Capital Soup: Florida legislature passes conservative family values acts on abortion

TALLAHASSEE, FL – Senate Majority Leader Andy Gardiner, R-Orlando, made this statement on pro-life bills, House Bill 1127 and House Bill 1247, passing in the Florida Senate:
I want to thank Senators Hays and Storms for helping to champion pro-life efforts this session. Their bills, along with measures passed last week, will help give the lives of unborn children the dignity they deserve.
Notifying a parent of any minor’s medical procedure is the right thing to do, especially when it’s as life-changing as an abortion. There are circumstances when, for the minor’s protection, this is not appropriate, and Senator Hays’ bill provides protection for those situations.
Some argued today that ultrasounds are not medically necessary for mothers considering abortions. It is medically necessary if it helps in any way to protect the life of a child. We have the technology now to share the impact of what that life looks like, and we should not withhold the ability for a mother to witness a child. Regardless of how members feel about the pro-life issue, Senator Storms’ ultrasound bill helps families make informed decisions.
These are exactly the types of life-changing issues that, at the end of the day, are why we come to Tallahassee.
In these tough economic times, Rightardia doesn't understand why the GOP is wasting time on social legislation like this. The courts have ruled that minors have a right to privacy in reproductive matters. The GOP bill requires any woman considering an abortion to pay for her own ultrasound.

We suspect the new law that results from these bills will be challenged in court. If the state requires an ultrasound, the state should pay for it. Regardless, we think the state in intruding on the privacy of women.
