Russia Today gives Boeing 787 Dreamliner high marks

"RT gets on board the new super-efficient Boeing 787 Dreamliner as the plane takes a tour of the Russian skies.

Engineers say the Dreamliner is around 20 per cent lighter, 20 per cent more fuel efficient, and faster than other aircraft in its class.
The new plane’s basic structural element is carbon fiber held together with an epoxy matrix, giving it a a higher strength-to-weight ratio than traditional aircraft materials."

St. Petersburg Times now called Tampa Bay Times

The wonderful St. Petersburg times is now called the Tampa Bay Times. The Times is one of the best newspapers in the southeast and we greatly appreciate the ability to post some of their articles and editorials.

The only other news entities we are aware of that allows the complete news article to be posted are Ria Novosti and Russia Today.

Of course, many media such as Al Jazeera allow Blogger to post links which we embellish with copy and a picture or a video.

Occupiers interrupt Obama speech

The 99 percent approached President Barack Obama this afternoon, surprising the commander in chief with a “mic check” during a speech he was making in New Hampshire.

Speaking from Manchester, NH Tuesday to discuss the American economy, President Obama was interrupted by protesters employing the “People’s Microphone,” a method of spreading news and alerts made popular by the Occupy Wall Street movement after demonstrators were denied usage of megaphones.

“Mic check,” a lone voice yelled during the president’s speech, which prompted a boisterous echo from other protesters in the crowd. A series of call-and-response quips ensued, overwhelming the president and causing him to momentarily stop his speech.

Though the chants were cut short due to a roar of cheers and jeers, the attempted message in full has made its way to the Web:

Mr. President: Over 4,000 peaceful protesters have been arrested while banksters continue to destroy the economy,”protesters proclaimed.

You must stop the assault on our First Amendment rights. Your silence sends a message that police brutality is acceptable. Banks got bailed out. We got sold out.

“We’ll be talking about a whole range of things today and I appreciate you guys making your point,”responded Obama. “Let me go ahead and make mine, alright? And I’ll listen to you and you listen to me.

The president added to the crowd, “You’re the reason that I ran for office in the first place.”

Protesters aligned with the Occupy Wall Street movement have conducted impromptu mic checks at other large events and political rallies in the two months-plus since the demonstrations began.

Republican presidential hopeful Ron Paul was surprised by one himself during a recent speech, to which he responded,  Paul added:

If you listen carefully, I’m very much involved with the 99. I’ve been condemning that one percent because they've been ripping us off.

We need to sort that out, but the people on Wall Street got the bail outs and you guys got stuck with the bills,”added Paul.“I think that’s where the problem is.

RT: China is building its first aircraft carrier

Chinese Shi Lang aircraft carrier
A senior Chinese general has for the first time officially confirmed that the country is building an aircraft carrier.
According to experts and media reports, the vessel is the half-built Soviet warship Varyag, which China bought and is completing.
The ship is not ready yet, Colonel General Chen Bingde, head of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) general staff said in an interview with Hong Kong Commercial Daily.

His aide Lieutenant General Qi Jianguo said the ship, when it is ready, will serve as a floating training camp for Navy pilots. It will not be sent on missions to territorial waters of other countries “unlike some other nations do,” the general said.

While not officially confirmed, defense experts believe that the aircraft carrier is the multi-role Soviet Varyag.
The ship was about 60-70 per cent complete when funding stopped in 1992 after the USSR collapsed.

Ukraine, which took ownership, auctioned the vessel in the late 1990s, with the Chinese offering the highest bid of $20 million.

It was believed that Varyag would be examined by military engineers to copy technology and later sold to a private company to be used as an entertainment facility.
This was what happened to two other Soviet aircraft carriers Kiev and Minsk, which China bought too.

However, PLA chose to complete the carrier for its Navy.
In April 2011, Chinese media published unofficial photos and cited unnamed sources as saying that the ship is almost ready for sea trials. Reportedly renamed Shi Lang, the ex-Varyag is docked at the Dalian shipyard in Liaoning province, Northeast China.
In a related story, the Russians are accusing  China of making clones of Russia's military hardware. China's J-15 naval fighter jet allegedly has remarkable similarities to Russia's current primary navy aircraft, the Su-33.
Chinese J-15 naval fighter jet
Chinese engineers may have reverse engineered a Soviet-era prototype T10K they bought from Ukraine four years ago, according to Hong-Kong-based magazine, Kanwa Asian Defence.

RT: Siberian "dead alien" is a fake

A video of what was claimed to be a mutilated alien corpse, which scored hundreds of thousands of views on YouTube, has turned out to be fake.

The tiny “dead alien” is just skin from chicken filled with bread, reports the website 7d.org.ua. Police questioned the men who claimed to have found the “body” and they allegedly confessed to creating it themselves.

The chief editor of the local Kabansk-Info newspaper initially thought that it was the body of an infant in the video and alerted the police.

Officers immediately started the investigation and identified the alleged author.

They went to his house and asked him about the infant’s body.  The scared man reportedly showed a fake alien corpse.  It was even painted in “alien colors”.  Scolding is the only possible punishment for such a stunt as it cannot be considered a crime, the report says.

The footage was taken near the village of Kamensk in the Russian republic Buryatia, just north of Lake Baikal, the file’s description said.

It showed what appeared to be a humanoid body less than a meter high with a skeletal big-eyed head and thin naked body. One of its legs was missing.

Emotional off-screen comments said the body was found a couple of hours before and was clearly very dead.

Local media reported there were numerous reports of UFO sightings in the area in March, some of them later attributed to bombing training at a nearby military range.

The video was uploaded on YouTube on April 14. Three days later it was translated into English and its popularity skyrocketed in the following days. It beat the one million benchmark on Tuesday.

Ria Novosti: Russian arms exporter denies MiG-31 fighter contract with Syria

13:42 27/10/2010

LE BOURGET, October 27 (RIA Novosti) Russia does not have a contract to supply MiG-31 Foxhound fighter jets to Syria, the head of the Russian state-run arms exporter Rosoboronexport said on Wednesday.

Media rumors about the sales of at least six MiG-31 aircraft to Damascus under a 2007 contract sparked criticism in the West and Israel, which consider arming Syria a threat to regional security.

"The existence of a contract on the delivery of MiG-31 interceptors to Syria is a journalistic hoax," Rosoboronexport General Director Anatoly Isaykin told reporters at the Euronaval 2010 exhibition in Paris.

The MiG-31 Foxhound is a two-seater supersonic interceptor aircraft developed to replace the MiG-25 Foxbat. It is equipped with two D-30F6 turbofan two-shaft engines with a common afterburner and a variable supersonic nozzle, which allow the aircraft to fly at supersonic speeds of up to Mach 2.83.

The interceptor also features unique air-to-air missiles capable of hitting targets at ranges exceeding 200 kilometers (125 miles), including aircraft with stealth capabilities, cruise missiles, and supersonic aircraft.

Meanwhile, Israel has signed a contract with the United States in the past month to buy 20 advanced F-35 fighter jets after Washington offered "incentives" for the Jewish state to help sputtering peace talks.

The sale of the US-made Joint Strike Fighter will arm Israel with a more sophisticated combat aircraft than any nation in the Middle East, amid rising tensions with Iran and after a major US arms sale to Saudi Arabia. So far little progress has been made in the Israel-Palestine peace talks.

Russia to dramitically increase froegn imports.

Published 15 June, 2010, 21:19 Edited 09 September, 2010, 20:34

Experts at a Moscow-based research institute predict Russians will see two €1.5 billion deals within the next couple of years.

The first will be a purchase of 4 Mistral-class warships, which are primarily helicopter carriers, from France. Prime Minister Putin negotiated the possible terms during his recent visit to the country.
The second deal will be 3,000 light-armoured LMV vehicles from an Italian firm, Iveco. They are used in hot spots to protect infantry from gunfire and bombs.

Other contracts are thought to be in the pipeline for the next 5 or 6 years, including a purchase of Israel air-space industry models of unmanned aircraft and a deal with another French firm for thermal imaging equipment, which in total will cost €10 billion.

Traditionally, Russia has been an exporter than rather an importer of weapons: currently the country is the second largest exporter of weapons in the world, covering 23% of the market. As for imports of arms, between 2005 and 2009, Russia was ranked as 80th in the world.

The reason for such change in tactics is an absence of its own technologies that would enable Russia to build the Mistral-class warships or, for example, complex military electronics. It will take years to develop such technologies, so Russian authorities decided to purchase it and, at the same time, maintain the high level of exports.

“This is absolutely normal,” Puslan Pukhov from the Centre for Analysis of Strategies and Technologies told RT.

After the end of the Cold War, all the countries of the world are not only exporting the weapons, but also importing them – like the US. There is no single country which is capable of producing good equipment for itself. Sometimes other countries produce excellent equipment and it is much cheaper to buy it than to develop it.

All this is part of a broader plan by President Medvedev to upgrade 30% of the country’s arms by 2015.

RT: Medvedev seeks hi-tech partnership in China

September 27, 2010 21:16:12 September 27, 2010 17:16:12

Chinese President Hu Jintao (R) gestures the way forward for visiting Dmitry Medvedev (L) during a welcoming ceremony at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing on September 27, 2010.

Russian oil will be pumped to China by next year. President Dmitry Medvedev have taken part in the opening of the new pipeline from Russia while visiting China.

Meeting for the fifth time this year, the presidents of Russia and China both stressed the strategic importance of their alliance.

Russia and China are committed to strategic partnership concerning all issues. It helps out countries to adjust to a constantly changing geopolitical situation. We have good co-ordination concerning the international agenda and regional issues,” announced the Russian president during his visit to China.

But the two giant countries also want to boost trade and security in the region.

With two thirds of the cabinet traveling with the Presidents, the Russian delegation in China proved among the largest in recent years, and they all did their homework.

The leaders have signed 10 agreements, most of them dealing with energy co-operation in the region.

Russia will build two more nuclear reactors in China in addition to another two completed in 2007.

The leaders also signed a broad political declaration in which they pledged continuing support for each other on the international arena. They also called on the creation of what they called a new democratic world order, based on equality for all and same rules for all, denying the hegemony of one country or a group of countries, with an apparent reference to the US.

Also, presidents have attended a completion ceremony for the Chinese section of the first oil pipeline to link the two neighbors. The talks to build this pipeline began 15 years ago but the construction began only in 2009. The pipeline will be finished around November and the first oil is expected to flow by the end of this year.

About 400,000 barrels of Russian crude oil crosses the border with China each day. This quantity is expected to triple once the pipeline reaches full capacity.

It is a remarkable occasion for both countries, because when the pipeline reaches its full capacity, which is expected in 2011, it will increase the quantity of crude oil sold to China threefold. This means China will get its hands on more hydrocarbons, so badly needed, and for Russia it means diversifying its oil supply away from the European markets.

The relationship between Russia and China could hardly be better than today, both economically and politically. In 2009, China surpassed Germany for the first time as Russia’s largest trading partner.

Overall trade turnover between the two has reached US$40 billion and is expected to reach $50 billion in 2010.

Politically, the two countries are also doing well, and the leaders have stressed today they are ready to take this relationship to a new level.

Still, there are definitely sharp corners, such as weapons trade, for example. Back in the 1990s, China was the leading buyer of Russian weaponry. At one point China purchases accounted for 50 per cent of Russian weapons exports.

But over the last few years, Russia has intentionally scaled back on selling its weapons to China. The main reason for this is China using its technological and scientific progress to copycat Russian weapons and then sell them at dumping prices to third party ountries, seriously undercutting Russia’s share of the world arms market.

But despite some reservations, the two countries are keen to increase the turnover – but not at the expense of technological piracy.

Back in 1950s and 1960s, the Soviet Union did much to industrialize the People’s Republic of China, providing equipment and education for Chinese specialists. Now history has come full circle and it is China which is the most-industrialized country and modern economy in Asia and now it is Russia’s turn to benefit from co-operation with its eastern neighbor. On the wave of the modernization program currently underway in Russia, one of the Russian newspapers even called China “a country where modernization reigns.”

The Russian President has said on a number of occasions that he sees his main goal as a president in upgrading the Russian economy, both in terms of infrastructure and technology. Obviously, China has a lot to offer to Russia in this respect.

In the recent decade China made a breakthrough in high technology and co-operation in this field is mutually beneficial for our countries. Nowadays we both have some ideas and experience to show to each other, so we have great perspective in the high-tech [sector],” commented Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.

President Medvedev plans to visit a trade expo in Shanghai on the third day of his visit to China, where he will meet with top Chinese businessmen and Chinese officials trying to take the Russian-Chinese partnership to a level beyond the traditional energy sphere.

Russia needs political stability, predictable economic policy and peaceful foreign policy to achieve good results in modernization of its economy, believes Dr Evgeny Bazhanov, vice-rector of the Diplomatic Academy of Russia's Foreign Ministry.

As good as relations may be, some say the invisible presence of the US is still tangible, so Russia and China want to work together with the US on many issues, including security and counter-terrorism. “The purpose of the two countries is not to work against the US, but together with the US,” he said.

The Russians have been very impressed with Chinese economic gains. The Russians have a mixed economy that has elements of both socialism and capitalism. The Chinese government is communist but it also uses a mixed economic model.

Russian trade with the US is limited because of the Jackson -Vanik amendment which is a relic of the Cold War.

New Russian Knight (Vityaz) machine gun

The PP-19-01 "Vityaz" is a recent development of the Izhevsk Mechanical Plant (IZHMASH); this weapon evolved from relatively unsuccessful PP-19 "Bizon" submachine gun and was requested by the elite Russian law enforcement team "Vytyaz" (SWAT-type formation).

The PP-19-01 is based on the AKS-74U compact assault rifle, with simple blowback action, although "Vityaz" (Knight in Russian) uses more conventional box magazines and fires more powerful 9x19 ammunition which is now standard in Russia.

As of mid-2007, PP-19-01 is in limited production in Izhevsk and is already in use by some specialized SWAT-type teams of Russian police and other law enforcement agencies.

The PP-19-01 "Vityaz" can also fire Russian issue 7N21 armor piercing ammunition.

The PP-19-01 "Vityaz" is based on AKS-74U compact assault rifle and shares about 70% of parts with the parent weapon. The gun is fired from closed bolt, ultilising standard AK-type trigger and safety / fire selector subsytems.

A special magazine housing is attached below the receiver, which accepts proprietary double-stack magazines, made from polymer. Two magazines can be clipped together using a special steel clip for faster reloading.

The PP-19-01 uses AKS-74U-style side-folding skeletonized butt and a tangent-type adjustable rear sight. Left side of receiver is fitted with Russian-standard side rail that will accept quick-detachable scope mounts with various sighting equipment.

A modifiied version of PP-19-01 (Vityaz-SN) is available with additional Picatinny style acessory rails, left-side charging handle and additional safety lever on the left side of receiver.

NASA want Soviet-era engines for Taurus II space launcher

A major U.S. rocket manufacturer says it may buy Russian engines for the launch vehicle Taurus Two being developed for NASA. Aerojet is in talks over the possible deal after successful lengthy tests of the Russian NK-33 engine.

The company bought the same model in the mid-90's and this time might need up to 70. The rocket engine is produced in Central Russia's Samara region and was first developed 40 years ago.

Russia Today: Russian Geophysica to take passengers into outer space

Published 03 February, 2010, 09:40

The Russian-made “Geophysica” was designed to be the highest flying plane in the world, able to reach an altitude of 21 kilometers, and for ten years served as a laboratory studying the upper levels of the atmosphere.

Now its developers have a whole new mission in store:

“Our goal is to send large groups of people to around 100 kilometers above ground where they will be able to see our planet and space with their own eyes,” says chief specialist Stanislav Smirnov from the aircraft constructing center in Zhukovsky in the Moscow region.

In order to achieve this goal, the developers want to use the Geophysica's ability to carry cargo attached to its body. The plane will take off carrying a small space shuttle which will be released at a certain altitude.

The Geophysica will then head back to earth, while the shuttle will transport tourists to orbit and back.

“After detaching from the plane, a rocket engine pushes the shuttle into close orbit. After spending several minutes at its highest altitude, it descends and lands at an airport,” explains chief designer Aleksandr Bruk.

The developers say they need around $200 million to put the shuttle into production. And the ticket price for passengers will be around $200,000. Already the list of people wanting to make the trip is growing.

A bigger, 14-seater version of the shuttle is also being designed. It can be carried by another plane – the Atlant, which transported the Buran, the only Soviet space shuttle in history.

It is planned that the three-seater spacecraft's crew will consist of a pilot, who will sit in front, and two passengers in the back. They will not need to go through any intense physical training with the only major test being a health check.

The whole flight from take-off to landing will take around one hour. And for five whole minutes the crew will be able see what the Earth looks like from space in zero gravity.

Rightardia comment: We saw this aircraft in action on the Discovery channel. Apprently the thunderstorms in Darwin, Australia are getting worse and the Australian government commissioned a study to study the unusual t-storms.

The Geophysicia was the only aircraft that could fly high enough to check the anvil that forms on the top of a t-storms. This aircraft has flown as high as 21360 m which is more than 13 miles high or nearly 70,000 feet.

It is the modern Russian equivalent of the U-2.

Russia Today: Scientologists are rushing to Haiti

February 02, 2010
|
Russia Today interviews the editor of Gawker.

Our Scientology sources tell us there's an interesting reason that some members of the church are swarming into Haiti. The Scientologists are taking up landing time slots, which is holding up doctors that are trying to get into the country to provide medical assistance for the citizens of Haiti. Many of the Haitians are very spiritual and are asking the Scientologists to leave them alone.

Of course, there is a Scientology headquarters in Clearwater, FL. Rightardia suspect most of the volunteers are coming from Florida.

We wonder if they are bringing E-meters to clear the island of evil spirits. Pat Robertson would probably approve if they were.
