1. First, the Democratic party is oriented towards the needs of the middle class. The Republicans are concerned about the needs of the affluent and corporations.
2. The Democrats are more fiscally conservative. The Democrats have been able to balance the budget and cut deficits while the GOP has spent lavishly on the armed services and has increased the national debt and deficit since the Reagan era.
3. The Democrats are a big tent party that uses pragmatism to make decisions. The GOP is fuelled by ideology. Republicans do not support programs that don't fit well with their ideology. The GOP is more seeped in tradition and symbolic programs.
4. The Democrats prefer diplomacy to war. It is the other way around with the GOP.
5. Most of the programs that have helped people in tough times such as Social Security, Food Stamps, Unemployment Compensation and Medicare were developed by Democrats.
