Al Jazeera English--Breaking ranks: The sidelining of two conservative giants

San Pedro, CA - "A few weeks ago, Florida Republican Allen West claimed there are "78 to 81" Democrats in Congress who are members of the Communist Party. Despite the outrageous nature of West's accusation, his comments caused barely a ripple in Washington politics. There was no wave of outrage, no gnashing of teeth, no Republican leaders were pressured - much less forced - to condemn him. Indeed, in today's atmosphere, where a majority of GOP voters still doubt or deny that President Obama was born in America, West's remarks barely seemed to register at all.

At the same time, it goes without saying that no Democrat in Congress ever said there are "78 to 81" Republicans who are members of the Nazi Party. And if, by wild improbable chance, anyone did say that, the result would be an immediate firestorm. It would be all across FOX News, of course, but they would hardly be alone. "

This is an excellent article about US politics. it suggest the GOP is the problem in Washington but the centrist Democrats aren't helping matters, 

As Paul Krugman has stated: 

When future historians write about the fall of the American Republic, they will of course lay primary blame on the extremists of the right, who set out deliberately to destroy it. But they will also lay heavy blame on all the centrists and Serious People who not only refused to admit what was happening, but ostracised and silenced anyone who tried to point it out.


The real irony is that the conservatives who have been predicting the decline and fall of the American empire are the ones who are bringing it about.

Al Jazeera English: 'The Republican Brain': Probing the limits of Left and Right

Rightardia has written about this before. There are substantial cognitive differences between liberals and conservatives. Some of this is caused by brain structure: extreme right wingers have larger amygdalas and liberals have larger corpus callosums.


It is as if humans are descended from at least two different lineages. Certainly, some of the differences are nurture as much as nature. This is a lengthy Al Jazeera article but worth reading.

The survey, " Political Conservatism as Motivated Social Cognition", covered 88 studies over a period of five decades of research. A July 22 press release said the four researchers:

"report that at the core of political conservatism is the resistance to change and a tolerance for inequality, and that some of the common psychological factors linked to political conservatism include:

• Fear and aggression
• Dogmatism and intolerance of ambiguity
• Uncertainty avoidance
• Need for cognitive closure."

The black and white world of the far right conservative and women

Right wing nuts see the world in black and white. A good example are the views of these folks on race and the conservative view that America was founded as a white Christian nation.

Conservatism functions more like a reaction to liberalism than a philosophy that has a clear set of values.

For example, young people in high school need sexual abstinence, not sex education. Chastity rings are certainly more effective than the pill, aren't they?

Whoops, abstinence didn't work and a young women is preggers. Well, don't even think about an abortion, young lady. According to Rick Santorum, even if a women is raped, the pregnancy is a gift from God.

By the way, once your "gift from God" is born, don't ask a conservative government for help raising your child. Raise that child on your bootstraps and don't put your hand out for government welfare.

Regarding taxes, if we cut the income, tax, the capital gains tax and the estate tax for American's most productive people, the affluent, this will create jobs for a welfare queen like yourself. We did this when GW Bush was president and look how the Ownership society thrived.

The Great Recession and the sub-prime mortgage crises would have been a lot worse of Bush hadn't cut those taxes.

Had you remembered America was founded a white Christian nation, you would have never gotten preggers to begin width. Those who attend church are less affected by the sins of the flesh.

Go to church, harlot before I have to cast the first stone!

I used to be a conservative and I watch these debates and I'm wondering, I don't think I've changed, but it's a little troubling sometimes when people are appealing to people's fears and emotion rather than trying to get them to look over the horizon for a broader perspective and that's kind of where we are, 


I think it changes when we get to the general election. I hope.


Bush went on to suggest that increases in the tax tables for affluent Americans are punishing them for being successful.

Let us all pray and grieve for the rich who pay taxes at a lower tax rate than the average American.

What is the agenda of the Tea Party?

Looking at emails from the Tea Party, one does not get a clear understanding of what he agenda is.

Most of the emails suggests that something is wrong with America, Obama is not one of us and we need to do something to fix America. That would be to elect more do nothing Tea Party drones like Allen West.

Today's Tea Party email is little clearer. The problem is really socialism. The same email says we need to 'secure Social Security first' which is peculiar because Social Security is the biggest social reform in the history of our nation.

Who in fact are afraid more than anybody of the Democrats? That would be the multi-millionairess and billionaires who are the one per cent. Whether the Tea party likes it or not, almost all countries have mixed economics with both free enterprise and social programs that the Right calls socialism

China is a great example. It has a Communist political system with both a socialistic and free market economy. The Chinese are doing great.

It's not a coincidence that the words conservative and conformity start with the same prefix: con-.

What is a conformist. Wikipedia has a great definition:

Conformity is the act of matching attitudes, beliefs, and behaviours to what individuals perceive is normal to their society or social group. This influence occurs in small groups and/or society as a whole, and may result from subtle unconscious influences, or direct and overt social pressure. Conformity can occur in the presence of others, or when an individual is alone. For example, people tend to follow social norms when eating or watching television, even when alone.

People often conform from a desire for security within a group—typically a group of a similar age, culture, religion, or educational status. Unwillingness to conform carries the risk of social rejection. In this respect, conformity can be a means of avoiding bullying or deflecting criticism from peers, though it can also reflect suppression of personality.

Another word for conformists is scheeple, Accoring to the uban distionery sheeple are:

People unable to think for themselves. Followers. Lemmings. Those with no cognitive abilities of their own.

What our corporations want are highly skilled scheeple who do their job, never complain and accept what corporations offer them. Corporations and the one per cent want the status quo.

The corporatits don't want employees who want to unionize to get better pay and benefits. The corporatists also want a strong military that protect the international assets of corporations and prefer to spend grandiose amounts of tax dollars on defense that is detrimental to infrastructure spending.

The one per cent and their Tea Party minions know that the Democrats and other progressive groups in our society want to enlarge and strengthen the middle class.

The cult of the one per cent is about herding and controlling sheeple. It is also about income and wealth inequality.

That, of course, is why the one per cent worry about the Democratic party and progressive social policies. Their wealth income and influence of the 1 per cent is reduced as a consequence of progressive laws and taxes.

Liberal pundits are more likely than conservatives to predict correctly

Students at Hamilton College under the public policy professor P. Gary Wyckoff have subjected 26 of your favorite pundits to rigorous content analysis.

Their research paper, titled "Are Talking Heads Blowing Hot Air," the Hamilton College students "sampled the predictions of 26 individuals who wrote columns in major newspapers and/or appeared on the three major Sunday television news shows (Face the Nation, Meet the Press, and This Week) over a 16 month period from September 2007 to December 2008." 

They used a scale of 1 to 5 (1 being “will not happen," 5 being “will absolutely happen”) to rate each prediction the pundits made, and then they evaluated each prediction for whether or not it came true. 

Here is what they found:

The students discovered that a few factors impacted a prediction's accuracy. The first is whether or not the prediction is a conditional; conditional predictions were more likely to not come true. 

The second was partisanship; liberals were more likely than conservatives to predict correctly. The final significant factor in a prediction's outcome was having a law degree; lawyers predicted incorrectly more often.

It is not surprising that liberal pundits are more accurate than conservatives. 


Many conservative pundits like Rush Limbaugh are under-educated and never developed the rigorous analytical thought process that is essential in college. Many conservatives take an overly sentimental, simplistic and emotional view of politics.

Wikipedia compared to Conservapedia

Wikipedia has an 11 rating on Netcraft and an 8 on Alexa. This is quite impressive to have such high and converged ratings form two very different companies that rate Internet audiences.

Conservapedia is not so fortunate: It has a 77177 rating from Netcraft and 59154 rating from Alexa.

The Democgraphics are interesting, too. Wikipedia has very even distribution among the viewer ages and sex, and is overrepresented by people with graduate educations and under-represented by people with no college.

Conservapedia is greatly overrepresented by young people 18-24 and men. Most of the viewers have no college or some college. It is under-represented by viewers with college or graduate school.

The difference between progressives and conservatives.

During the holiday season I saw a Star Trek move that I had never seen before that was excellent: it was Star Trek Nemesis that was  made in 2002 and had Patrick Stewart, Jonathan Frakes , Brent Spiner , LeVar Burton, Michael Dorn, Gates McFadden and Marina Sirtis.

This was the premier Star Trek cast. the only other Star Trek shows we ever watch in the office is  Star Trek: Enterprise with Scott Bakula as Jonathan Archer.

Middle Class Warrior, my boss, thought Gates McFadden was one of the most beautiful women on television in her time. She hid an excellent figure under her Star Trek tunic.

However, Marina Sirtis had put on some weight and she looked amazing in the movie, too.

The plot on Star Trek Nemesis centers around Shinzon who has been cloned from Jon Luc Picard, the captain of the enterprise. The dialogue between Shinzon and Picard explains the difference between conservatives and progressives.

Shinzon: Surrender, Captain.

Picard: Give up your anger, Shinzon. Think of what a better person you could become -- a great and noble and respected man, just like me.

Shinzon was raised on the slave planet, Remus, and was created for a single in-the-box purpose, to destroy the Earth. That was all he cared about.

Captain Jean-Luc Picard uses a progressive argument. Get out of your box.You can more than the destroyer of the earth. You can be a better person.

His comments are alien to Shinzon as are progressive ideas to conservatives.

Conservatives like the status quo. They like the box because the box is safer than the threatening world outside of the box.

Progressives are out of the box types. they want to experience new things .

This is clear in the opening title sequence of most episodes of Star Trek:

These are the voyages of the starship Enterprise. Its five-year mission: to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations, to boldly go where no man has gone before.

Latin: to boldly go where no man has gone before.

In fact, the Star Trek captains always refer to themselves as explorers rather than warriors. Conservatives prefer to the warrior title.

There are explorer genes in humans. In 1999 scientists observed that populations who migrated farther in the past 30,000 to 1,000 years ago had a higher frequency of 7R/long alleles.

They also showed that nomadic populations had higher frequencies of 7R alleles than sedentary ones. More recently it was observed that the health status of nomadic Ariaal men from Northern Kenya was higher if they had 7R alleles.

 A meta-analysis of 11 studies also find that another polymorphism in another gene, the -521C/T. It showed an association with novelty seeking.

It's the progressives that move society forward and have given women, minorities and gays civil rights. it's progressives that understand that the US can be a greater country than it is.

Conservatives live in the past and try to convince Americans that we are already the greatest country in the world.

With the conservative mindset, there is really nothing left to improve, is there?

Conservatives think the Founders had already figured everything out more than 200 years ago.

How does liberalism differ from socialism?

There are important and fundamental differences between socialism and liberalism.

When critics attempt to slander liberals by calling them "socialists," liberals should immediately challenge them to define the difference between liberalism and socialism.

If they cannot, or continue to claim that they are the same, liberals should then chide them for being novices in political science, unable to define even the most basic terms of the debate.

Socialism means that workers, not private owners, would own and control the means of production: factories, farmland, machinery, and so on.

In democratic elections, workers would vote for

1.  their supervisors
2. their representatives to a local and national council of their industry or service
3. their representatives to a central congress representing all the industries and services.

Socialism has been proposed in many forms, ranging from republics to direct democracies, from centralized state bureaucracies to free market anarchy. Political scientists do not view the "socialism" nominally practised by the Soviet Union as true socialism .

Soviet socialism was, essentially, a dictatorship over workers by a ruling elite, often referred to as the vanguard.

By comparison, liberals believe that private owners should own and control the means of production, formulate company policy, and have the right to select their own management team. Liberals would prevent them from abusing their powers through checks and balances like strong labor unions and democratic government.

Liberal thought originated in the enlightenment and is older than conservative thought. Both he French and US revolutions were based up liberal ideas. Many political scientists refer to conservative thought in the US as neo-liberal.

Some political scientists  beleive China has a more effective government than the US. The Chinese government is, in fact, communist. The economy is mixed and has elements of both private enterprise and socialism . The Chinese leaders consider their government to be in the first phase of communism.

Corporations have far less power in China and Russia. If a company execitve embezzles a large sum of public money in China, he or she can be executed. 

If corporation get involved in politics in Russia, the executives can be jailed and that is exactly what happened to the CEO of Yukos Energy. The Russian government also took back control of Yukos.

Are liberals and progressives against private enterprise? No.

Many of us would like to see corporate power curtailed in politics and more misbehaving executives jailed with long prison sentences. We would like to see the Citizens United Supreme court ruling overturned as well.

10 Conservative Lies and Myths

The Founders were 10 feet tall and in complete agreement on the Constitution of the US. Guards were actually situated around the Constitutional Convention so that eavesdroppers would not be able to listen to the arguments of the delegates.

The US Constitution was written to protect the right of it citizens. This is untrue because the Bill of Rights (the First 10 amendments) were added into the US Constitution based on the Virginia Bill of Rights written by James Mason.

The Founders were deeply religious. Some of the really important Founders like Jefferson and Franklin were deists. They believed in God but not organized religion. Franklin once said that light houses were more useful than churches. Jefferson rewrote the Bible to remove the spurious mysticism of the Four Evangelicals.

The US is a Christian nation. The treaty of Tripoli signed by John Adams and approved by the full Senate states in Article 11: . . . the Government of the United States of America is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion.

US law is founded on the 10 commandments. US law is actually based upon English Common Law. US law does not address any of the first five commandments. Six , eight and nine are against criminal law and seven and nine can lead to divorce in civil law. Republicans break 10 consistently.

The Civil War was fought to protect states right or to end slavery. Neither of the preceding is true. The CSA Constitution contained the same federal supremacy clause that the US Constitution had, In addition, the government of Lincoln did not want to end slavery, it wanted to stop the expansion of it in new US territories.

The Republican Party is the war party. The GOP is big on defense spending, but the public has not trusted it in times of crises. Democratic Presidents such as Woodrow Wilson and FDR were elected respectively in WW 1 and WW 2. John Kennedy was also the president who escalated the US involvement in the Vietnam War.

The Great Depression was caused by the Democratic Party. Harding Coolidge and Hoover were Republican presidents between 1921 and 1933. Most historians most often attribute the start of the Great Depression to the sudden and total collapse of US stock market prices on October 29, 1929, known as Black Tuesday.

The Nazis were socialistic and atheistic. The Nazis were right wing fascists and allied with Benito Mussolini who coined the term 'fascism.' The US was allied with the UK and Russia. The Russians had a socialistic economy and communist political system.

The Nazis did have a socialistic wing called the SA, but Hitler had the SA purged during the Night of the Long Knives. In addition, the Nazis were religious zealots who were looking for the Ark of the Covenant and the Holy Grail. Their tanks and aircraft were marked with Teutonic crosses.

Most Republicans at the time were isolationist and America Firsters. The GOP wanted the US to stay out of the war. This became impossible when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. Germany declared war on the US shortly thereafter.

The US won World War 2. Certainly the US defeated the Japanese forces in the Pacific, but the US contribution was more limited in the European theater. We provided massive aid in supplies and weapons systems to both the UK and the Soviet Union.

Most of the US casualties in Europe were in the air because the Normandy invasion did not start until June in 1944. By then the Russians had pushed the Germans out of Russia altogether. The Soviets deserve most of the credit for destroying the German Wehrmacht.

American Conservative Party is greatly needed

Rightardia thinks the creation of this party is a good idea. Rush Limbaugh's and Glen Beck's supporters would agree with most of the Conservative Party positions. This party appears to be pro-HIB immigration , but very much against illegal immigration from Mexico. The conservative Party is also opposed to eminent domain which there is a constitutional basis and a judicial basis for.


The value that the individual is sovereign is not mentioned in the Constitution or any other law that Rightardia is aware of. Likewise, a child born in the US is considered a US citizen. That is the law.

The Conservative Party believes each adult citizen is responsible for the health, education and welfare of himself or herself and their family. It also wants to eliminate the Department of Education. Rightardia doubts that the average American could afford these ideas that would privatize education. 

The flat tax or fair tax is a regressive tax that has had a negative effect on the middle class since Ronald Reagan flattened the tax tables in the 1980s. Only millionaires, the uninformed and fools support flat taxes. 

Of interest, most taxes such as sales tax and municipal taxes are regressive. Income Tax is one of the few progressive taxes in the US and Theodore Roosevelt, a Republican, was the first president to advocate a progressive income tax. 

Regardless, we support the addition of a third political party in the US.  

The Creed of the ACP is a belief system of how we feel a just government and its citizens should interact.

The ACP Creed

We Believe:

• the legitimacy of government exists only as long as it defends human liberty.
• the origin of human liberty predates government, and therefore liberty cannot be repealed by government.
• the existence of human liberty presupposes the right to defend it, and the basic right to live begets the rights of self-defense and free expression.
• the self-ownership evident in human liberty begets basic rights over one’s self and time, and that the right to pursue happiness and self-fulfillment originate here.

Federalism and Social Issues

• We reject the practice of using Government powers for any purpose of social engineering, and we uphold the principle that the individual is sovereign; where social conduct involves personal choices, the People are best served when those choices are embraced and defended at the family and community level.

Authority of Government

• The citizens of the United States are the sole source of power and life of the United States Government. All powers and authority not explicitly given by the citizens to their representatives remain with the states or the people thereof.
  

• The United States Government has the authority and obligation to protect its citizens and their liberties from all actual and perceived threats regardless of the source, location or scope.

Limitations on Government

• The federal legislature may make no law that abridges or limits the Constitutional rights of an individual. 
  

• No state may abridge a citizen's right to life, liberty, or property without due process of law.
  

• Property currently owned or controlled by the Government is held in Trust for the citizens 
  

• Regardless of compensation, no property shall be forcibly taken by government for private use or profit.

Citizenship

• Any child, born of a citizen, shall have all the legal rights of a citizen born or naturalized into the United States.
  

• Persons who are not citizens or resident aliens of the United States have no right to petition or benefit from any agency of the government except for petition of entry or asylum.
  

• A child born in the United States to non-citizens is not a citizen.

Citizen Responsibilities

• Each adult citizen is responsible for the health, education and welfare of himself or herself and their family.
  

• No adult citizen may call on the resources of another citizen or group of citizens without their explicit, expressed consent.
  

• No citizen or group of citizens, by expression of any character or physical trait, may call upon the resources, nor abridge the rights, of another citizen or group of citizens without their explicit, expressed consent.
  

• It is the responsibility of every citizen to participate in the political process.

Global War on Terror and Iraq and Afghanistan

• We support our service members and their missions in Iraq, Afghanistan and elsewhere. That support includes political and funding issues.
  

• We believe the proliferation of dangerous weapons (including WMD) has created a need to act against threats before they are capable of being fulfilled. We support preemption.
  

• Our national security is not just defense against threats, but protection of our borders and citizens. We support the actual, active control of our borders, including the construction of a fence on the border with Mexico. In general, it should be 870 miles as currently authorized, constructed with two physical fences separated by 15-20 feet for vehicle access; and sufficient military and border patrol to make regular patrols possible.

Education

The position has been drafted and available for review and comment.

• Establish an Institute for Educational and Academic Standards which will publish standards for educational materials and academic teaching but have no implementation/enforcement/acceptance powers.
  

• Eliminate the Department of Education, Terminate No Child Left Behind initiative and terminate federal support of the Head Start Programs.

Eminent Domain

The takings of private property for private use is to be prevented. A recent ruling of the United States Supreme Court, Kelo v. City of New London, has shown a need to reinforce the premise that the government does NOT have the right to seize, even with compensation, private property for private use.

Immigration

Immigration is the life blood of the American dream. With very few exceptions, most of us are derived from foreign stock. We support immigration, enthusiastically.

1. We believe that the limitations imposed upon the number of people that may come to this country to work under H-1B visas is a limitation on our Country's ability to compete in the global marketplace. We therefore support the lifting of limits on H-1B visas. However, an H-1B visa should be reserved for those individuals that seek to become American citizens. The term of the H-1B visa should be limited and renewable only once.

2. We support aggressive enforcement of immigration laws by:

• Increasing the fines levied against businesses that hire illegal immigrants
  

• illegal immigrants that are arrested for charges unrelated to their status be:
• deported if the charges are misdemeanor;
• deported after adjudication if the charges are felony;

3. We support amnesty/asylum petition hearings only for those illegals that present themselves to immigration authorities prior to any criminal arrest. We also support requiring those that are in the United States illegally to leave and apply for legal immigration from their country of origin

4. Legal immigrants are obligated to pursue citizenship in a timely manner and their continuing presence in the United States should be dependent upon it.

5. The United States is a country of immigrants with a unique and unifying culture. The diversity of culture is to be appreciated, not embraced. English is a unifying force and with the exception of immigration agencies and departments, all government function should be carried out in English only.

Taxes

The government needs funds to carry out the functions and tasks assigned to it by the Constitution. Taxes, fairly assessed, are the primary source of those funds. 1. The government can levy tariffs upon imports, but should do so when the cost of managing those imports imposes a burden on the government. The cost of verifying, inspecting and handling imports should be born by those seeking to deliver goods to the United States. Tariffs should not be used to increase the cost of goods being imported in order to protect or otherwise subsidize domestic goods. 2. The income tax on individuals can impose an undue burden on those earning minimal incomes. We believe a flat tax with significant personal exemptions offers the best opportunity to distribute the burden fairly.

Newsy.com: Time for Conservatives to Shine?

A new Gallup Poll says 40% of Americans consider themselves conservative, 36% moderate and 20% liberal. But is the GOP exploiting this golden opportunity?

Rightardia has seen polls like this before. One of the problems is that  some news people tend to equate conservatives to Republicans and liberals to Democrats. Most Democrats know that only about 15 per cent of the Democratic Party is liberal. The Democratic Party contains many moderates and Blue Dog conservatives as well. It is the party of the big tent.

In addition, a conservative Democrat is a different animal than a conservative Republican. You will not find many conservative Democrats watching Fox News or listening to Rush Limbaugh. Obama's political organisation, Organizing for America, is still active and it was three times as large as the McCain organization. The DCCC also outraised the NRCC but 2:1 last month.

The Democrats will not let this country slide back into fascism without a fight. You can count on it!
