our own reality. And while you're studying that reality—judiciously, as you will—we'll act again, creating other new realities, which you can study too, and that's how things will sort out. We're history's actors…and you, all of you, will be left to just study what we do."

This is essentially the philosophy of The Family and Douglas Coe.  The Family or The Fellowship, a secretive militant fundamentalist Christian association led by Coe.

Coe admires power and compares Jesus to “Lenin, Ho Chi Minh, Bin Laden” as examples of leaders who change the world through the strength of the covenants they had forged with their “brothers.”

He preached that  special people are not bound by social conventions. He admired the grandiose plans of some notorious leaders and their ability to wield power.

Coe compared Jesus's teachings to the Red Guard during the Chinese Cultural Revolution:

I’ve seen pictures of young men in the Red Guard of China... they would bring in this young man’s mother and father, lay her on the table with a basket on the end, he would take an axe and cut her head off.... They have to put the purposes of the Red Guard ahead of the mother-father-brother-sister – their own life! That was a covenant. A pledge. That was what Jesus said.

Jeff Sharlet wrote a book about the family based on living in the family's C-street dorm in Washington DC. He considers the family a Christian activist organization and not a conspiracy. Many conservative US representatives and Senators have lived in this dorm

The Family can trace its origins to Abraham Vereide, a Norwegian clergyman, who had fascist leanings and catered to the Republican "outs" during the New Deal. Vereide was the founder of what eventually became the National Prayer breakfast.

The avalanche on BS mountain

"And that’s when Stewart got around to the amazing, insane moment of panic on the network that Stewart said, unlike all of humanity, “will… live forever.”

Stewart was amazed that Rove’s insistent denials that Ohio was really a lock for Obama got Megyn Kelly to suggest that Rove was either lying to himself or to the audience in doing his own math."

The American lottery effect

Many Americans accept class warfare when it directed against the poor and minorities, but buy into the class warfare arguments of Karl Rove when the tax perks and excesses of the affluent are examined.

Part of the problem is what Rightardia calls the lottery effect. Many Americans think they can be millionaires and as they grow older and their chances diminish, they play the lottery to achieve the American dream.

According to Wikipedia, the percentage of Americans who are millionaires is 0.15571 %.

This means the odds of becoming a millionaire area less than 1:50. When you factor in education, the odds are even greater. According  to Forrester Research, only 20% of America's millionaires never attended college.

This means approximately 1 in 250 people who never went to college might become a millionaire. That is pretty slim odds.

Yet the improbable dream persists. The majority of Americans, roughly two of three, would like to be rich.

Of course, how do you define rich  Many would define it by their circle of friends and family. Jesus would probably define it by the one's readiness for the Kingdom of God.

Jesus said:

how hard is it for them that trust in riches to enter into the kingdom of God! It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.

Oddly, many fundamentalist Christians seems to ignore Jesus' words on affluence and talk about Christian prosperity.

How class warfare really works in the US

Karl Rove: Egyptians are more western because they are descended from Ramses and Cleopatra

The Egyptians have a distinct culture and they are not Arabs or Berbers.  The country does have ancient Greek influence from Alexander the Great and the Ptolemies.

The Romans also conquered Egypt and Napoleon also occupied part of the country.

What in the world is Karl Rove talking about?

Republicans seem to be often humorously and historically misinformed.

Politico: Judge rejects RNC bid to end minority voter protections

This is a good example of voter suppression. Americans vote on Nov. 4, not November 6. Republicans have even called voters on the phone and provided false election dates.

By KENNETH P. VOGEL | 12/1/09 8:07 PM EST

A federal judge in New Jersey on Tuesday rejected an attempt by the Republican National Committee to end nearly three-decade-old restrictions on GOP "ballot security" programs that historically discriminated against minority voters.

In a ruling that extended the restrictions for at least another eight years, but also slightly narrowed the consent decree containing them, U.S. District Court Judge Dickinson Debevoise of Newark asserted that “voter intimidation presents an ongoing threat to the participation of minority individuals in the political process.”

The consent decree stems from a lawsuit brought in the early 1980s in New Jersey by the Democratic National Committee, which accused the Republican National Committee of suppressing minority voters under the guise of guarding against voter fraud, partly by challenging their registrations if mail sent to their residences was returned as undeliverable, and by stationing off-duty police around polling places in minority neighborhoods.

The resulting consent decree, which barred the RNC from launching any ballot security programs without prior court approval, was expanded in 1987 to cover the entire country.

But the RNC, in a motion filed with little fanfare the day before Barack Obama’s historic presidential election victory, argued that since the 1980s, the risk of fraud has increased, while the need for minority voter protection measures has decreased.

The DNC countered that the RNC was exaggerating the danger of voter fraud and said the potential for such fraud is outweighed by the risk of voter intimidation efforts by Republican groups, pointing to a recent decision by the New Jersey court that the RNC had engaged in illegal voter challenges as recently as the 2004 presidential election.

The RNC contended that the consent decree had been interpreted too broadly and made it tougher for Republicans to ensure an even electoral playing field.

Plus, it said it had no incentive to intimidate minority voters, pointing to its own election of Michael Steele, who is African-American, as chairman, and asserting that Obama’s election meant existing voting rights laws would be adequate to protect minority voters without the decree.

DNC Chairman Tim Kaine, in a statement, shot back that “Republicans would be better served trying to engage minority and under-represented voters rather than trying to intimidate them.”

Rightardia applauds the judge for making the right decision. The GOP has been supressing voters since the great Depression when black Americans started voting Democratic. Prior to presidential primary in Florida, thousands of black voters were purged form the voter rolls.  This purge gave the election to George W. Bush. Jeb Bush was the governor of Florida and Katherine Harris was the Secretary of the State when this occurred.

In May 2000, DBT discovered that approximately 8,000 names were erroneously placed on the exclusion list, mostly those of former Texas prisoners who were included on a DBT list that turned out never to have been convicted of more than a misdemeanor.

Later in the month, DBT provided a revised list to the Division of Elections (DOE) containing a total of 173,127 persons. Of those included on the "corrected list", 57,746 were identified as felons.

According to the Palm Beach Post, among other problems with the list, although blacks accounted for 88% of those removed from the rolls, they made up only about 11% of Florida's voters.

Voter demographics authority David Bositis, a senior research associate at the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies in Washington, DC, reviewed The Nation's findings and concluded that the purge-and-block program was "a patently obvious technique to discriminate against black voters".

He noted that based on nationwide conviction rates, African-Americans would account for 46% of the ex-felon group wrongly disfranchised.

RT: Mystery surrounds death of Bush adviser

Published 24 December, 2008, 02:24

The US media is buzzing with speculation about the death of presidential adviser Mike Connell, who died on December 19 after his private plane crashed as it prepared to land.

Connell worked as an IT adviser to the Republican Party and played a major role in both of George W. Bush’s presidential campaigns.

The 45-year-old also advised John McCain in this year’s election. In 2006 he was linked to missing White House emails connected with a string of firings of US attorneys.

So the question everybody is asking is whether there could be more to this story than just a plane crash. According to the Free Press, there was something mysterious about the 2000 and 2004 elections.

“..On the night of the 2004 election exit polls and initial vote counts showed John Kerry the clear winner of Ohio's presidential campaign. The Buckeye State's 20 electoral votes would have given Kerry the presidency.

But from then until around 2am, the flow of information mysteriously ceased. After that, the vote count shifted dramatically to George W. Bush, ultimately giving him a second term. In the end there was a 6.7 percent diversion – in Bush's favour – between highly professional, nationally funded exit polls and the final official vote count as tabulated by Blackwell and Connell,” The Free Press writes.

Since Mike Connell was IT expert in both of Bush’s presidential campaigns, there is speculation that he could have been involved in what some believe was election rigging.

A non-profit group Velvet Revolution, or “VR”, has been investigating Connell’s activities for the past two years. According to the group, “a tipster close to the McCain campaign disclosed to VR in July that Mr Connell’s life was in jeopardy and that Karl Rove [Deputy Chief of Staff to President George W. Bush until August 2007] had threatened him and his wife, Heather”.

VR notified the US officials about the threats and insisted that Connell be placed in protective custody. VR also told a close associate of Connell’s “not to fly his plane because of another tip that the plane could be sabotaged”.

In the past two months the IT guru, also an experienced pilot, had to cancel two of his flights because there was something wrong with the plane.

On December 19 the father of four was flying himself home from an airport in Maryland when his Piper Saratoga plane crashed near his northern Ohio home.
Now there is a concern that there may be a reason behind his death, which came at a time when election protection attorneys and others appeared to be closing in on critical irregularities and illegalities.

One of the theories is that Mike Connell posed a risk. He might one day have revealed crucial information about election fixing and the deletion of incriminating emails.

Furthermore, he was an insider who at some point in the future might have provided some embarrassing details about Bush’s administration.

Bill Maher New Rule: No Shame in Being the Sorry Party

Friday, August 21, 2009

New Rule: If Mitt Romney, Karl Rove and Sarah Palin all think America has never done anything wrong, we must be doing something wrong. Look at them: an empty suit, an empty heart and an empty head. It looks like the news team on Good Morning Hell. And what they've been competing about lately is who would not apologize the most.

America is infallible, and apologies are horrible things that must never, ever be given. Except by me when I make a joke about the Pope. "We're perfect -- deal with it," is their new handshake. But I say, what's wrong with America occasionally saying, "I'm sorry"? Because these are the three sorriest white people I've ever seen.

If in your eyes America can do no wrong, you should really look into Lasik surgery. There's the rational, mature assessment of our country: that it's a great nation -- especially if you like fried foods -- but it also has its faults. And then there's the Republican view: that it's perfect and pure in every way and it's always right all the time, just like Leviticus and Ronald Reagan.

If the founders were alive today, Republicans would be giving them shit because the Declaration of Independence says, "In order to form a more perfect union? Hello, it's already perfect! Why are you suggesting American apologetics, Ben Franklin?"

One of the things that makes Republicans furious about our current president is their idea that Obama is always apologizing for America's biggest mistakes. Unlike President Bush. Who was one of America's biggest mistakes.

In his first week as president, Obama did an interview with Arab TV in which he said, "We sometimes make mistakes. We have not been perfect." Thought crime! And then he went to Cairo and violated one of those absolute eternal rules the Right Wing is always making up out of thin air: "The president must never apologize on foreign soil. Lest our allies begin to doubt that we're assholes. "

But what did Obama actually say to make Karl Rove's head explode and the popcorn fly out? Cover your children's ears: When he was asked if he believed in American exceptionalism, he said he did, the same way "the Brits believe in British exceptionalism and the Greeks in Greek exceptionalism."

Yes, our so-called president actually said people in other countries might like their countries better. I was so shocked I nearly dropped the Bible I was using to help me masturbate into my gun.

In her farewell speech -- if only -- Sarah Palin kept telling us "how she's wired." Now I'm not a doctor, or an electrician -- but this is faulty wiring, this worldview that, in her words, "we should never apologize for our country."

Really? Never? Not for slavery? Or Japanese internment camps, or if we tortured the wrong guy at Guantanamo? The Indians? Nothing, Sarah? "The Real Housewives of Atlanta"? Shouldn't John McCain apologize for... you?

When did intractability become a virtue? Mitt Romney's new book is called No Apology: The Case For American Greatness. You can find it at Borders, in the "Suck-Up" section. It's such a perfect title, combining paranoia with arrogance: "No one has yet asked me to apologize but, if someone ever does, fuck them."

Conservatives think apologizing is a sign of weakness. It's what liberal pussies do, when they're not busy driving electric cars and feeling empathy. When in fact it's the weak and the scared who are too insecure to apologize. Apologies are actually a sign of strength. That's why six-year-olds hate them.

In Rwanda, after a genocide that killed a million people, they set up special courts where people stood up and said, "Hey, sorry I macheted your entire family. My bad."

And believe it or not, in most cases, that was enough. That's the power of an apology. A recent study reveals that doctors who are willing to apologize to patients for their mistakes are sued for malpractice about half as much as doctors who aren't willing to apologize.

Apologies can do great things, and they can enable great things. And if you still don't believe me, I have three words for you: make-up sex.

Karl Rove deposed over US attorney firings

July 7, 2009

WASHINGTON — Former Bush White House politico Karl Rove was questioned by House Judiciary Committee lawyers Tuesday on any role he may have played in politically motivated firings of U.S. attorneys.

Committee Chairman John Conyers, D-Mich., confirmed Rove's closed-door appearance.

The committee has been seeking answers on who created the list of federal prosecutors who would lose their jobs. Conyers beleives the trail will lead to the White House. Former President George W. Bush asserted executive privilege for Rove and another White House lawyer, Harriet Miers.

An agreement was struck in March between Rove's lawyer and the committee for Rove, who was Bush's top political adviser, to testify on the prosecutors' firings, as well as the prosecution of former Democratic Gov. Don Siegelman of Alabama. Siegelman bleives that his prosecution was pushed by Republicans.

The agreement called for Rove to testify "under the penalty for perjury."

Nine U.S. attorneys were fired. An internal Bush Justice Department investigation concluded that political considerations played a part in at least four of the dismissals. Monica Goodling, a US government lawyer, used a secret conservative network to replace the fired attorneys with right wing attorneys.

American Class Warfare originated on the Right

Both Newsweek and the Guardian have articles on rich. The Newsweek article is titled 'Do the Media Hate the Rich?' and the Guardian article is 'America's Socialism for the Rich.' Both discuss class warfare.

The two political parties in the US have traditionally been engaged in forms of class warfare. The GOP has been the champion of the affluent and corporations since the party was formed in 1854. The Democratic party has been the champion of the middle class and the poor.

Much of the class warfare stated during the Reagan revolution. During Reagan's tenure, income tax rates of the top personal tax bracket dropped from 70% to 28% in 7 years, while Social Security and Medicare taxes increased. Generally the GOP tries to cut progressive taxes like Income Tax and increases regressive taxes like Social Security and Medicare. Social Security is one of the worst regressive taxes in the US because it is capped at $98,500.

George W. Bush tried to privatize Social Security, by running town hall meetings that were by 'invitation only' and tightly controlled by the Republican Party. If you had a “save the whales' bumper sticker on you auto, you wouldn't be admitted to the 'small tent' the president was speaking in.

Margaret Thatcher had privatized the UK version of Social Security when she was PM. It failed when the UK economy contracted and the government advised its citizens to return to the older and more stable public system.

Because of the financial meltdown in the US, both the Social Security and Medicare programs are less solvent. President Obama will have to look at funding of both programs once the national health insurance program is resolved in the House and Senate. Social Security has been born on the back of the middle class because of the tax cap since the program was created in 1935.

The Reagan Revolution produced a huge national debt and a recession that George H.W. Bush was never able to shake. Its biggest calamity was the fracturing of the middle class. Instead of building new roads, bridges and levees during the 1980s Reagan shifted the national treasure to the Armed Services as part of his agenda to 'defeat communism.' When the dust cleared one third of the middle class became affluent. The remaining two thirds of the middle class treaded water or declined.

As Paul Krugman wrote, “But while the rich got much richer, there was little sustained economic improvement for most Americans. By the late 1980s, middle-class incomes were barely higher than they had been a decade before — and the poverty rate had actually risen.”

The US spends about $500 billion a year on defense while Russia spends one tenth of that and China about one seventh. What do we have to show for this huge investment in the military-industrial complex?

We had a stalemate in Korea and we lost the Vietnam War. We did push Saddam Hussein out of Kuwait but the Kuwaitis didn't reward American businesses with the big lucrative contracts our government expected. The second Iraq War will not produce a military victory regardless of George W. Bush's claim of 'mission accomplished.' The Afghan War may not prove to be winnable. History indicates no one has ever conquered Afghanistan.

The term class warfare was used a lot by Karl Rove in the first presidential campaign of George W. Bush. As Ian Walsh has pointed out, there was a class war and the rich won it. All the middle class and poor did was whimper:

“As So they made themselves rich. They reduced taxation on themselves in a number of ways, they broke union power, they got rid of old New Deal laws that had stopped speculation from getting too bubblicious and they went on a bubble spree - shoving money into various different asset classes, driving them into the stratosphere, taking the profits and then letting the taxpayer eat the loss. They took as much public infrastructure private as they could and they did so for cents on the dollar. They imported manufactured goods from the east to keep goods inflation down and they exported jobs to low cost domiciles to keep wage push inflation down.”

President  Obama is now trying put the house back in order again. In the long run an economy cannot be successful that caters to corporations and the affluent. The middle class is the backbone of the economy but it has been suffering from osteoporosis lately.

Attacking CEOs, wealth and luxury is productive for "the mainstream media, the Obama administration and 97 percent of the American population," says Samir Husni, director of the Magazine Innovation Center at the University of Mississippi. "It takes guts in this day and age to come to the defense of the [top] 3 percent.

Bernie Madoff seems to be the poster child for class warfare attacks from the left. So are the large investment banks. While these Wall street banks were receiving huge bail-outs they were meeting with the founder of Home Depot on plans to defeat the Employee Free Choice Act (EFCA).

The Bank of America Corp. hosted a conference call with conservative activists and business officials to oppose the EFCA. At least one representative from another bailout recipient, AIG were asked to contact clients to send "large contributions" to groups working against the EFCA and to contact vulnerable Senate Republicans.

Bernie Marcus, co-founder of Home Depot, with Rick Berman, an aggressive EFCA opponent and called the legislation as a 'threat to American capitalism, or worse.' "This bill may be one of the worst things I have ever seen in my life," Marcus said. I could have been on "a 350-foot boat out in the Mediterranean," but felt it was more important to engage on this fight. "It is incredible to me that anybody could have the chutzpah to try and pass this bill in this election year, especially when we have an economy that is a disaster, a total absolute disaster."

Marcus added that donations of hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of dollars were needed, it was argued, to prevent America from turning "into France." America's banks are pushing back on regulation. They want to continue the status quo since the old system worked so well for them.

It has long been recognized that those America's banks that are too big to fail are also too big to be managed. If it too big to break up as AIG supposedly is, it is a monopoly that should be broken up. Lately it seems that the only place in the world that is willing to discipline the mega-corporations is the European Union. The EU has hit Microsoft and Intel with huge billion dollar fines for anti-competitive behavior.

America has expanded its corporate safety net to commercial banks to investment banks. This is not socialism, but an extension of long-standing corporate welfarism. The rich and powerful turn to the government to help them whenever they can, while needy individuals get little .

We need to break up the too-big-to-fail banks. Bankers are hardly the captains of industry and creators of wealth. They are closer to faceless bean counters. These banks are too politically powerful. They should be broken up and regulated.

The real struggle between the political parties seems to be taxation. The Republicans want to cut the taxes for the affluent under the guise of supply side economics which many Democratic economists consider to be a conservative Trojan horses. The Democrats want increasing tax revenues to restart the economy and to rebuild the American infrastructure.

The Republican argument is that the rich pay to much of the tax tab in the US. The rich do pay an overwhelming amount of the tax bill but the affluent also extract the lion's share of wealth and income every year. “In 2003, the upper 20% household, who were home to roughly 25% of persons, earned 49.7% of all income before and 39.6% of income, after size adjustments.” Wealth distribution in the US is far worse particularly since capital gains tax was cut to 15 per cent. Most of the income and wealth of the millionaires and billionaires in the US is derived from capital gains not ordinary income.

According to Wikipedia, a study by the Southern Economic Journal found that "71 percent of American economists believe the distribution of income in the US should be more equal, and 81 percent feel that the redistribution of income is a legitimate role for government."

Data from the United States Department of Commerce and Internal Revenue Service show that income inequality has been increasing since the 1970s. As of 2006, the United States had one of the highest levels of income inequality, as measured through the Gini index, among high income countries, comparable to that of some middle income countries such as Russia or Turkey.

Most of this class warfare can be explained by the rise of the GOP after Lydon Johnson passed the Voting rights Act which gave blacks bare bone civil rights protection at the polls. Most of the Dixiecrats left the Democratic party and became Republicans. The GOP had won five of nine presidential elections since 1980.

Since Reagan the GOP has made conscious efforts to dismantle the New Deal reforms of FDR. The Republicans rescinded the Glass-Steagal Act (1933) in 1999 which kept barriers between the investment and commercial banks. Senator Byron Dorgan of North Dakota predicted this would result in a financial meltdown in about 10 years.

The Securities and Exchange Commission also caused the current crisis. A former SEC official, Lee Pickard, who says a rule change in 2004 led to the failure of Lehman Brothers, Bear Stearns, and Merrill Lynch.

The SEC allowed five firms — the three that have collapsed plus Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley-- to more than double the leverage they were allowed to keep on their balance sheets. The companies were also allowed to remove discounts that had been applied to the assets they had been required to keep to protect them from defaults.

The Republican class warfare agenda includes tax cuts for the affluent, corporate welfare, deregulation, privatization and anti-labor activities. As Ian Walsh has pointed out there has been class war and the rich won because the middle class sat on its kiester and let it happen. Where do we go from here?

Continued support of President Obama and the Democrats seems to be the only way out. The Republicans are fighting each other the consensus seems to be that the party wants to stay to the right to maintain the inequality the GOP has created. The GOP appears to have few solutions for middle class Americans.
