DEBKAfile: US, France, UK, Turkey, Italy prepare for military intervention in Syria

"Despite public denials, military preparations for intervention in the horrendous Syrian crisis are quietly afoot in Washington, Paris, Rome, London and Ankara. President Barack Obama is poised for a final decision after the Pentagon submits operational plans for protecting Syrian rebels and beleaguered populations from the brutal assaults of Bashar Assad’s army, DEBKAfile’s Washington sources disclose.

This process is also underway in allied capitals which joined the US in the Libyan operation that ended Muammar Qaddafi’s rule in August, 2011. They are waiting for a White House decision before going forward."

It will be interesting to see the Russian reaction if there is another NATO intervention. Russian warships are already in Syria and Russian Spetnaz (special forces) have been on alert for deployment to Syria.

Huge US airlift to Saudi Arabia is underway

DEBKAfile's military sources report that flight after flight of US warplanes and transports were to be seen in the sky above the Sinai heading to Gulf destinations,

DEBKAfile suggests the level of the airlift activity is unprecedented. The aircraft destinations are believed to be airfields in Saudi Arabia.

Haaretz Daily Newspaper | Israel News: Report: U.S. is anticipating an Israeli strike on Iran

"The United States has stepped up contingency planning in case Israel launches a military strike on Iran's nuclear facilities, the Wall Street Journal reported on Saturday.
According to the report, U.S. defense officials are becoming increasingly concerned that Israel is preparing to carry out such a strike."
DEBKAfile has also confirmed this report.

DEBKAfile: Israel planning a preemptive srike?

Israel's chief of staff Lt. Gen. Benny Gantz

In view of the US Carrier task force in the Straits of Hormuz, Israel's chief of staff Lt. Gen. Benny Gantz spoke of "the rising potential for a multi-arena event." He and other Israelis have been predicting a regional war. Gantz added that Israel is:

between terrorist organizations and Iran's progress toward a nuclear weapon… we can't afford to stay on the defensive and must come up with offensive measures.

DEBKAfile: Middle East is set for war

DEBKAfile reports indications that the Middle East is set for war,

An Israli attack on Iran is likely between mid-December 2011 and mid-January 2012.

The UK Telegraph's senior military commentator, Con Coughlin, called the campaign of assassinations, cyber war and sabotage of recent weeks "the 21st century form of war."

However Debkafile doens't think any of this has deterred Iran. DEBKAfile also thinks the Russians helped the Iranians capture the RQ-170 drone.

Iran and other middle eastern counties are on a war posture. If Israel attacks Iran,  a regional war will break out.

With the instability in Egypt and Syria, it is not clear what role either country would have in a middle east war. If the Iranians and militias in Palestine and Lebanon are initially successful, it is probable that other Arab an Islamic counties would join the fray.

If Turkey were to commit its forces, Israel would between a rock and a hard place. Israel was incredibly stupid when it offended the Turks.

Debkafile: Iran wants to make a deal with Russia and China

 S-300PMU-1 air defense system.

DEBKAfile Exclusive Analysis December 11, 2011, 6:37 PM (GMT+02:00)

Iranian Revolutionary Guards commander Gen. Ali Jaafari wants advanced nuclear and missile technology, especially those with solid fuel, centrifuge technology for enriching uranium and the S-300PMU-1 air defense system.

In exchange, Iran will give Russian and Chinese enginners access to the US RQ-170 drone it captured.

Israel is negotiating furiously with Moscow to prevent the technology transfer, particularly for the S-300PMU-1 air defense system.

The S-300 can shoot down both stealth aircraft and cruise missiles. It could make an Israeli attack on Iranian facilities difficult, if not impossible.

According to Wikipedia, The S-300PMU-2 Favorit (DoD designation SA-20B), introduced in 1997, is an upgrade to the S-300PMU-1 with range extended once again to 195 km (121 mi) with the introduction of the 48N6E2 missile.

This system is apparently capable against not just short range ballistic missiles, but now also medium range tactical ballistic missiles.

It uses the 83M6E2 command and control system, consisting of the 54K6E2 command post vehicle and the 64N6E2 surveillance/detection radar. It employs the 30N6E2 fire control/illumination and guidance radar.

Like the S-300PMU-1, 12 TELs can be controlled, with any mix of 5P85SE2 self propelled and 5P85TE2 trailer launchers.
