The Kahn Academy: A great way to learn math

Uploaded by  on Oct 21, 2010

Salman Khan is a math whiz who used to work for a hedge fund and decided to do something socially useful.

He now is the single faculty member of the Khan Academy, a non-profit, which teaches basic to very complex topography math.

Bill Gates talks about the Khan Academy on the Gates Notes. His children use the Kahn academy for help with math.

One of the children of a Rightrdia writer, who was struggling with math, told his father about the Khan academy.
So now you know about the Khan Academy, too.

Bill Gates: "The rich should bear a larger increase than the rest"

Bill Gates said:

There is no strong correlation between job creation and what the tax environment has been at any point in time.

If something’s a profitable activity, you’re going to engage in it. Yes, there are tax rates that are so high that people may work less. But that’s — you have to get up in the 50, 60 percent range before that’s the case.

Jerusalem Post: Pollard's lawyers file clemency request with Obama

By GIL HOFFMAN  10/17/2010 00:56

Jonathan Pollard’s American attorneys, Eliot Lauer and Jacques Semmelman, filed a new petition for clemency on Friday, asking that US President Barack Obama commute Pollard’s life sentence to the 25 years he has already served,

The Jerusalem Post has learned ht the petition comes amid a wave of calls for the release of the Israeli agent and following new revelations of apparent government malfeasance made public by senior officials with first-hand involvement in the case. This was former minister Rafi Eitan and former US assistant secretary of defense Lawrence J. Korb.

No, OMG, no!

Eitan, who was Pollard’s handler, revealed on Thursday after press time that the US had violated an oral agreement with Israel to release Pollard after 10 years. In an interview with Israel Radio, Eitan also accused the US of deliberately perpetrating a travesty of justice by violating Pollard’s plea agreement and slapping him with what he called a grossly disproportionate life sentence.

He pointed out that at the time of Pollard’s sentencing in 1987, secret charges were laid against Pollard blaming him for the crimes of a Russian mole within American intelligence, Aldrich Ames. Pollard was neither informed of these charges nor given a chance to challenge them in a court of law.

Pollard was an unrepentant espionage agent. The Us let his wife, who was involved with the conspiracy, emigrate to Israel. Once she got there she tried to make her husband out as a martyr. Israel tried to spring Pollard out of jail when Bush was prez, and several cabinet level people including SECDEF Bill Gates said they would resign if Bush freed Pollard.

Pollards freedom is hardly worth a temporary building freeze in Israel, but perhaps for a permanent peace treaty between Palestine and Israel. Rightardia believes that would be impossible while the Likud government of Benjamin "Bibi" Netanyahu is in power.

Bill Gates: US curbs on talent a mistake

by Wirehead and The Major

Rightardia comment: Microsoft has been notorious for underpaying workers and would offer stock incentives to employees as an alternative. In Redmond, one in three workers is a temporary and until these workers sued, they weren't even eligible for Microsoft stock.

According to James McGuire American IT workers take a dim view of increasing H-1B visas. Not surprisingly, their stance is: hire more American workers. The Programmers Guild claims that bringing in more foreign workers will enable U.S. companies to pay $25,000 less than to equivalent American professionals.

Is there really a shortage of US IT workers? There is little hard data to support this conclusion. There are shortages of skilled workers in California and and some states in the Mid-West. IT unemployment is low compared to other career fields. But private industry also has ways to increase the pipeline of IT workers by offering scholarships and working with local colleges and universities to produce more IT graduates.

In addition, many IT students go for technical certifications rather than going through the long ordeal of getting a college degree. Many students can get Comptia, Microsoft and Cisco certifications in less than six months.

Meanwhile, employers have to raise salaries, bonuses and benefits to keep the IT workers they have. It is easy to understand why corporations would like to hire more workers form India who will accept smaller salaries.

Is this really good for a developing country to send its 'smart people' to work in the US? One of the problems in India has been a lack of doctors. A village would save up money to send a bright young person to the US to become a doctor so he or she could come back to the village to care for the people there. All too often, the young man or woman would stay in the US and never return to help the villagers.

There are also cultural issues. The standard myth is the US is this great 'melting pot' in which all the nationalities get along and sing 'Kumbayah.' The reality is there are still big ethnic and racial tensions in the US. Rather than a melting pot, most major US cities have a series of ethnic neighbourhoods that have been around since the 1900s.

Does bringing in workers to the US that have significant ethnic and religious differences with the general population really benefit the country in the long run? Are we really just creating a another ethnic ghetto?

NEW DELHI: Microsoft founder Bill Gates said it would be a "big mistake" if the US imposes curbs on the entry of skilled workers from abroad, putting his weight behind "smart people" from countries like India who want to work overseas.

"I can't make any predictions. Immigration policy could get more difficult. Microsoft as a company is very vocal. It would be a big mistake," Gates, here for overseeing the philanthropic activities of his foundation, said in an interaction with India Inc.

"The US Congress is very tough on immigration. But why not make an exception for smart people?" said Gates while addressing an interactive session organised by the National Association of Software and Service Companies (Nasscom).

Even though Gates now devotes most of his time to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, he has always been vocal about his support for migrant professionals that is reflected in the number of such workers at the Microsoft offices in the US.

Gates said he was also keen to partner India in its ambitious plan to issue a single identity card and number to its 1.17 billion citizens for which a new authority has been formed under Infosys Technologies co-founder Nandan Nilekani.

"Microsoft wants to be part of the Unique Identification Authority of India project," he said, adding that he hoped to meet with Nilekani to discuss the issue.

Bill Gates receives the Indira Gandhi Prize for Peace, Disarmament and Development

NEW DELHI: Calling Microsoft founder Bill Gates a "unique business leader" and an "inspiration", Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Saturday appealed to corporate leaders to help banish poverty, improve and promote education.

'The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation' is an inspiration to business leaders around the world. Many business leaders in India too have been inspired by its example and their work and come forward to join the battle against poverty, ignorance and disease," Manmohan Singh said. The event conferred the Indira Gandhi Prize for Peace, Disarmament and Development on the Gates foundation.
Singh said:
But I very much hope that many more Indians who can -- more of our business leaders and our wealthy -- will learn to share their wealth with the people of their country, by investing in their education, their health, and the care of the elderly and the disabled.

Going through the list of the 23 recipients of this prize, I realised that Bill Gates is the first business leader to receive this award. We have so far honoured people in public life, political leaders, scientists and social activists. It is appropriate, I think, that Mr Gates is the first business leader to receive this prestigious award. In this, as in so much else, he breaks new ground.

Bill Gates received the award from President Pratibha Patil on behalf of the foundation.Patil stated:

The work of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is based on the principle that every human life has equal worth -- that the life of a poor child in a developing country is as precious as the life of a middle-class child in a developed country.

The foundation, through its India initiative Avahan, has worked for targeted interventions in six states affected most by AIDS.

Under our third National Aids Control Programme, the National Aids Control Organisation has worked closely with the foundation while developing key strategic interventions and formulating programme guidelines. It is a shining example of partnership between government and civil society in a critically important sector. I commend their work.

The ancient Greeks said that all dreams pass through the gates of horn and ivory, but the gates of Bill and Melinda make the dreams of millions real. I compliment Bill and Melinda Gates.
