TBO.com: U.S. Senate rivals fire at each other over a misleading ad

Senator Bill Nelson asks news media to pull misleading ad

TAMPA --As Florida's U.S. Senate race begins to come out of the shadow of the presidential battle and draws more attention, sniping among the top three contenders –— Democratic incumbent Sen. Bill Nelson and GOP primary opponents George LeMieux and Rep. Connie Mack IV — is increasing. Monday, it hit fever pitch:

Senator Bill Nelson said this about the Chamber ad this in a recent email:

There’s a new TV ad that began airing in Florida this week claiming I don’t support Medicare – which, of course, is not true.

If you see this ad, which is urging folks to call my Senate office, don’t believe it.

According to independent fact-checkers, including PolitiFact, "The [health-care] law does not take $500 billion out of the current Medicare budget. Rather, it attempts to slow the program’s future growth ... ."

Not only does the law not slash Medicare, it actually provides prescription drug discounts for lots of seniors and tax credits for many small businesses – not to mention the law bars insurers from excluding people based on pre-existing conditions.

Regardless of how you may feel about health-care reform, know this: I always have fought to protect Medicare. And, I always will.
