WIN: Biggest Attacks On Unions In 20 Years

3/24/2011

By Doug Cunningham

Workers, unions and their community allies are rallying in Los Angeles Saturday for jobs and community as they express solidarity with Wisconsin and other worker struggles around the country.

The Teamsters are meeting in Los Angeles for their national organizing conference. Teamsters President James Hoffa.

Hoffa: What we’re seeing here is the biggest attack on organized labor and the middle class that we’ve seen in the past twenty years. This is basically the right wing, the far-right-wing, the Tea Party. They’ve taken over six governorships and they are attacking labor across the board.

We are fighting back. And here in Los Angeles this Saturday we’re going to have a march of over 15,000 people to talk about that we’re not going backwards, were not giving up our union rights, we’re not going to give up our dreams for the middle class.

Hoffa says forging a long-term movement to take political power away from anti-union right-wingers is one goal of a re-energized workers movement. And he says people are in a fight-back mood.

Hoffa: People who are under attack – the thousands of people that showed up in Madison, Wisconsin, the thousands of people that are showing up across the country at these demonstrations , the thousands of people that are gonna show up here in Los Angeles – to basically say hey, we’re mad as hell.

We’re gonna fight back. We’re not gonna let you take away our lives, our dreams.

The Los Angeles labor rally this weekend will help build a national day of labor action April 4th – the anniversary of the 1968 assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as he stood in solidarity with public workers in Memphis.

Rightardia doesn't celebrate Labor Day.  The International Labor Day is May, 1 which is when Labor Day should really be celebrated.

Labor Day became a federal holiday in 1894, when, following the deaths of a number of workers at the hands of the U.S. military and U.S. Marshals during the Pullman Strike.

President Grover Cleveland put reconciliation with the labor movement as a top political priority.

Fearing further conflict, legislation making Labor Day a national holiday was rushed through Congress and signed into law a mere six days after the end of the strike.

Labor Day is a United States federal holiday observed on the first Monday in September . It was not a good day for labor and represent a set back for the labor movement in the US.
