A spokesman for the Log Cabin Republicans, Slap Kretchner, complained to Walt Disney studios that the a character in Toy Story 3 wasn't gay. Kretchner stated:
For years Americans have known that Ken of Ken and Barby was gay. That is why they never married.
The character in Toy Story 3 is clearly a straight doll. This is an insult to the conservative Gay and Lesbian community. Kretchner accused Disney of homophobia and historical revisionism.
That's Ken as in Barbie's long-suffering boy friend. Thanks in large part to Micheal Keaton's vocal prowess and more wardrobe changes than a Lady Gaga concert, the dandified twit parlays his status as a D-list doll into an A-rated breakout performance in Toy Story 3.
When Keaton got the job offer, "the phone literally fell out of my hands and I almost fell to my knees laughing. I don't know why exactly, frankly. It just started to make me laugh, and I haven't quite stopped since."
On Feb. 12, 2004 Mattel (MAT) announced that Barbie and Ken, her companion of 43 years, were splitting up.
Many euphemisms were used: "They had grown apart." "Needed some time alone." "Were going their separate ways." "They would remain friends." "Ken needs some space."
The announcement was made just 48 hours before Valentine's Day. Immediately, the rumors started, and they were tantalizing: That a single Barbie, soon to be unleashed in her latest incarnation, Tatoo Barbie, would go over better.
That Barbie had really left Ken for Blaine -- a boogie-board, boy-toy Ozzie -- that Ken, at long last, was coming out of Barbie's closet.
"Ken has been a Gay conservative icon for years," stammered Slap, and this movie is an attack upon the conservative Gay and Lesbian community.
