10 reasons Republicans think their party’s dysfunctional - Salon.com

The GOP has a huge dilemma. First of all, there aren't enough Republicans to win national elections. It has become a minority regional party.

Second there are a wing of crazies in the party that have been there for decades. The Tea party and Rush Limbaugh's ditto heads seems to have a lot in common.

The moderates in the GOP have been pushed aside by the Club for Growth who challenges moderate Republican incumbents in primaries. If the moderate candidate survives the primary, he or she has their campaign funds depleted by the primary fight, making it more difficult to win in the general election.

One solutions that moderates are advocating is to purge the GOP of Rush and his ditto heads. This sounds great but it could generate a third party movement. In addition  the GOP will lose a huge chunk of its base making it harder than ever to win elections.

A simpler solution would be to push rush off the air as well as other wing nits

So the GOP is between a rock and hard pace, it cannot afford to alienate the right wing crazies who are led by people lime Michelle Bachmann, Rick Santorum and Sarah Palin.

However, when candidates try to appeal to his base as Mitt Romney did, it will lose the center filed with independents and moderates.

Rightardia predicts there will be a lot of rhetoric on the election loss but little change in the party will occur.

The GOP will continue to lose elections.

Check out the excellent Salon.com article on GOP dysfunction.

WIN: Hundreds of Chicago low wage workers form new union

By Doug Cunningham

Hundreds of low-wage food and retail workers in Chicago today launched a new union called the Workers Organizing Committee of Chicago as they rallied to push for a $15 an hour wage and a union contract.
Two hundred worker leaders from 100 stores held a founding convention for the new union, then rallied and marched through Chicago’s Magnificent Mile. Satoria Briggs spoke with Workers Independent News via cell phone form the rally in Chicago. Briggs stated:
I mean I just feel like it’s time the 99 percent to stand up. It’s time that we stop sitting there and just accepting what is thrown in our laps. Because at the end of the day we’re the ones working the long hours, tired, beat, hungry. And you know, it’s a shame that I can work a week’s pay – work for a week – and I can’t even make it to the next week. We have a worker here who’s worked 26 years at McDonald’s and still makes $8.25 an hour.
The workers say their “Fight For $15” hopefully will bring more scrutiny to the impact low wage jobs have on families and communities nationwide.

Wages are now so low for millions of workers around the country that they are below the poverty line.

A recent report written by the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign’s Dr. Mark Doussard says 31.2 percent of workers aged 18-64 in Chicago are working in low-wage jobs.

Rightardia is sympathetic. Retail is notorious for low wage part-time jobs with no benefits This is case of the fast food industry as well.

The Walton family who founded Walmart and Sam's Club makes as much income as the bottom 30 per cent of Americans.

John Schnatter of Papa John's infamy, lives in a 40,000 square foot castle like a feudal prince.

Because retail and fast food wages are so low, many people who work in these industries qualify for Medicaid and and SNAP (food stamps). So the federal government and the taxpayers ends up subsidizing these workers.

The right wing will scream about ending welfare and getting people off of the plantation, but this isn't a welfare problem. It is a corporate greed problem. T

The Young Turk interviews Allen Grayson

This man is a real progressive, accept no imitations

A few days ago, Alan Grayson was back on national TV with Cenk Uygur, host of "The Young Turks," talking about the so-called "fiscal cliff." Here is what they said:

CENK UYGUR: What's unacceptable is how Washington continues to screw the Middle Class over. Now a guy who has been fighting against that is Representative Alan Grayson. He's a former congressman and a future congressman because he just got elected to Florida's [9th] District in Orlando. Congressman Grayson, [it's] great to have you here. First of all, talk to me about the "Grand Bargain." As it is currently structured, are you in favor of it or against it?

ALAN GRAYSON: I'm entirely against it. Look, Naomi Klein wrote a whole book about this, called The Shock DoctrineThis is an artificial shock. It's being induced in order to be able to justify policies you could not possibly justify on their merits, and I think that people are getting very frustrated about this. The polls clearly show that over three quarters of the population doesn't want any cuts in benefits in Social Security, or any cuts in benefits for Medicare, in order to be able to reduce the deficit. What they want, a majority, want cuts in the defense budget, and they want an end to the war in Afghanistan to reduce the deficit. And instead what we are seeing is this artificial creation [of a crisis], right after we saw a real crisis. We saw a real crisis in Hurricane Sandy, and that's what a real crisis looks like. An artificial crisis is being instituted to steal from us, to steal from the Middle Class, and to steal from people in need.

CENKIt's so refreshing to hear a Democratic Congressman actually say that. So now, unfortunately, not only do you have the Republicans against you, it appears that you've got the Administration against you. They can't wait to do this Grand Bargain. So how in the world do progressive Democrats fight back to make sure it doesn't happen?

ALAN: Well, first we have to make sure people understand there is a third choice. We can't have the Republican Party saying, "We want to strip away your Medicare and your Social Security," like they do in the Ryan Budget, which they all voted for and which passed the House, and then have the Democratic Party say, "Have half." That doesn't work. There's got to be a third alternative. Somebody has to say, "No, that's just not the way we are going to do this. We're not going to strip money from the people in need. We're not going to throw Grandma from the train. We're just not going to do it."

What you're going to see is that this will become a litmus test. This will become a litmus test in the Democratic Party, in the same way that favoring tax cuts for the rich has become a litmus test for the Republican Party. Anybody who votes for cuts in Social Security and cuts in Medicare can expect a primary in the year 2014.

CENK: That would be terrific. Now, as you go into this Congress, and unfortunately you are going to get there after the lame duck session, where they might cut this Grand Bargain. How much of a fighting squad do you have with you? How many progressives can stand up and actually say that? Is it a large enough block to actually throw a roadblock into what's happening?

ALAN: Yes, but it shouldn't come to that. The Democratic Party should be united. We are the Party that created Social Security. We are the Party that created Medicare. We should stand behind it. We should protect it. It's amazingly popular among the voters. Why should we shoot ourselves in the head by saying we're going to end these programs, we're going to cut back these programs, when we created them and the voters love them?

CENK: It is such a good question. Unfortunately there is no good answer for that, except for the fact that, of course, a lot of the Democratic Party establishment also takes money from corporations, and the rich and the powerful, and so no matter what the election says, the rich and the powerful including the defense contractors wind up winning anyway. We hope that you can be successful in your fight back on the policy issues. And, as always, thank you so much for joining us Congressman Grayson.

ALAN: Thank you very much. It's a pleasure. Thank you.

Urantian Sojourn: The Romnesia Dream

"DURING THE EARLY DAYS OF WORLD WAR I, many soldiers began reporting an unusual array of medical symptoms after combat: headache, dizziness, tinnitus, tremor, and often, amnesia.

By December of 1914, between 4% to 10% of all British troops were suffering from apparent nervous and mental shock. But the actual term “shell shock” came into use somewhat later to reflect an assumed link between the symptoms being reported and the effects of explosions from artillery shells, bombs, grenades, and other munitions.

So when a Romney campaign adviser flippantly characterized Romney, a man who has never seen a moment of military combat, as “shell shocked” on the evening of his historic loss, I immediately recalled Ann Romney‘s concern about his “mental well-being.”

Had he really spent so much time in the Echo Chamber of the Right-Wing Entertainment Industry, listening to the endless barrage of alternate reality bullshit that he was dizzy, tremulous, and amnesic in the face of his sudden exposure* to reality? . . "
