Why the GOP makes a big deal about gays and lesbians in the Armed Services.

First of all, gays and lesbians have been in the Armed Services for a long time. Our editor, The Major,  was aware of many gay people when he served. A lot of people in uniform knew who was straight and who wasn't, but really didn't care.

The problem was that some evangelical and fundamentalists did care and a complaint to the Office of Special Investigation (OSI) could end a promising career.

The Armed Services attract conservatives. Most of the soldiers, sailors, marines and airmen are from the South and Midwest. The navy is an exception. Many sailors  are from the east coast and left coast  probably because they young men and women live near the Atlantic and the Pacific.

However, gays and lesbians often hold more liberal views than their peers in the Armed Services. Perhaps the Republicans worry that the Armed Services will become more liberal and Democratic if gays serve freely.

Besides religious prejudices toward homosexuality, that's the best Rigthtardia can come up for the homophobia on the part of the GOP. The three candidates that are making the most noise about gays and lesbians are Rick Perry, Rick Santorum and Michele Bachmann,

All three GOP candidates who are evangelical and all three have made some peculiar statements about gays and lesbians.

Funny or Die, Betty Bowers and the National Lampoon all parodied the Strong commercial of Rick Perry.

Michelle Bachmann advocates "lavender marriages" for gays and lesbians. In Hollywood, a gay and a lesbian would sometimes marry to hide their true sexuality from the public.

These sham marriages were called lavender marriages. Michelle said is was OK for gays and lesbians to get married as long as they married the opposite sex.

Rick Santorum somehow relates strengthening the family with economic recovery. He thinks prohibiting same sex marriage will somehow help the economy. Santorum said:

The family is the bedrock of our society. Unless we protect it with the institution of marriage, our country will fall.

Huh?
