No media coverage for pariah Israeli PM

The White House has waved off suggestions that President Barak Obama was "embarrassed" to be photographed with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, amid questions over the minimal media coverage of their meeting in Washington this week.

When asked in a press conference on Wednesday whether he saw "any contradiction at all when the Secretary of State goes before AIPAC and says that the U.S. has no stronger, no closer ally than Israel - and then the President won't even allow a photograph of him and the Israeli Prime Minister", Gibbs responded: "No, I don't see a contradiction at all."

Why is there such a frosty relationship between Obama and Netanyahu?  Rightardia can think of a couple of reasons.

1. Neo-conservative Americans Jews lobbied for the US to invade Iran to neutralize an enemy of Israel using  flimsy pretenses. This proxy war has already cost the US nearly $ one trillion. Even Washington Republicans are now admitting the war was a mistake.

2. The Israeli government made it very clear they preferred John McCain aover Obama during the 2008 Presidential campaign.

3. The Birther conspiracy of Orly Taitz has some connections to the Likud government of Netanyahu. Taitz  was supposed to be going to London to have Obama's "Kenyan birth certificate' authenticated, but then ended up in Tel Aviv for unknown reasons. Taitz has also claimed that Natenyahu made a request to be added to Taitz's Facebook account.

Rightardia finds the You Tube video amusing because Israel is hardly in the same league as Russia and China or for that matter any of the other nations in the video.

Group Wants “Confederate Southern American” As Census Category

Confederate rights activists want southerners with Confederate ancestors to declare themselves “Confederate Southern Americans” to qualify for national origin protection under the 1964 Civil Rights Act.

Of course, the Confederate states of America existed for about 5 years and the US had not even been a country for 100 years when the Civil War started.

Al Jazeera: Obama has a 'Come to Jesus meeting with Israeli PM Binyamin Netanyahu

Obama walked out of one of the meetings with Netanyahu

Binyamin Netanyahu is gathering his ministers to discuss a package of gestures to offer the Palestinians [EPA]

Netanyahu, Israel's prime minister, has called a crisis "inner cabinet" meeting after returning from difficult talks in the US over the issue of settlement activity in occupied East Jerusalem.

The extraordinary meeting, held on Friday, follows Netanyahu's return from a troubled-three day visit to Washington where he failed to resolve a diplomatic crisis over Israel's settlement building plans.

Israel is struggling to get relations with the US back on track after Israel earlier this month announced plans to build 1,600 settlements on occupied Palestinian land.

The move prompted the Palestinians to pull out of indirect peace talks with Israel and caused a rift with Washington as the announcement came during a visit to Israel by Joe Biden, the US vice-president.

Zvi Hauser, Netanyahu's cabinet secretary, said the group of seven senior ministers would consider a package of goodwill gestures drawn up during Netanyahu's US visit.

"All aspects of the issue will be examined and they will formulate Israel's position according to Israel's interests and in the time needed to do so," he said.

'Goodwill gestures'

Sherine Tadros, Al Jazeera's correspondent in Jerusalem, said the cabinet would likely focus on three issues.

"Firstly, the idea of putting core issues like the status of Jerusalem on the negotiating table between Israel and the Palestinians even before they get to negotiations at the so-called indirect proximity talks stage.

"Secondly is the issue of releasing 2,000 or so Palestinian prisoners from Israeli jails in a move to bolster the confidence behind Mahmoud Abbas, the Palestinian president.

"Thirdly, an idea to put some of the Israeli-controlled areas of the West Bank under the authority of the Palestinian Authority," she said.

"But what is clear is that Israel hasn't changed its stance on construction in East Jerusalem and that has put it on a collision course with the Obama administration."

Hauser said it was unlikely there would be quick agreement from the discussions and denied media reports of a US deadline to supply answers by Saturday night.

While in Washington, Netanyahu met Barack Obama, the Israeli prime minister, but with no statement after the meeting, speculation has been rife about the atmosphere during the talks.

The Fox News website on Friday reported that Obama had walked out of one of the meetings with Netanyahu after failing to gain a written promise of concessions on settlement activity.

The report went on to say that the US president invited Netanyahu to stay at the White House, consult with advisers and "let me know if there is anything new", according to a US congressman who spoke to the prime minister.

Difficult meeting

No public statements were made by the two leaders following the meeting, no photo opportunities were presented and no access was granted for reporters.

But Robert Gibbs, the White House press secretary, rejected claims that Obama was avoiding publicity, saying: "This is the way we felt most comfortable handling this one."

Following Netanyahu's return, Nir Hefez, the prime minister's spokesman, told Israel's army radio that Israel had achieved understandings with the US, which included a point that "construction policy in Jerusalem doesn't change".

But Mark Regev, a spokesman for the prime minister's office, quickly clarified that Hefez was "articulating the Israeli position ... not articulating a joint position".

Before peace talks can move forward, the Palestinians want a complete Israeli settlement freeze in occupied East Jerusalem and the rest of the West Bank.

"There is absolutely nothing new, as of this moment, regarding the situation facing the peace process," Nabil Abu Rdainah, an aide to Mahmoud Abbas, the Palestinian president, said.

Abbas is likely to discuss the situation with the Arab League, which meets in Libya on Saturday.

Update:  According to the UK Telegraph, Mr Obama  presented Mr Netanyahu with a list of 13 demands designed both to the end the feud with his administration and to build Palestinian confidence ahead of the resumption of peace talks. Key among those demands was to halt all new settlement construction in east Jerusalem.

When the Israeli prime minister stalled, Mr Obama walked out of the meeting declaring: "I'm going to the residential wing to have dinner with Michelle and the girls." He didn't invite Netanyahu to the family gathering.

As he left, Mr Netanyahu was told to consider the error of his ways. "I'm still around," Mr Obama is quoted by Israel's Yediot Ahronot newspaper as having said. "Let me know if there is anything new."

For more than an hour, Mr Netanyahu and his aides closeted themselves in the Roosevelt Room on the first floor of the White House to map out a response to the president's demands.

Although the two men then met again, at 8.20 pm, for a brief second meeting, it appeared that they failed to break the impasse.

White House officials were quoted as saying that disagreements remained. Shimon Peres, the Israeli president, added: "Apparently they did not reach an understanding with the United States."

It was the second time this month that Mr Netanyahu has been at the receiving end of a US dinner-time snub.

A fortnight ago, Joe Biden the US vice president, arrived 90 minutes late for a dinner Mr Netanyahu hosted in Jerusalem after Israel announced plans to build 1,600 new homes in Eastern Jerusalem.

Rightardia comment: Israel has been a bigger impediment to peace in the middle east than Palestine.  Jimmy Carter pointed this out many years ago. The only way the US will get Netanyahu's attention is to cut economic and military aid to Israel.

Netanyahu is a hardliner and we were glad that the Obama administration played the visit down while the PM was in Washington. The J Street demonstrations were also essential to show the Israeli PM that he no longer has unwavering support form the American Jewish community (see http://jstreet.org/).

Of interest, the Netanyahu visit was not even mentioned on the White House blog.

Politics Daily: House Passes Final Health Care Bill 220 to 207

Posted: 03/24/10

The U.S. House of Representatives voted 220 to 207 on Thursday night to give final approval to the reconciliation portion of the health care reform bill, sending the measure to President Obama again for his signature.

The Senate passed the bill earlier Thursday 56 to 43.

Although Obama signed the main $871 billion health care reform bill into law Tuesday, the Senate still had to pass the package of "fixes" in the reconciliation bill. The changes were demanded by House Democrats in exchange for supporting the Senate version of health reform in a vote on Sunday afternoon.

Included in the reconciliation bill are billions of dollars in additional subsidies for middle-class Americans to purchase health insurance; a delay until 2018 for implementing the 40 percent excise tax on expensive insurance plans; reducing the states' share of expanding Medicaid rolls, and a major overhaul of the federal student loan program.

Now that both chambers have approved Democrats' top domestic priority, members will be able to go home for a two-week recess.

In the Senate, all Republicans and three Democrats -- Sens. Ben Nelson of Nebraska and both Arkansas senators, Mark Pryor and Blanche Lincoln -- voted against the reconciliation measure. Georgia Republican Johnny Isakson missed the vote due to illness.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid accidentally voted no, caught his mistake, and then gave the clerk a thumbs up to vote yes.

Vice President Joe Biden presided over the historic decision, which came nearly 24 hours after the Senate began a marathon voting session on the reconciliation portion of health reform. the Democrats dispensed with a string of Republican amendments one by one.

But the Senate parliamentarian, Alan Frumin, ruled in favor of Republicans on two objections to portions of the student loan reform section, a decision that changed the text of the reconciliation bill and thus required the House, which initially approved the measure, to vote again.

ZDNET: Ubuntu releases Lucid Lynx Beta1 10.04

Demo (ZDNet) from Off The Broiler on Vimeo.

Today Canonical released Beta 1 of Ubuntu Linux 10.04, the newest Long Term Support version of its popular Open Source operating system due for release on April 29th.

While largely an incremental release over the previous Karmic Koala 9.10, the desktop version of Ubuntu 10.04 features an updated 2.6.32 kernel, a revved 2.29 GNOME implementation (with KDE SC 4.4 for the Kubuntu variant) the Firefox 3.6 web browser and OpenOffice.org 3.2 for productivity.

Most notable in the newest desktop release is Ubuntu’s abandonment of its previous “Earth Tone” color scheme for GNOME in favor of a bright, Mac-like motif with fresh-looking icons and an Aubergine/Grey color pallete.

In an unusual decision and what could be considered an unwelcome change for the user interface, Canonical has also chosen the default configuration of the Metacity window manager to use a reverse positioning of the maximize/minimize icons on the upper left of each window.

This is a departure from the conventional Microsoft Windows-like positioning on the upper right of each window used in previous releases, which may take getting some used to by new Linux users. It certainly annoys this one and I hope Canonical considers returning to the previous default setting it had for release, although the company has said publicly that its design changes were not up for debate.

Rightardia agrees. People who are left handed will like this change, but most people who are right handed will find this change awkward.

[Update: see helpful comment from ZDNet talkbacker CPav on how to alter the default Window button positioning using the gconf-editor GUI tool.]

A number of new tools based on the Gwibber project for Social Media integration have been added or improved, including a microblogging program for Twitter and FaceBook, and a fully integrated instant messaging client, Empathy (which was introduced in Karmic Koala) which now includes support for FaceBook chat and numerous other IM networks.

Under the hood, in addition to the many performance enhancements of Kernel 2.6.32, 10.04 has removed the Hardware Abstraction Layer from the boot process, effectively making it twice as fast to boot than its predecessor and reducing resume from suspend time.

PCs with nVidia chips will now use the Open Source “Nouveau” driver by default as opposed to the proprietary nVidia driver, although the closed and higher-performance driver can also be installed using the Synaptic utility.

Rightardia comment:  We could not get the upgrade to work so we downloaded the .ISO image and right clicked on it to burn a DVD. We then backed up our files to a thumb drive. We used the Firefox XMarks add-on to backup our Firefox bookmarks. We also use the synchronize feature in Tomboy to backup Tomboy notes to the thumb drive.

When then blew away Linux 9.10 and installed the 10.04 Beta. The installation and restore worked perfectly. After getting the system up, we used Update manger to install 308 updates. After we finished the updates, three more updates appeared, but we didn't have to reboot to finish these updates.

Linux has always been a pleasure to update compared to Windows XP Pro. It is much faster and does not require multiple reboots like Windows.

American Enterprise Institute can't handle the truth

Former George W. Bush speech writer David Frum has resigned from the right-wing American Enterprise Institute. Frum announced this on his Web site Thursday afternoon -- a move which suggests the conservative movement has cut ties with Frum over the straight talk he has been providing all week.

Following the passage of health care reform in the House, Frum made waves with a column for CNN.com declaring that health care had proven to have been a "Waterloo" for the GOP, not for Obama as Sen. Jim DeMint (R-S.C.) infamously suggested. Republican lawmakers quickly dismissed Frum, a prominent reformist conservative, as a mere "former staffer."

Then Frum said on "Nightline" that the Republican Party's lockstep with the Fox News attack machine has hurt the party, and that "we're discovering we work for Fox." That may have been the last straw for AEI President Arthur Brooks.

"I have been a resident fellow at the American Enterprise Institute since 2003. At lunch today, AEI President Arthur Brooks and I came to a termination of that relationship," Frum wrote on his Web site.

Frum is the latest moderate conservative casualty. Some other notables who dared to tell the truth are Michael A. Smerconish and Christopher Buckley.

Harris Poll: "Wingnuts" and President Obama

A recent Harris Poll seeks to measure the bizarre views of many Americans. It finds that 40% of adults believe he is a socialist. More than 30% think he wants to take away Americans' right to own guns and that he is a Muslim.

The wing nut queen

More than 25% believe he wants to turn over the sovereignty of the United States to a world government, has done many things that are unconstitutional, that he resents America's heritage, and that he does what Wall Street tells him to do.

More than 20% believe he was not born in the United States, that he is "the domestic enemy the U.S. Constitution speaks of," that he is racist and anti-American, and that he "wants to use an economic collapse or terrorist attack as an excuse to take dictatorial powers."

Twenty per cent think he is "doing many of the things that Hitler did," while 14% believe "he may be the anti-Christ" and 13% think "he wants the terrorists to win."

These are some of the results of The Harris Poll of 2,320 adults surveyed online between March 1 and 8, 2010 by Harris Interactive.

The actual percentages of adults who believe these things are true are as follows:
  • He is a socialist (40%)
  • He wants to take away Americans' right to own guns (38%)
  • He is a Muslim (32%)
  • He wants to turn over the sovereignty of the United States to a one world government (29%)
  • He has done many things that are unconstitutional (29%)
  • He resents America's heritage (27%)
  • He does what Wall Street and the bankers tell him to do (27%)
  • He was not born in the United States and so is not eligible to be president (25%)
  • He is a domestic enemy that the U.S. Constitutions speaks of (25%)
  • He is a racist (23%)
  • He is anti-American (23%)
  • He wants to use an economic collapse or terrorist attack as an excuse to take dictatorial powers (23%)
  • He is doing many of the things that Hitler did (20%)
  • He may be the Anti-Christ (14%)
  • He wants the terrorists to win (13%)
What Republicans think

There are – no surprise here – huge differences between what Republicans and Democrats believe. Majorities of Republicans believe that President Obama:
  • Is a socialist (67%)
  • Wants to take away Americans' right to own guns (61%)
  • Is a Muslim (57%)
  • Wants to turn over the sovereignty of the United States to a one world government (51%); and
  • Has done many things that are unconstitutional (55%).
Also large numbers of Republicans also believe that President Obama:
  • Resents America's heritage (47%)
  • Does what Wall Street and the bankers tell him to do (40%)
  • Was not born in the United States and so is not eligible to be president (45%)
  • Is the "domestic enemy that the U.S. Constitution speaks of" (45%)
  • Is a racist (42%)
  • Want to use an economic collapse or terrorist attack as an excuse to take dictatorial powers (41%)
  • Is doing many of the things that Hitler did (38%).
Even more remarkable perhaps, fully 24% of Republicans believe that "he may be the Anti-Christ" and 22% believe "he wants the terrorists to win."

Differences by education

These replies are also strongly correlated with education. The less education people have had the more likely they are to believe all of these statements.

Consider these differences between those with no college education and those with post-graduate education respectively:
  • He is a socialist (45% and 20%)
  • He wants to take away Americans' right to own guns (45% and 19%)
  • He is a Muslim (43% and 9%)
  • He was not born in the United States so is not eligible to be president (32% and 7%)
  • He is a racist (28% and 9%)
  • He is anti-American (27% and 9%)
  • He is doing many of the things Hitler did (24% and 10%).
After reviewing these findings, John Avlon comments, "These new numbers are shocking but not surprising – they detail the extent to which Wingnuts are hijacking our politics.

This poll should be a wake-up call to all Americans about the real costs of using fear and hate to pump up hyper-partisanship. We are playing with dynamite by demonizing our president and dividing our country in the process. Americans need to remember the perspective that Wingnuts always forget – patriotism is more important than partisanship."

So what?

So what indeed! These responses recall a favorite saying of our founder Lou Harris that "when you don't want to publish a poll finding you dislike, you should get out of the business."

The very large numbers of people who believe all these things of President Obama help to explain the size and strength of the Tea Party Movement, a topic that will be addressed in another Harris Poll in a few days time.

Obama dares the GOP to try and repeal health care

President Barack Obama dared Republicans on to try to repeal his newly signed healthcare reform.  He warned that their effort would backfire as he touted the measure's benefits.

"If they want to have that fight, I welcome that fight," siad Obama.

"I don't believe the American people are going to put the insurance industry back in the driver's seat. We've been there already and we're not going back," he said.

Taking his public relations blitz on the road as he seeks to overcome public doubts, Obama visited the University of Iowa Field House in Iowa City.

"Well, I say go for it," Obama said, goading his critics. "If these congressmen in Washington want to come here to Iowa and tell small business owners that they plan to take away their tax credits and essentially raise their taxes, be my guest."

Rightardia agrees with the presidents view and appreciates his tenacity. We do not believe the public wants to hear any more about health care after the prolonged year long struggle. If the GOP wants to focus on their Waterloo, they will do so at their own peril.
