Al Jazeera English--Breaking ranks: The sidelining of two conservative giants

San Pedro, CA - "A few weeks ago, Florida Republican Allen West claimed there are "78 to 81" Democrats in Congress who are members of the Communist Party. Despite the outrageous nature of West's accusation, his comments caused barely a ripple in Washington politics. There was no wave of outrage, no gnashing of teeth, no Republican leaders were pressured - much less forced - to condemn him. Indeed, in today's atmosphere, where a majority of GOP voters still doubt or deny that President Obama was born in America, West's remarks barely seemed to register at all.

At the same time, it goes without saying that no Democrat in Congress ever said there are "78 to 81" Republicans who are members of the Nazi Party. And if, by wild improbable chance, anyone did say that, the result would be an immediate firestorm. It would be all across FOX News, of course, but they would hardly be alone. "

This is an excellent article about US politics. it suggest the GOP is the problem in Washington but the centrist Democrats aren't helping matters, 

As Paul Krugman has stated: 

When future historians write about the fall of the American Republic, they will of course lay primary blame on the extremists of the right, who set out deliberately to destroy it. But they will also lay heavy blame on all the centrists and Serious People who not only refused to admit what was happening, but ostracised and silenced anyone who tried to point it out.


The real irony is that the conservatives who have been predicting the decline and fall of the American empire are the ones who are bringing it about.

Rep. Steve King is good example of a fascist wing nut

For a long time, Steve King wasn't much more to America than a guy often confused for Representative Peter King (R-N.Y.), another GOP wing nut. At times, this was understandable! Today he is the King of the fascist wing nuts.

In 2009, Steve King managed to draw attention to himself  many times. For example, King cast the lone vote against acknowledging that slaves played a role in the construction of the United States Capitol Building.

He also strangely described gay marriage as a "purely socialist concept," noting that reality television had created emerging and important markets for heterosexuals to thoroughly debase themselves in public.

He also assailed hate crimes legislation for protecting "sexual idiosyncrasies," no doubt out of nostalgia for a simpler time, when people with "sexual idiosyncrasies" were tied to fence posts and beaten or put in stocks.

Fellow wingnut,  all-star Michele Bachmann, has vowed that she will not run for president unless called to do so by the Almighty, but she nevertheless sees a presidential run in King's future, saying that she "would encourage him to consider any position for higher office."

Ms. Bachman should  definitely wait for the Lord to weigh in on that, but King could be positioning himself for a run! It just might be a run headlong at a wall, built by slaves.

Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa) also says he agrees with Texas Republican Congressman Joe Barton’s recent use of the term “shakedown” to describe the Obama administration’s actions to hold BP accountable in the wake of the massive oil spill continuing to plague the Gulf Coast.

Barton fired the criticism at the White House last week at a Capitol Hill hearing Hill related to the oil giant’s involvement in the catastrophic spill, issuing an apology to BP CEO Tony Hayward for the administration’s actions.

Now, King is running with Barton’s “shakedown” remark despite the comment being widely condemned by lawmakers on both sides of the aisle.

"I think Joe Barton was spot-on when he called it a 'shakedown,'” King told conservative radio host Laura Ingraham on Monday. “That's part of this administration's process… If you look at all they have nationalized during this administration, some started during the Bush administration, it should tell you, they want to swallow up as many Fortune 500 companies as they can."

Rightardia comment: People like the two Kings, Joe Barton, Michele Bachman, Sarah Palin, Glen Beck and Rush Limbaugh, and Rand Paul hold the fascist viewpoint that the government is subordinate to corporations and businessman, at least when the GOP doesn't control the White House.

When the GOP does control the white House, it ignores labor and environmental law that it considers inconvenient to corporations. In many respects, the GOP holds many anti-government sentiments, but oddly waves the flag whenever it can.

After World War 2, fascism was destroyed in Europe but many fascist organizations remained intact in the US because the US was spared many of the horrors that the Europeans and Japanese experienced during the war. This has resulted in big cultural differences between the US and many European nations.

Iranian nuclear disarmament depends on Israel

Frank Gaffney is a hard right ideologue that holds views similar to the former UN ambassodor John Bolton and Vice President Dick Cheney. Grover Norqueist said this in a letter about Gaffney accusing Gaffney of:

"racial prejudice, religious bigotry [and] ethnic hatred," calling Gaffney a "sick, little bigot.... His whole life screams of bigotry, and what he said is just part of a pattern.... Frank Gaffney and Osama bin Laden share the same view on the relationship between the United States and Islam. I agree with the president in rejecting Osama bin Laden's and Frank Gaffney's worldview." 

Norquest was right. Here are some other Gaffney quotes: 


“There is mounting evidence that the president not only identifies with Muslims, but actually may still be one himself.”

The evidence? “Mr. Obama referred four times in his speech to ‘the Holy Koran,’” he “established his firsthand knowledge of Islam,” and he uttered the phrase “peace be upon them” when referring to Moses, Jesus, and Mohammed.

According to Gaffney, “no believing Christian” would ever make such a statement because “for Christians, Jesus is the living and immortal Son of God.”

Here is another Gaffney quote on the iraq War: 

My position is [that] it is regrettable that any Americans died. It is regrettable that they had to die, but I believe they did have to die. The threat we did know about was the chemical capability that Saddam Hussein had used against his own people. 

The potential for biological agents were real there was evidence that there was an ongoing nuclear program... The danger was inaction could have resulted in the death[s] of a great many more Americans than 4,000 and that's the reason I'm still delighted that we did what we did."

The US has little ability to stop Iraq from developing nuclear weapons without another $ trillion war to invade Iran. Iran is developing a nuclear capability to counter the 200 tactical nuclear weapons Israel has in it arsenal. 

Without negotiations with Israel on nuclear disarmament, it is unlikely the US will make progress with Iraq.  Of course, Israel dropped out of the 47-nation conference on non-proliferation in DC on April 12 at the last minute.

An Iranian-hosted international disarmament conference concluded Sunday with a demand that Israel join the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty to assure a nuclear weapons-free Middle East.

Harris Poll: "Wingnuts" and President Obama

A recent Harris Poll seeks to measure the bizarre views of many Americans. It finds that 40% of adults believe he is a socialist. More than 30% think he wants to take away Americans' right to own guns and that he is a Muslim.

More than 25% believe he wants to turn over the sovereignty of the United States to a world government, has done many things that are unconstitutional, that he resents America's heritage, and that he does what Wall Street tells him to do.

More than 20% believe he was not born in the United States, that he is "the domestic enemy the U.S. Constitution speaks of," that he is racist and anti-American, and that he "wants to use an economic collapse or terrorist attack as an excuse to take dictatorial powers."

Twenty per cent think he is "doing many of the things that Hitler did," while 14% believe "he may be the anti-Christ" and 13% think "he wants the terrorists to win."

These are some of the results of The Harris Poll of 2,320 adults surveyed online between March 1 and 8, 2010 by Harris Interactive.

The actual percentages of adults who believe these things are true are as follows:

• He is a socialist (40%)
• He wants to take away Americans' right to own guns (38%)
• He is a Muslim (32%)
• He wants to turn over the sovereignty of the United States to a one world government (29%)
• He has done many things that are unconstitutional (29%)
• He resents America's heritage (27%)
• He does what Wall Street and the bankers tell him to do (27%)
• He was not born in the United States and so is not eligible to be president (25%)
• He is a domestic enemy that the U.S. Constitutions speaks of (25%)
• He is a racist (23%)
• He is anti-American (23%)
• He wants to use an economic collapse or terrorist attack as an excuse to take dictatorial powers (23%)
• He is doing many of the things that Hitler did (20%)
• He may be the Anti-Christ (14%)
• He wants the terrorists to win (13%)

What Republicans think

There are – no surprise here – huge differences between what Republicans and Democrats believe. Majorities of Republicans believe that President Obama:

• Is a socialist (67%)
• Wants to take away Americans' right to own guns (61%)
• Is a Muslim (57%)
• Wants to turn over the sovereignty of the United States to a one world government (51%); and
• Has done many things that are unconstitutional (55%).

Also large numbers of Republicans also believe that President Obama:

• Resents America's heritage (47%)
• Does what Wall Street and the bankers tell him to do (40%)
• Was not born in the United States and so is not eligible to be president (45%)
• Is the "domestic enemy that the U.S. Constitution speaks of" (45%)
• Is a racist (42%)
• Want to use an economic collapse or terrorist attack as an excuse to take dictatorial powers (41%)
• Is doing many of the things that Hitler did (38%).

Even more remarkable perhaps, fully 24% of Republicans believe that "he may be the Anti-Christ" and 22% believe "he wants the terrorists to win."

Differences by education

These replies are also strongly correlated with education. The less education people have had the more likely they are to believe all of these statements.

Consider these differences between those with no college education and those with post-graduate education respectively:

• He is a socialist (45% and 20%)
• He wants to take away Americans' right to own guns (45% and 19%)
• He is a Muslim (43% and 9%)
• He was not born in the United States so is not eligible to be president (32% and 7%)
• He is a racist (28% and 9%)
• He is anti-American (27% and 9%)
• He is doing many of the things Hitler did (24% and 10%).

After reviewing these findings, John Avlon comments, "These new numbers are shocking but not surprising – they detail the extent to which Wingnuts are hijacking our politics.

This poll should be a wake-up call to all Americans about the real costs of using fear and hate to pump up hyper-partisanship. We are playing with dynamite by demonizing our president and dividing our country in the process. Americans need to remember the perspective that Wingnuts always forget – patriotism is more important than partisanship."

So what?

So what indeed! These responses recall a favorite saying of our founder Lou Harris that "when you don't want to publish a poll finding you dislike, you should get out of the business."

The very large numbers of people who believe all these things of President Obama help to explain the size and strength of the Tea Party Movement, a topic that will be addressed in another Harris Poll in a few days time.

Wingnuts of the Week

Bill Maher said America is a stupid country because Sarah Palin could be elected president. Rightardia thinks a better case for a stupid America would be the election of George W. Bush for two terms. We are not convinced that Sarah Palin will ever be elected president.

We have noticed lots of stupid white people at Tea Bag protests and at recent town hall meetings on health care.We don't think America is a stupid country because of the actions of a minority of ditto heads, racists and right wing extremists. We also don't underestimate the ability of organized ignoramuses to win elections.

If America was a stupid country, it would have elected John McCain as the 44th president. 

As John Staurt Mill stated:

I never meant to say that the Conservatives are generally stupid. I meant to say that stupid people are generally Conservative. I believe that is so obviously and universally admitted a principle that I hardly think any gentleman will deny it.
