Newsy: Bush adminsitration missing emails recovered

December 20, 2009 03:59 PM

Public release is one thing. Rightardia suspects the Justice Department is already looking at the emails.

Anybody who thinks the loss of these emails was an accident underestimates the GOP. The GOP been involved in creepy crooked stuff like this for a long time. In addition, the White House was even using an private RNC email addresses to bypass public law on email archives.

President Bush's White House early on scrapped a custom archiving system that the Clinton administration had adopted under a federal court order.

From 2001 to 2003, the Bush White House thought it had recorded over computer backup tapes that provided a last line of defense for preserving e-mails, even though a similar practice landed the Clinton administration in legal trouble.

As a result, several years' worth of electronic communication could have been lost.  E-mails that documented administration actions in the run-up to the Iraq war were also missing.

The Bush administration's e-mail policies have been repeatedly challenged by lawmakers and open-government groups, in congressional hearings and in court.

Two groups, the National Security Archive and Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, have accused the White House in lawsuits of violating the Federal Records Act because of what they say is its failure to preserve millions of e-mails, a charge the White House rejects.

Watergate comes to mind as does the secret bugging of the Internet under the Patriot Act. Don't forget the torture of Islamic detainees, a cross border operation into Syria during the Iraq War, secret CIA prisons, or the illegal rendition of terrorist suspects off of the streets of Europe.

There will be some major embarrassments for the Bush administration that will be revealed. Executive privilege does not provide immunity for criminal acts.
