What Tyson is talking about also happened in Europe for a 1,000 years after the fall of the Roman Empire.

When the Moors invaded Spain 711, Spain was still in the dark ages and the Moors were hundreds of years ahead of the Spanish. 

Then something regressive happened to Islamic culture. Tyson explains it well. 

Could this happen in the US, too? You betcha. 

As Barry Goldwater explained to The Advocate: 

I don't have any respect for the Religious Right. There is no place in this country for practicing religion in politics. That goes for Falwell, Robertson and all the rest of these political preachers. They are a detriment to the country.
