I moved from Canada to Colorado 15 years ago and love this state - but still struggle with the dismal results of the US health care system.

The unfortunately successful propaganda campaign by the US health care lobby industry is nothing short of shameful. My father, Gene, a retired automative worker who lives outside Windsor, Ontario, has suffered from diabetes for 30 years.

Beyond the management of his diabetes, he was amazingly healthy until his late 70s. At that time he suffered a series of health challenges; he needed - and RECEIVED - in a 6 month period 1) tendon surgery on his little finger 2) triple by-pass surgery for cardiovascular disease and 3) colon surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy for colon cancer.

Several years later he required two progressive partial foot amputations related to his diabetes. The in-home nursing care provided through the universal health care system allowed for a prompt discharge from the hospital with excellent wound recovery and reduced overall costs.

A year ago he suffered a signficant heart attack and was on life support for 2 days, in hospital for 3 weeks and received a stent in his cardiac artery prior to discharge. He has experienced excellent quality of life since.

My two children continue to know and love their grandfather as he celebrates his 89th birthday. My hope? That the good people of this great country will NOT be swayed by the health care industry lobby propaganda.

The premiums associated with employer provided health care "benefits" are higher than the taxes paid in countries such as Canada, and the results surpass those experienced by most US citizens ten-fold.
