A senior Capitol Hill source said that General Stanley McChrystal had tendered his resignation to President Barack Obama and that the White House is actively discussing a replacement who would be quickly confirmed by the Senate.
Possible successors are General James Mattis, the outgoing head of the US Joint Forces Command, who is and due to retire after being passed over as US Marine Corps commander. Lieutenant General William Caldwell, commander of Nato’s Training Mission in Afghanistan, is also being considered.
The Huffington Post has identified five new candiate commanders: two are Marines, two are Army and one is Navy. No Air Force candidate has been identified to replace General McChrystal.
