Rep. Eric Cantor, the Louisiana Republican, speaking to POLITICO on a day when President Barack Obama was meeting with Israeli and Palestinian leaders in New York, expressed a dim view of the White House’s Middle East policy, saying Obama doesn’t seem to be a “true friend” of the Jewish state. Of course, many political scientists such as John Mearsheimer and Stephen Walt have advocated more 'offensive realism' in the Middle East and a more neutral approach toward Israel.
The only Jewish Republican in Congress and one of Israel’s staunchest defenders on the Hill, Cantor said he was heartened by Tuesday’s meeting between Obama and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas. Cantor is the one of Israel’s staunchest defenders on the Hill with his neo-conservative views. Cantor said he was heartened by Tuesday’s meeting between Obama and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas.
Cantor is also concerned that Obama has not contacted the GOP House minority about Afghanistan troop strength that General McChrystal wants increased by 40,000 troops. Until Obama makes a policy decision on troop strength, such a conversation is not necessary.
Rightardia believes Israel must make concessions and follow UN resolutions for there to be peace. Israel must also stop harassing US citizens who are married to Palestinians and consider the unique dual citizenship that many American Jewish citizens enjoy. It is in the long term security interests of Israel to reach a peace agreement with Palestine.
