FL Dems Call For an End to FL GOP's 'Lip Service' on Elections Reform

Tallahassee, FL – The Florida Democratic Party today released a new web video video calling for Gov. Rick Scott and the Florida GOP to support substantive elections reform in the wake of the disastrous 2012 elections.

"Gov. Rick Scott and the Republican-led legislature don’t seem to remember the long lines last election or that more than 200,000 Floridians were deterred from the polls because of the voter suppression law they passed," said FL Dems Executive Director Scott Arceneaux. "Florida's 2012 election debacle was an embarrassment for our state and was caused by the very party who is now offering nothing more than lip service to Florida voters. It's time for real reforms and to undo the damage done by Florida Republicans. It's time to let the people vote."

Before the start of the 2013 legislative session Senate Democrats outlined seven commonsense steps to smart elections reform. Democrats called for measures ending long lines, ensuring short summaries on ballots, providing greater flexibility in choosing early voting sites, and making 14 days of early voting mandatory.

Earlier this week the Senate Ethics and Elections Committee passed SB600 over unanimous opposition by Senate Democrats. The bill, and its House counterpart HB7013, fails to include any of the commonsense steps outlined by Senate Democrats including returning to a mandatory 14 day early voting period.

Mario Piperni: FL Early Voting Law changed to benefit GOP

Republican leaders said in proposing the Fl voter laws that it was meant to save money and fight voter fraud.

A former GOP chairman and former Gov. Charlie Crist, both of whom have been ousted from the party, now say that fraud concerns were advanced only as subterfuge for the law’s main purpose: GOP victory.

Former Republican Party of Florida Chairman Jim Greer says he attended various meetings, beginning in 2009, at which party staffers and consultants pushed for reductions in early voting days and hours. 

Greer said:

The Republican Party, the strategists, the consultants, they firmly believe that early voting is bad for Republican Party candidates. It’s done for one reason and one reason only. … ‘We’ve got to cut down on early voting because early voting is not good for us.

Florida Governor, Republican Rick Scott, bought his way into office during 2010's Tea Party hysteria, was once the CEO of Columbia/HCA. 

The company pleaded guilty to 14 felonies and agreed to a $600+ million fine in the largest fraud settlement in US history. Columbia/HCA admitted systematically overcharging the government by claiming marketing costs as reimbursable, by striking illegal deals with home care agencies, filing false data about use of hospital space, and fraudulently billing Medicare.

The Columbia/HCA board of directors asked Scott to resign as Chairman and CEO following the inquiry. He was paid $9.88 million in a settlement and left owning 10 million shares of stock worth over $350 million.

Scott promised to create 700,00 jobs in Florida.

FL GOP: The Toxic Avengers

From Rick Scott to Allen West, Florida Republicans have a serious branding problem. For all their over-the-top rhetoric and extreme policies, the GOP’s most outspoken leaders are threatening to drag down the GOP ticket in 2012 by damaging their appeal among Florida’s coveted independent-minded voters.

Entering the critical summer campaign months, Republican candidates are hamstrung by their party affiliation and saddled with the baggage of the Governor’s toxic approval. This deadly combination is hurting GOP candidates up and down the ballot. A recent survey by Public Policy Polling showed Florida Democratic congressional candidates holding a generic + 2 advantage over a generic Republican opponent, and internal polling reflects Democratic candidates for the state Legislature enjoy the same +2 advantage.

As the Florida GOP continue to positions themselves further and further to the extreme right, Democrats are capitalizing – putting forth a slate of candidates with deep roots in their communities and who are poised to benefit from the state’s shifting demographics in key districts across the state.

Heading into the fall elections, we take a look at the ways the GOP are damaging their brand and laying a foundation for Democratic victories.

RICK “TOXIC” SCOTT

Toxic is Rick Scott’s middle name. Just ask Mitt Romney who has visited the state 53 times – carefully avoiding the embattled Governor at each campaign stop.

DRAG ON THE TICKET

Gov. Scott’s approval rating has remained underwater since he was swept into office during the Tea Party wave of 2010, forcing the Republican Party of Florida to take to the airwaves with over a million dollars in advertisements two years out from the Governor’s re-election campaign. But the GOP’s cash infusion isn’t moving the needle, with recent poll confirming Scott’s numbers have dropped to a new low – 56-percent of voters now disapprove of the job he’s doing. In fact, state Sen. Nan Rich – whose name recognition currently stands at 14-percent – would beat Scott by a landslide of 12-points if the election for Governor were held today. Scott’s push to eliminate some people from the voter rolls “hasn't done his popularity any favors:” only 34-percent of voters approve of that effort versus 50-percent who disagree.


EXTREME AGENDA

Gov. Rick Scott and Florida Republican’s single-minded pursuit of a partisan voter purge – of which 50-percent of Floridians disapprove – is only the latest in a string of extreme measures which the Governor has prioritized.

In addition to the voter purge, Scott’s rock-bottom approval is the product of the Republicans’ unpopular and extremist initiatives. From attempting to restrict women's health care, to attempting to privatize Florida prisons for the benefit of a large political contributor, to a budget that provided zero dollars for public school construction and slashed funding for higher education, Scott and the Republicans spent their months in Tallahassee painting a perfect picture of how truly out of touch the GOP is with the concerns of Florida’s middle class families.


SCANDAL SCARRED

From the criminal fraud trial of former Republican Chairman Jim Greer to the party’s embattled Congressmen known for their unethical and extreme behavior, the GOP are swimming upstream as they work to define themselves in the eyes of voters.

JIM GREER TRIAL

The criminal fraud trial of former Republican Party Chairman Jim Greer is set to take place at virtually the same time (and just over an hour away) from the Republican National Convention in Tampa.

The dirty details of some of Florida’s top Republicans – including often mentioned VP candidate Marco Rubio – are already starting to trickle out. As more information surfaces, the scandals surrounding the RPOF will continue to damage voter’s perception of the GOP.

BUCHANAN, RIVERA, WEST

These three Republican congressmen are known for all the wrong reasons. Both Buchanan and Rivera have been under investigation by multiple law enforcement agencies for corrupt financial practices, while West, the Tea Party darling, repels Independent voters every time he opens his mouth. Polling show’s West approval is upside down at 21/30 and the numbers are even more lopsided among African Americans where he sits at 9/49.

Each of these embattled Congressmen have drawn strong challengers and are in competitive districts – but even more significantly, each time they dominate a national or statewide news-cycle, they remind Florida voters of the underlying corruption and extremism that defines Florida Republicans.

In summary, the toxic Republican brand will go head-to-head this November with strong Democratic recruits, many of whom have deep roots in their communities and are poised to help state Democrats break the GOP Supermajority, make congressional gains and re-elect President Obama and Senator Nelson.

Mitt's alter ego: Rick Scott

Gov Rick Scott and Attorney general Pam Bondi were involved in a clemency hearing when the Supreme Court decision was handed down.

The  FL officials were probably listening to Fox News who got the story wrong and then corrected it. Bondi was visibly shaken because she was one of the leaders in the law suit against the federal government on the individual mandate. .


Scoot held a press conference later in which he babbled incoherently about ObomneyCare. 


Rightardia was surprised by the ruling, too, but you should never count your chickens before they hatch!

NewsDaily: Florida voting rules discriminate,DOJ says

NewsDaily (2012-06-23) -- New rules in Florida that cut back on early voting hours unfairly burden the state's minorities, U.S. Justice Department lawyers argued on Thursday.


Some Democratic observers have suggested The GOP congress is angry at Attorney General Eric Holder for going after 30 states that are tinkering with voting rights to suppress minority voting. Holder has been successful so far in reigning in voter suppression.

Mitt Romney and Rick Scott: Peas from the same pod

Just what America needs need: another Rick Scott

If you want a peek of what a Mitt Romney administration would be like, take a look at Rick Scott's governorship of Florida.

Both men are fabulously wealthy and religious. Both men ran large corporations, although Scott crossed the line into illegality more than Mittens ever did.

What are some of the things Scott did when he became governor? 

First, he wanted state employees drug tested although the courts were clear that only state employees involved in worked in public safety such as police and fire fighters are subject to drug tests.

Scott also wanted welfare recipients drug tested although there was little empirical evidence that welfare recipients had a drug abuse problem

In both cases, FL and Federal courts stopped Scott in his tracks on the drug testing.

Scott also tired to privatize the FL prison system south of Orlando. What was the price: a 20 year contract with two private prison corporations. The prison guard union sued and stopped the privatization plan.

Scott has also tried to disenfranchise Hispanic voters with a faulty list that the state provided to the 67 county supervisor of elections. Almost all of the counties ignored the governor's and his Secretary of State's voter purge order.

Scott also 'reformed"the Florida unemployment compensation making much harder for workers to get unemployment compensation. Unemployed workers have to complete a 45 question test and keep detailed record of their job searches.

Would Mittens attack public sector unions as Scott walker did in Wisconsin? This also seems likely since what remains of the union movement in the US is in the public sector and these unions bankroll the Democratic party.

The GOP know that the power of white upper income plutocrats and oligarchs is being diluted by the rapid growth of minorities in the US. Obama's election in 2008 made that crystal clear.

The Republican solution: disenfranchise non-white voters and to also attack unions to weaken the Democratic opposition.

The Citizens United ruling seemed like a "Hail Mary" play on the part of a conservative Supreme Court to maintain the white dominated political status quo.

Of course, should Mitt Romney win the 2012 election, a conservative Supreme Court could be strengthened if one of the "liberal" Supremes were to retire.

The good news for Obama is that he has opened a substantial lead over Mitt Romney.

Results of a Bloomberg National Poll released Wednesday showed Mr. Obama leading Romney 53 percent to 40 percent among likely voters. 


Obama is also winning the tax debate.

Only 18 percent of Americans want the tax breaks across all income levels made permanent which is the position taken by Mitt Romney.

Romney has been reluctant to explain how he would pay for his tax plan. Cuts to programs like Medicaid, unemployment compensation and food stamps would likely be required.

Rightardia has looked closely at Mitt Romney's record as governor of Massachusetts which is his only public experience. He tried to run the state as an impersonal CEO and didn't even know the names of the key Democratic leaders who were the majority party in MA.

He used a similar impersonal approach as the director of the Salt Lake City Olympics.

America needs a leader, not an impersonal CEO.

Rightardia is also concerned about Romney's foreign policy ideas. He believes Russia is the greatest enemy of the US that is a throw back to the Cold War era.

He also was a former Mormon bishop and stake holder and is likely to harbor christo-fascist and Zionist views. His friendship with the prime Minister of Israel could lead the US into a regional war in the middle east and conflict with Russia, a scenario Obama has tried to scrupulously avoid.

Romney has also indicated he will increase defense spending which is the basis of the national debt.

A Romney presidency should be frightening the average American. Increased defense spending could push the US into another recession or worse, lead to a regional war that the US could lose.

Florida survey show Charlie Crist walloping Rick Scott

The quarterly Florida Omnibus Survey TM included a question to test a hypothetical gubernatorial match-up between Republican Rick Scott and Charlie Crist, running as the Democrat Party’s nominee.

The results indicate that, overall, 34% of voters in Florida would vote to re-elect Governor Scott, while a plurality of 48% would opt for challenger Crist, running as a Democrat. 


The remaining 18% of voters were either undecided or volunteered that they prefer other candidates. 

As the graphic insert illustrates, while Scott leads among Republican voters, his net advantage is only 39%, while Crist has a net advantage of 61% among Democrat voters and 30% among independents and voters of other minor parties or those who are unaffiliated.
