Mittens explains the economic recovery using magical thinking

The Obama administration economic stimulus has a great deal to with the economic recovery.

In Europe, the governments there tried austerity and the voters have been turning out governments in France, Germany, Greece and Spain since.

Mittens contrarian view follows:

Now his campaign these days is trying to find a twig to hang on to, some little excuse they can grab and say, ‘Look, things are getting a little better, aren’t they?’ And the answer is yeah, things are getting a little better in a lot of places in this country, but it’s not thanks to his policies,” he said. “It’s in spite of his policies. You see, every recession ultimately comes to an end, but you’d expect that this deep recession might come back to an aggressive turnaround, but it didn’t happen.

Indeed, the Us is emerging from the Great Recession, but that's not due to any help from the GOP.

Mittens went on:

Government sees small business and big business as the enemy. We’re not the enemy,” Romney said. “Some of these liberals say they like a strong economy but then they act like they don’t like business. An economy is nothing but the collection of all of our businesses together. I want our government to support small business, middle-size business, big business. I want jobs. I want government that’s an ally of business not an enemy of business.

Government does see some business as the enemy: those that are too big to fail like the investment banks on Wall Street.

The Obama administration has never taken an adversary approach toward small business that it has provided a slew of tax breaks. The energy  industry, of course, is hardly small business.

Obama atack ad on Swiss Mitt

Published on May 1, 2012 by
Are you in? https://my.barackobama.com/swissbankad

"Swiss Bank Account" highlights Mitt Romney's belief that a strong economy is built on outsourcing, loopholes and risky financial deals. As a corporate CEO, he shipped American jobs to places like Mexico and China. As governor, Romney outsourced state jobs to India, and now as a candidate for president he is pushing tax breaks for companies that ship jobs overseas.

Romney's economic scheme stands in stark contrast with President Obama's efforts to continue moving the country forward by rebuilding an economy that's meant to last, by out-building, out-innovating and out-educating the rest of the world, and making the things the rest of the world buys by closing loopholes and providing incentives that are bringing jobs back to America.

New Presidential Momorandum could have a big impact on the VA

The presidential memorandum on record keeping could have a big impact on the Veteran Administration with its Byzantine records keeping approach. When a Veteran submits a claim, a claim file (c-file) is opened which is paper document.
The Major asked for a copy of his c-file more than two years ago. he finally got a copy from --of all places--the Board of Veterans Appeals. It was four volumes and arrived in four 1x1x1 foot boxes.
The VA has tried to automate, but the last big effort at Bay Pines, FL was a big flop. The computer mainframes and local area network didn't work. However,The Major has noticed scanners through out the VA in his last couple of visits.
Even submitting a claim or supporting evidence can be difficult. Most claims had to be mailed in or hand carried to the Veterans Center in the VA regional office. Claims can now be submitted online. However supporting evidence must either be mailed to the VA or had carried to the Veterans Center.
The VA does not provide email addresses or fax numbers.
Right now the Va has at least five different databases that VA workers must access to provide information on claims.
These databases need to integrated into a single database.
You can be certain government bureaucrats will be eager to comply after they get more funds for the automation.
From the WH Blog:
Federal records are crucial to documenting the history of our national experience –the problems, the triumphs, and the challenges.
Records provide a prism through which future generations will view, understand, and learn from the actions of the current generation. A sensible system of records management is the backbone of open government.
For many decades, the framework for records management has been based on an approach developed in the middle of the twentieth century, involving paper and filing cabinets. Things are of course very different today. In the digital age, when many records are made and maintained in electronic form, we have extraordinary opportunities to improve records management. . .

GOP: Don't confuse me with the facts on the economy

The Washington Post
By Lori Montgomery, Monday, February 28, 9:45 AM

A Republican plan to cut the federal budget  this would destroy 700,000 jobs through 2012, according to an independent economic analysis  that will be  released Monday.

The report, by Moody’s Analytics chief economist Mark Zandi, offers fresh ammunition to Democrats seeking block the Republican plan. The GOP plan would terminate dozens of programs and slash federal appropriations by $61 billion over the next seven months.

Zandi, an architect of the 2009 stimulus package and has advised both political parties. Zandai was an economic advisor to John McCain during the 2008presidnetial elections.

Zandi predicts that the GOP package would reduce economic growth by 0.5 percentage points this year, and by 0.2 percentage points in 2012, resulting in 700,000 fewer jobs by the end of next year.

His report is similar to an analysis last week by the investment bank Goldman Sachs.  It predicted that the Republican spending cuts would cause even greater damage to the economy, slowing growth by as much as 2 percentage points in the second and third quarters of this year.

Republicans have dismissed both reports, calling them the product of the same flawed economic thinking that produced President Obama’s $814 billion stimulus package . . .

Rightardia is not aware of any macroeconomic theory that suggests governments should cut spending during an economic crises.

That is what a business would do, not what a government does according to Keynesian economics, which is a widely embraced macroeconomic theory.

Are the Republican trying to stall the recovery for political gain in 2012? Or are thy just too pigheaded to see the "forest thorough the tress?"

Be aware that the two studies are from private enterprise, not the Government Accounting Office or the Congressional Budget office.

Gallup: Americans perceive China as top economic power

by Lydia Saad

PRINCETON, NJ - By 52% to 32%, Americans are more likely to name China than the United States as the leading economic power in the world today.

Japan is a distant third at 7%. In a China Daily article, Japan confirmed that the Chinese economy surpassed it.

Japan's real GDP expanded 3.9 percent in the calendar year in the first annual growth in three years, but it wasn't enough to hold off a surging China.

Japan's nominal GDP last year came to $5.4742 trillion, less than China's total of $5.8786 trillion, the Cabinet Office said.

This is China's strongest lead on this Gallup measure, first asked in 2000, and is a major change from 2009, when China and the U.S. were nearly tied in Americans' perceptions about the leading economic power.

However, the US is still the top economic power in the world. China will eventually surpass the US, but the per capita income of a Chinese person is far smaller than his or her US counterpart. This is due to the large population of China. The US per capita is $47,133. In Red China it is $7400.

At least Americans are starting to get more realistic about their "exceptionalism."  The US cannot rest on a countries laurels in this competitive world.

The US needs to constantly improve and not be lulled by right wing nationalistic mythology.
