Muck Rock submitted an Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) Request to the FBI about whether it was using data from the Carrier IQ rootkit.
The FBI stated it did have documents that were exempt under a provision that covers materials that, if disclosed, might reasonably interfere with an ongoing investigation.
Rightardia was convinced form the beginning that the Carrier IQ rootkit was about government surveillance of cell phones.
This technology was brought to you by the courtesy of the Patriot Act.

Apparently Carrier IQ is saying there is a "bug" in the software that would allow its software to be used as a keylogger. A keylogger is dangerous malware that hackers, corporations and private detectives use to record every keystroke on a device like a PC.
Imagine a keylogger on a cell phone. it would completely breach a user's privacy and also use a lot of resources of the phone.
The government and IQ Carrier are falling allover themselves denying what the true purpose of this pernicious software is.
