CryptLogon: US police ready to rumble with military equipment

Rightardia has written several articles on this topic. Not only do the police departments have machines guns, grenade launchers and armored vehicles, they have access to sensitive intelligence technology that can track and bug your home, car and cell phone.

"The buying spree has transformed local police departments into small, army-like forces, and put intimidating equipment into the hands of civilian officers.

And that is raising questions about whether the strategy has gone too far, creating a culture and capability that jeopardizes public safety and civil rights while creating an expensive false sense of security."

Is Carrier IQ evil?

I read a farly laughable article by Lance Ulanoff of Mashable Tech who suggested carrier IQ rootkit is misunderstood and not evil.

Ulanoff compared the software to Dr. Watson which is Microsoft diagnostic software that ran in the background in older versions of Windows . Watson is  as a process that user's could disable.

Dr. Watson did not keep track of URL that a user typed in or a user's location. Carrier IQ can be used a key logger that keeps track of every user keystroke.

One recent You tube video suggests that Carrier IQ cannot be turned off. Other articles suggest this software ins installed on 150 million phones and many other models besides the IPhone and Android

One cellphone user  found a tool online to stop Carrier IQ. However, after disabling Carrier IQ, the HTC IQ Agent was still running. This suggests that when you force the program off,  it automatically restarts.

Who would be the biggest beneficiary of this technology? Certainly, the FBI could use it in federal criminal cases and the CIA could use it to spy on the cell phones of suspected terrorists and other belligerents.

The biggest beneficiary would be the police. Police in Michigan and elsewhere have been asking for cell phones during traffic stops and cloning the contents. The data from HTC IQ  malware could undoubtedly be useful to the police.

However, without a warrant, the police have no right to scan your cell phone.

Why do the police now have technology like this?

It's because the intelligence agencies shared their secrets with the police courtesy of the Patriot Act. In the past this technology could only be used against American citizens in very special situations.

Police are using warrantless GPS tracking devices on vehicles

Look for one of these under your car

Wired has reported on these before and a young man in California found two of these  on his SUV.

If you have a cell phone that supports GPS (most do), the police can track you through your cell phone and likely listen to your calls with the Harris Kingfish system.

Rightardia  got this information on the harris Kingfish from a US Army sole-source contract solicitation.

*Harris KingFish, 1-Channel, Dual Mode Package systems that can be operated in two separate modes; Man-Portable and Vehicular Mounted. The Man-Portable system mode is battery powered CDMA, GSM and iDEN Interrogation Tracking and Location, and Signal Information Collection System. The Vehicular Mounted system mode is portable, 12VDC powered CDMA, GSM, iDEN Interrogation, Tracking and Location, and Signal Information Collection System.

The term "Signal Information Collection System" suggests Kingfish can do more than just track you. It suggests the police can eavesdrop in you intimate phone conversations. Another Harris WGS system, Amberjack can direction find the phone.and determine how far the phone is from a squad car by silently dialing your phone.
The information that Kingfish collects is so sensitive that the police destroy all of it prior to a trial so the capabilities of the system won't be disclosed in a trail.

Rightardia suggests you use a low cost Tracfone when you travel. Most of them don't contain a GPS chip, but read the phone's spec before you purchase.

You can also pull the battery out of you cell phone to increase secruity and replace it when you are finished with your business.

Republican themes that are faith and inequality based

The GOP has numerous themes that it has foisted on the public. Let's take a look at them.

Free market: A belief in the 18th century free market system of the Founders. Of course, at that time , coporations were few and had very limited legal rights

Autocratic leadership style.  Government and corpoations are very different. Many corporate leaders use a top down command and control model borrowed from the US military  Government leaders are often more democratic and seek consensus and use a more collegial approach to problem solving and decision making.

Only corporate leaders should be in government. A corollary of free enterprise is that only people who have worked in corporations are the only ones fit to lead this nation. Republican free enterprise leaders like Calvin Coolidge, Herbert Hoover and GW Bush led us into the Great Depression and the Great Recession. Yet job growth and deficit reduction has been far better when Democrat presidents were leading the nation.

Religious based values. Many Republicans have suggested a real American has to believe in God, although the Constitution, notably, the First Amendment, says otherwise. Many "family values" that the GOP has on sex education based on abstinence, and on Planned Parenthood display a religious bias.

Emphasis on defense and the police. Defense and policed protection are also critical to Republicans and conservatives. Both are means of social control and the GOP is hypersensitive on protecting private property, even it it means blowing away a few 'undesirable immigrants. ' After all, Republicans own most of the private property in the US.

Is anyone surprised that defense spending increased by 40 per cent since 911 and the Department of Homeland Security and the police now have unprecedented powers? The GOP likes it that way. This is also the reason the GOP is adamantly opposed to gun control and has passed concealed carry laws in several states.

Corporate "in the box" Career. The GOP wants Americans to live in the box they say the Founders built that has benefited the affluent prior to the Great Depression and again starting in the Reagan era. They want to bring you into the box when you are 20 and throw you out of the box 30 years later. That's when you are older and making too much money and before you are eligible for a corporate pension.

The Republicans attack programs like Social Security and Medicare which are there because of these corporate shortfalls. The GOP corporatists know only one in five Americans will retire with a pension, yet they constantly attack Social Security as being a Ponzi scheme.

Zero sum Game. Although the GOP claims it has a strong religious values, it plays a zero sum game that works like this. The US has an economic systems in which 15 per cent of the population is in poverty so one per cent can live like emperors or kings.

Republicans say what is wrong with that? That's the American way.

This US is the fifth most unequal nation in the world according to Alan Grayson. Politifact called his statement true. This is a dubious honor for a first world industrial nation but it is unlikely that few Republicans are bothered by this fact.

Inequality is the GOP American Dream. Marco Rubio said as much!

Cryptome: Police can track your cell phone using Harris Stingray and Kingfish technology

Police can now track your cell phone and collect your cell phone conversations from a squad car. They can also locate (direction find (DF)) a particular cell phone user. Apparently, the Miami police department is interested in the new technology.

Federal authorities pursued a man they called simply “the Hacker” for more than a year.Only after using a cellphone-tracking device—a Stingray—were they able to catch him.

Stingrays are designed to locate mobile phones even when it’s not being used to make a call.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation considers the devices to be critical and it has a policy of deleting the data gathered so the capabilities of the system aren't disclosed.

A stingray works by mimicking a cellphone tower, calling a phone and measuring signals from the phone.

It lets the stingray operator “ping,” or send a signal to, a phone and locate (DF) it as long as it is powered. The device has various uses, including helping police locate suspects and aiding search-and-rescue.

The Armed Services have been using devices like this to locate terrorists who use cell phones. Once the caller is identified, a Predator UAV strike may follow.

The government says “stingray” is a generic term but Harris Industries markets such a device called the Stingray and a similar device called the Kingfish. The DF equipment is called AmberJack.
