Hostess Execs Pump Up Their Pay Prior To Bankruptcy Filing

4/5/2012

By Doug Cunningham

The Teamsters union is expressing outrage over news that executives at Hostess Brands may have manipulated their pay, lining their pockets ahead of a bankruptcy filing while demanding workers’ pay be slashed.

The Wall Street Journal reported that unsecured creditors want an investigation into executive pay that skyrocketed in an apparent effort to dodge the bankruptcy code’s compensation requirements.

Ken Hall, general Secretary-Treasurer of the Teamsters, says that story “suggests that management broke the law, looted the company and then told workers to suck it up and sacrifice.”

WIN: Red Cross workers strike

This is what the Red Cross does to strikers.
By Doug Cunningham
Red Cross workers in Lansing Michigan have joined striking Red Cross workers in Toledo and Cleveland, Ohio. The workers represented by the Teamsters and by OPEIU are striking over understaffing, health care cuts and blood safety issues. Mike Parker, Teamsters Local 580, Said:

They wanna be able to give us whatever insurance package is out there. Say for this month say the person is paying $300 a month. They wanna be able to raise it next month to $500 or whatever. I think they’ve lost their focus on what their true mission is. They’ve turned into a for-profit corporation.

The Teamsters say the 150 Michigan Red Cross workers who went on strike March 30th are part of an escalating, widespread employee unrest at Red Cross.

The unions say Red Cross has been fined $40 million by the federal Food and Drug Administration for blood handling violations. Teamsters President Jim Hoffa says when dedicated Red Cross workers “call out for a safer process that protects the public, the workers and the blood supply, they deserve respect and consideration.”

Rightardia has heard many awful things about the Red Cross over the years and doesn't consider it a charity. We hope the strikers prevail.

Workers Independent News: Teamsters In Philly Go On Strike At The Red Cross

12/04/09

Submitted by Doug Cunningham

Teamsters in Philadelphia went on strike Thursday to protest standards at Red Cross facilities. Jesse Russell reports:

Just weeks after a transit strike that brought the city of Brotherly Love to a standstill Philadelphia is bearing witness to a new strike.
Thursday morning Red Cross workers represented by the Teamsters walked off the job to protest unfair labor practices and working conditions at blood service facilities. The strike comes in response to a report by Jobs with Justice that highlighted situations in that could endanger donors and employees alike.
According to the report cutbacks in pay has led to a high turnover rate that has resulted in less experienced workers handling patients. Workers are also allegedly expected to work long hours that can lead to fatigue. The Red Cross has been hit with $21 million dollars in fines by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration due to issues of blood safety.
Rightardia comment:  Over the years we have heard a lot of stories about the American Red Cross. We will put it this way: it is not a charity that Rightardia would ever support.
