WIN: Mittens crusin' for a bruisin' in a big labor state

Michiganders vote in a Republican primary in one week and candidate Mitt Romney has made the dividing issue organized labor.

Romney has spent the last week on the stump attacking labor and very specifically the United Auto Workers.

He accused his rival former Senator Rick Santorum, of being “unapologetic” in defending organized labor pointing specifically to votes Santorum took against right-to-work legislation.

Michigan has the fifth highest rate of union workers in the country with 17.5 percent of workers members of a labor organization.

Romney has been endorsed by Gov. Rick Snyder who has used emergency financial managers to dismantle union contracts in economically struggling municipalities and school districts.

Romeny also opoosed the Obama administration loans to GM and Chyrsler. Had both companies been forced into bankruptcy, labor contracts would have been voided.

Instead management and labor will able to renegotiate contracts that saved thousands of jobs.

Rightradia agrees with Newt Gingrich comment that if you cannot win your home state, you are not a contender.

Father Santorum leads Romney 37% to 33% in the latest poll by Public Policy Polling (PPP). The current polls released late Sunday and Mittens has chipped away at a 15 point lead that Father Rick has at the end of Febriary.

Of course, Mittens is outspending Simple Rick by nearly a three to one margin in Michigan:

Romney war chest : $3.2 million (Romney campaign--$1.2 million; Restore Our Future Super PAC --$2 million)
Santorum money bomb: $1.1 million (Santorum--$480,000; Red, White, and Blue Super PAC Fund--$655,000)

What if the federal government tried something like this?

In March Michigan Governor Rick Snyder signed into law a bill that would allow the state to appoint an “Emergency Financial Manager” (EFM) to essentially take over a city within the state when it is deemed that the city is in a state of “financial crisis.”

This state-appointed official has the power to void union contracts, remove elected officials, and can dissolve local authority completely, replacing it with the authority of the governor through the EFM.

The first city has fallen — Benton Harbor, Michigan. A few days ago, the powers of the local, elected government were dissolved, and elected officials were replaced by a state-appointed EFM, Joseph Harris.

Public workers are being forced into concessions on their unionizing rights.

WIN: UAW President says union and non-union workers are under attack

That booing sound is being made by a few hundred United Auto Workers as Michigan Governor Rick Snyder takes the stage at a Ford Focus assembly plant in Michigan on Thursday.

The workers, many wearing red in solidarity with Wisconsin public sector workers, are upset with a bill signed into law by Snyder that give state appointed emergency financial managers the power to void collective bargaining contracts.

Snyder signed the bill in Lansing on Wednesday as thousands of Michiganders gathered outside to protest. At the rally was UAW President Bob King. He said the attacks are across the board – union and non-union:

Snyder: This is the kind of community you believe in and I believe in. It's people who care about one another, people who know we are our sisters and brothers keepers. SO I want to thank all of you for caring about the community good. And let me clear, this is one day in a long battle. We're going to be in this battle until 2012 and possibly beyond.

WIN Deja Vu: Thousands Of Workers And Their Supporters Send Republicans a Message In Michigan

Thousands of workers and their supporters sent a message to the Republican government of Michigan Wednesday. Jesse Russell reports.

Thousands descended on the Capitol of Michigan Wednesday to express their concerns over legislation that would grant the state the power to appoint “emergency financial managers” who could strip teachers and workers of collective bargaining rights. The taxpayers are also concerned about a budget that provides $1.8 billion in tax cut to business while making up for those cuts on the backs of low income workers.

Michigan Nurses Association President Jeff Breslin:

[Breslin]: It’s a personal insult to nurses and everybody here to watch as our state government deliberately and maliciously proposes laws that leave deep bleeding cuts in our patients, our families, and our communities lives.

Gerry Alpizar is a small business owner from Traverse City, Michigan and he wanted to know where his tax break was.

[Alpizar]: I count myself among you, because I don’t get tax breaks. If I don’t make money I don’t get a bailout. This trickle down crap is over.

State Senator Coleman Young, Jr., son of Detroit’s first African-American, told the crowd that it was time to draw a line in the stand.

[Young, Jr.]: We must rise with one voice and say you will not take our rights, you will not take our liberties, and we will not let this stand. Give us liberty or give us death!

Hysterical Raisins: Another radical Republican governor in Michigan

How about a nice cup of class warfare?

When Republicans prevailed in Michigan last year, they were supposed to put an end to tax increases.

Well, that lasted until Gov. Rick Snyder came up with his budget that taxes pensions , eliminates the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) for low-income working folks and freezes the income tax at 4.25 percent instead of gradually rolling it back to 3.9 percent.
