The GOP ain't what it used to be

The GOP isn't what it used to be by a long shot. Bob Dole knows and so do a lot of other senior Republicans.

The only thing that will pull the Republicans out of this far right stupor is a huge electoral defeat. It is coming.

Why the GOP lost the last election

It's because of this man and there are more than 50 of them in the US Congress.

Noam Chomsky compared these ideologues to the old Russian communists.

Republicans: We Have Great Ideals, But The People Just Don’t Get Them | Addicting Info

The GOP claims to have timeless principles but rarely has it offered impartial proof that these principles work. As the Addicting Info article points out, there is no empirical evidence the supply side economics also known as "trickle down" is effective.

Oh, sure, you can always fins a partisan hacks in Heritage.org. the Cato Institute or Fox News to say glowing thins about a GOP program, But where's the beef? Where is the proof of the pudding?

When you are in a faith-based party populated with true-believers that has little use for facts, why bother?

Mitt Romney, for example, told 533 lies in 30 weeks of his presidential campaign.

Steven Benen explained:

Mitt Romney says many, many things that are not true. He says this despite being in possession of the correct facts of the matter.
Which is to say that Mitt Romney lies. A lot. He lies more than any other national candidate for office in my lifetime. And I was born before the Nixon administration.
When the Romney campaign was confronted about its mendacity, Romney’s pollster, Neil Newhouse, said:

We’re not going to let our campaign be dictated by fact-checkers.
The GOP says it can do health care better than the Democrats, but GW Bush's Medicare part D had a lower consumer satisfaction than standard Medicare. It also has higher overhead. The Medicare Advantage prescription Drug program was an unfunded initiative.

What about limited government? Did anyone notice any limited government initiatives when Ronald Reagan or GW Bush was president? Both presidents created huge deficits and expanded the national debt.

The big favorite of the GOP is deregulation. Many pundits says the rescission of the depression era Glass-Stegall Act was a big factor in the financial meltdown and the Great Recession. That act had created a wall between the investment banks and the commercial banks that was broken down. Phil Gramm, a TX GOP senator, was the architect of this act.

Privatization is another Republican favorite. In FL, Rick Scott wants to privatize prisons and the prison industry is happy to oblige as long as the state signs a 20-year contract.

A 20-year contract! Good grief. Who in their right mind would agree to this except "the Party of the Stupid!"

The GOP has become a party of bad old conservative ideas. Ideas that don't work.  The GOP's shift to the right brought Humpty Dumpty down in the last election.

It needs to become a more moderate party to succeed  Putting a turd in a new candy wrapper won't help the Republican Party. You are still trying to sell turds!

The GOP is deluding itself.

However, the GOP is happy to live in that conservative pineapple under the sea. It doesn't really wants to find a better box to live in.

It's easier to paint the pineapple and do a little landscaping to make things look better than they were in 2012.

The GOP descent into fascsim

Rightardia has been talking about this for more than a year. Now even Republicans are aware of it. Florida has its own assortment of nuts and bolts, too.

Allen West immediately comes to mind.

Is Rightardia calling Republicans--Nazis. No, American fascism is different but the authoritarianism and desire for group think and ideological purity is apparent.

Religion is also a big factor and the GOP has been working with the Evangelical and fundamentalist churches since the first term of GW Bush.

Rightardia thinks this started with Newt Gingrich and Rush Limbaugh. We don't think it will end until the GOP suffers a series of severe election losses.

That may be a problem in itself. Plenty of people are still voting for these extremists.

FL GOP: The Toxic Avengers

From Rick Scott to Allen West, Florida Republicans have a serious branding problem. For all their over-the-top rhetoric and extreme policies, the GOP’s most outspoken leaders are threatening to drag down the GOP ticket in 2012 by damaging their appeal among Florida’s coveted independent-minded voters.

Entering the critical summer campaign months, Republican candidates are hamstrung by their party affiliation and saddled with the baggage of the Governor’s toxic approval. This deadly combination is hurting GOP candidates up and down the ballot. A recent survey by Public Policy Polling showed Florida Democratic congressional candidates holding a generic + 2 advantage over a generic Republican opponent, and internal polling reflects Democratic candidates for the state Legislature enjoy the same +2 advantage.

As the Florida GOP continue to positions themselves further and further to the extreme right, Democrats are capitalizing – putting forth a slate of candidates with deep roots in their communities and who are poised to benefit from the state’s shifting demographics in key districts across the state.

Heading into the fall elections, we take a look at the ways the GOP are damaging their brand and laying a foundation for Democratic victories.

RICK “TOXIC” SCOTT

Toxic is Rick Scott’s middle name. Just ask Mitt Romney who has visited the state 53 times – carefully avoiding the embattled Governor at each campaign stop.

DRAG ON THE TICKET

Gov. Scott’s approval rating has remained underwater since he was swept into office during the Tea Party wave of 2010, forcing the Republican Party of Florida to take to the airwaves with over a million dollars in advertisements two years out from the Governor’s re-election campaign. But the GOP’s cash infusion isn’t moving the needle, with recent poll confirming Scott’s numbers have dropped to a new low – 56-percent of voters now disapprove of the job he’s doing. In fact, state Sen. Nan Rich – whose name recognition currently stands at 14-percent – would beat Scott by a landslide of 12-points if the election for Governor were held today. Scott’s push to eliminate some people from the voter rolls “hasn't done his popularity any favors:” only 34-percent of voters approve of that effort versus 50-percent who disagree.

EXTREME AGENDA

Gov. Rick Scott and Florida Republican’s single-minded pursuit of a partisan voter purge – of which 50-percent of Floridians disapprove – is only the latest in a string of extreme measures which the Governor has prioritized.

In addition to the voter purge, Scott’s rock-bottom approval is the product of the Republicans’ unpopular and extremist initiatives. From attempting to restrict women's health care, to attempting to privatize Florida prisons for the benefit of a large political contributor, to a budget that provided zero dollars for public school construction and slashed funding for higher education, Scott and the Republicans spent their months in Tallahassee painting a perfect picture of how truly out of touch the GOP is with the concerns of Florida’s middle class families.

SCANDAL SCARRED

From the criminal fraud trial of former Republican Chairman Jim Greer to the party’s embattled Congressmen known for their unethical and extreme behavior, the GOP are swimming upstream as they work to define themselves in the eyes of voters.

JIM GREER TRIAL

The criminal fraud trial of former Republican Party Chairman Jim Greer is set to take place at virtually the same time (and just over an hour away) from the Republican National Convention in Tampa.

The dirty details of some of Florida’s top Republicans – including often mentioned VP candidate Marco Rubio – are already starting to trickle out. As more information surfaces, the scandals surrounding the RPOF will continue to damage voter’s perception of the GOP.

BUCHANAN, RIVERA, WEST

These three Republican congressmen are known for all the wrong reasons. Both Buchanan and Rivera have been under investigation by multiple law enforcement agencies for corrupt financial practices, while West, the Tea Party darling, repels Independent voters every time he opens his mouth. Polling show’s West approval is upside down at 21/30 and the numbers are even more lopsided among African Americans where he sits at 9/49.

Each of these embattled Congressmen have drawn strong challengers and are in competitive districts – but even more significantly, each time they dominate a national or statewide news-cycle, they remind Florida voters of the underlying corruption and extremism that defines Florida Republicans.

In summary, the toxic Republican brand will go head-to-head this November with strong Democratic recruits, many of whom have deep roots in their communities and are poised to help state Democrats break the GOP Supermajority, make congressional gains and re-elect President Obama and Senator Nelson.

A simple explanation of Democratic and GOP tax concepts

As you can tell from the graph, the rise of he 1 per cent started with Ronald Reagan who slashed taxes below 30 per cent for top earning Americans. This trend continued when George HW bush was president.

When George W. Bush was president, he not only gave the one per cent a $64,000 a year tax cut. He also cut the short term capital gains tax to 15 per cent and suspended the estate tax.

The estate tax is an old tax established by Theodore. Roosevelt, a Republican president.

So three Republican presidents undid the tax reforms of FDR that weakened the middle calls. Many middle class teachers, firemen and police have lost heir jobs because the tax base was reduced.

In addition, the economy has suffered because the middle calls is the consumer class and when the middle class is weakened, businesses lose customers.

Supply side economic might be a workable economic if it was oriented toward the middle calls. Giving the most affluent Americans huge tax breaks is counter-intuitive and simply doesn't work.

This is because the wealthy person may bank rather than spend the tax rebate or purchase gold and put it in a safe deposit box. The affluent could purchase stocks and bonds but this is an indirect way of stimulating the economy.

A direct grant or payment like food stamps or unemployment compensation gets more bang for the Federal tax buck and has a multiplier effect of the federal dollars because the recipient spends the money and rolls it back into the economy.

The following paragraph is verbatim form Wikipedia:

In congressional testimony given in July 2008, Mark Zandi, chief economist for Moody's Economy.com, provided estimates of the one-year multiplier effect for several fiscal policy options.

The multipliers showed that any form of increased government spending would have more of a multiplier effect than any form of tax cuts.

The most effective policy, a temporary increase in food stamps, had an estimated multiplier of 1.73.

The lowest multiplier for a spending increase was general aid to state  governments, 1.36.

Among tax cuts, multipliers ranged from 1.29 for a payroll tax holiday down to 0.27 for accelerated depreciation.

Making the Bush tax cuts permanent had the second-lowest multiplier, 0.29. Refundable lump-sum tax rebates, the policy used in the Economic Stimulus Act of 2008, had the second-largest multiplier for a tax cut, 1.26.

Obama's tax policies are based upon Keynesian economics and Mark Zandi's testimony.

Republican tax policies are based on GOP ideology and unproven economic assumptions.

Rightardia editorial: The GOP is the party of David and Debbie Downer

When the GOP doesn't have the presidency, it acts like a league of spoiled brats.

The speaker of the House John "Boohoo" Boehner is an excellent example of what I am talking about. He sounds more like Chicken Little than the House Speaker.

The sky is always falling for Republicans when they don't control the White House.

Then there is Richy Mitt, who is still asking Obama for an apology when the Democrats outed his outsourcing of jobs at Bain Capital.

It is clear that Romney didn't' really retire in 1999, but had an active role in the company form 2000 to 2002 when the Outscoring at Bain Capital started.

Then there is SC senator, Jim De Mint. He said this after Obama was elected:

if we’re able to stop Obama on this, it will be his Waterloo. It will break him.

This Debbie Downerism  portended the GOP approach toward the president and his agenda.

The Tea Party is an odd assortment of David and Debbie Downers who want to prevent America from becoming "unrecognizable."

Actually, George W. Bush did an exceptional job or turning the country upside down with his Ownership society.

Obama is trying to put "Humpty Dumpty" together again, but it has been a tough slog.

Al Jazeera English--Breaking ranks: The sidelining of two conservative giants

San Pedro, CA - "A few weeks ago, Florida Republican Allen West claimed there are "78 to 81" Democrats in Congress who are members of the Communist Party. Despite the outrageous nature of West's accusation, his comments caused barely a ripple in Washington politics. There was no wave of outrage, no gnashing of teeth, no Republican leaders were pressured - much less forced - to condemn him. Indeed, in today's atmosphere, where a majority of GOP voters still doubt or deny that President Obama was born in America, West's remarks barely seemed to register at all.

At the same time, it goes without saying that no Democrat in Congress ever said there are "78 to 81" Republicans who are members of the Nazi Party. And if, by wild improbable chance, anyone did say that, the result would be an immediate firestorm. It would be all across FOX News, of course, but they would hardly be alone. "

This is an excellent article about US politics. it suggest the GOP is the problem in Washington but the centrist Democrats aren't helping matters,

As Paul Krugman has stated:

When future historians write about the fall of the American Republic, they will of course lay primary blame on the extremists of the right, who set out deliberately to destroy it. But they will also lay heavy blame on all the centrists and Serious People who not only refused to admit what was happening, but ostracised and silenced anyone who tried to point it out.

The real irony is that the conservatives who have been predicting the decline and fall of the American empire are the ones who are bringing it about.
