Raising kids is expensive. It will cost a middle-class U.S. family about $222 K ($286,050 adjusted for inflation) to raise a child born in 2009 to the age 17.
This is according to the report Expenditures on Children by Families 2009, from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA).
The USDA even has a calculator that considers the region of the US that you live and overall family income. See http://www.cnpp.usda.gov/calculator.htm
From time to time Rightardia runs into dog people. Sometimes we see them at the beach with a baby stroller. We look into stroller expecting to see a human baby, but instead we see a dog. Does a dog person really think any self respecting dog wouldn't want to walk?
We suspect 'dog people" have a lot to do with the rise of dog beaches in Florida, too. These are the beeches where you can walk your dog and can anticipate some "doggy land mines." Most Florida beaches ban animals.
We sometimes see 'dog people' on home improvement shows. They are easy to spot. It's a single couple who lives in an expensive and beautiful home with two dogs and no kids. They want a $75,000 home improvement.
Admittedly, if you aren't spending more than $10,000 a year to raise a child, you have discretionary income and also a lot of discretionary time. Dog people are usually conservative and materialistic.
Raising kids make a couple into better people who have more compassion for others. Raising kids is tough and requires a lot of work.
People who have children consider most 'dog people " superficial. As 'dog people' age, they will have no children and grand children to share their lives with. Who will they leave their beautiful home to, the SPCA?
One of our writers was driving by a a large senior citizen complex and he noticed a bumper sticker that said "Ask me about my grand dog." Another stated "My dog is smarter than your child."
Clearly some 'dog people " have distorted "family values."
What is the latest trend for 'dog people.' They now want to be have their cremains buried in pet cemeteries. One woman in a St. Petersburg Times article wanted her ashes split between the pet cemeteries of two of her beloved pets.
Such is the fate of a 'dog person.'
