Senate Democrats Need GOP-Style Discipline

09/17/09

Rightardia comment: Politics Daily is a new web site we are taking a look at. We agree with Politics Daily the thesis that the Dems need the political discipline to get the health care job done. This is easier said than done because the GOP is a far more homogeneous group than the 'big tent' Democrats.

The Baucus bill also proposes co-ops as a health care solution, but most co-ops in the US are small businesses that generate $5 to $10 million of annual income.

Co-ops cannot compete with the health care corporations and Baucus made no attempt to strengthen the co-ops. His bill could have changed in the law so  that co-ops that could operate across state lines. Jonathan Alter of Newsweek suggested that such a super co-op might be a good solution.

Sen. Max Baucus finally unveiled his long awaited, painstakingly negotiated health reform bill. Both Democrats and Republicans apparently view this as a mere starting point. No moderate Republican supports the bill and Sen. Jay Rockefeller said he will vote against it.

The Montana Democrat, who chairs the Senate Finance Committee and led months of bipartisan negotiations, had to release his bill Wednesday without one Republican on board.

Maybe Baucus hadn't yet seen statements from Senate GOP leader Mitch McConnell and House GOP leader John Boehner. Both McConnell and Boehner called the Baucus bill "partisan." McConnell further ripped it as a "thousand-page, trillion-dollar government program" that cuts Medicare and raises taxes on families and business.

Baucus' fellow Democrats, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, weighed in at tepid. Reid called the bill "another important piece to the puzzle" and said he looks forward to a "healthy and vigorous" committee debate. Pelosi said the House bill "clearly does more" to help people buy coverage and prescription drugs, and has a public insurance option that would compete with private plans.
