The Atheist Pig on creationism

A recent Gallup poll indicated that 46% of Americans believe in creationism.

Rightardia suggests that American parents are often indoctrinating their children with irrational beliefs about the world at an early age.

Is there any wonder why the US is behind other nations in science and mathematics?

The right wing in the US has become increasingly Christo-fascist. Preachers talk about Christian prosperity, a concept that is not evident in the Bible but is supportive of corporations and an affluent life style in conflict with the teachings of Jesus.

This theology is appealing to poorer Americans.

Mainstream evangelicalism has consistently rejected prosperity theology. Prosperity ministries have frequently come into conflict with other Christian groups, including those within the Pentecostal and Charismatic movements.

Critics argue that prosperity theology has little in common with traditional Christian theology.

How religion has retarded society

Uploaded by  on Sep 3, 2010

Neil deGrasse Tyson, an American astrophysicist and Director of the Hayden Planetarium, discusses how Islamic fundamentalist destroyed the enlightenment era of the Middle East and why we should be concerned today.roman
What Tyson is talking about also happened in Europe for a 1,000 years after the fall of the Roman Empire.
When the Moors invaded Spain 711, Spain was still in the dark ages and the Moors were hundreds of years ahead of the Spanish.
Then something regressive happened to Islamic culture. Tyson explains it well.
Could this happen in the US, too? You betcha.
As Barry Goldwater explained to The Advocate:
I don't have any respect for the Religious Right. There is no place in this country for practicing religion in politics. That goes for Falwell, Robertson and all the rest of these political preachers. They are a detriment to the country.

Dangerous Intersection: The conservative view of science

Berkeley cognitive linguist George Lakof pointed out:

Conservatives don’t dislike science or expertise inherently, Lakoff says–but for them, these are not the chief source of authority. Instead, conservatives have a moral system based on a “strict father” model of the family, which is then exported to various other realms of society–the market, the government. All are meant to be governed in a ruggedly individualistic, free-market way–where you either succeed or you don’t, based on your own mettle . . .

Scientific evidence “has a possible effect over the market, foreign policy, religion, all kinds of things,” Lakoff says. “So they can’t have that.”

Stephan Hawking on religion

What doe one of the smartest men in the world say about God?

Stephan Hawking told Diane Saywer:

"What could define God [is thinking of God] as the embodiment of the laws of nature. However, this is not what most people would think of that God,"

"They made a human-like being with whom one can have a personal relationship. When you look at the vast size of the universe and how insignificant an accidental human life is in it, that seems most impossible."

When Sawyer asked if there was a way to reconcile religion and science, Hawking said, "There is a fundamental difference between religion, which is based on authority, [and] science, which is based on observation and reason. Science will win because it works."

40 years ago Secular Human read a book called Science and Human Values by J. Bronowksi.  At that time scientists were still trying to resolve sceince and religion. It is Rightardia's view that this is a patent waste of time. Science has advanced tremendously since the 1960s with Lunar landings, the Mars Explorer, and the Hubble Space telescope  and others such as the Chandra. Many new humanoid fossil relatives have also been discovered.

Religion has remained static and immutable and the increase in Islamic and Judeo_Christian fundamentalism has widened the intellectual gap between science and religion.

We agree with Hawking: a human-like God that people could have a personal relationship with is a ludicrous concept. If an entity created the universe with the 'big bang, " it would not be remotely human. We have always been big fans of the Flying Sphetti Monster as the creator of the Universe.

Chinese Scientists make breakthrough in animal sex selection

June 25 (Xinhua) -- Chinese scientists have claimed a commercial breakthrough after breeding 10 piglets whose sex was successfully selected before conception, heralding potential higher profits for farmers.

The healthy piglets were born last week on an experimental farm belonging to the Animal Science Institute in south China's GuangxiZhuang Autonomous Region, the institute's top zoologist Lu Kehuan said Thursday.

"They were the first pigs in China bred from sperm sorted into male or female chromosomes," he said.

The piglets were born in two broods, an all-male brood of six last Thursday and an all-female brood of four last Saturday.

Prof. Lu and his team separated boar sperm with the female X chromosome from sperm with the male Y chromosome, and used artificial insemination techniques to transplant the separated sperm into four sows. "Two of them gave birth after 115 days and the other two are due to give birth soon."

Lu said the "custom-tailored" piglets were no different from other newborn pigs in terms of weight and appetite. But the technique is expected to help farmers manipulate birth rate and upgrade quality of animal species, he said.

Under normal circumstances, the average gender proportion of male and female piglets is 50:50. "On many pig farms in south China, a young boar is about 5,000 yuan (715 U.S. dollars) more expensive than a sow. An all-male brood of six therefore brings an additional 15,000 yuan compared with an ordinary three male, three female brood," said Prof. Lu.

Lu and his colleagues reported their first success in buffalo sex selection in 2006, when two female calves were born with X-bearing sperm.

The technology is widely used today on milch cows in north China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, whose vast pastures nurtures quality cows and milk.

Swine sperm, however, is more fragile and harder to survive compared with buffalo's, Lu said.

His team carried out several sex selection tests on pigs before, all of which failed either to impregnate the sows or get the desired gender in piglets.

"Theoretically, the same technique works on all mammals, including human beings," said Dr. Zeng Youquan, a member of Prof. Lu's project team. "But for legal and ethical reasons, we haven't considered applying it on human. Nor will we in the near future."

Choosing the sex of children is illegal in China, where people traditionally prefer boys over girls but most couples are allowed to have only one child. Hospitals are also banned from revealing the fetus gender to expectant mothers, fearing they might abort a female fetus.

Foetus sex selection, however, is applied occasionally to prevent serious hereditary diseases, such as haemophilia and thalassemia, which are more likely in boys than girls, said Dr. Zeng.
