Al Jazeera English: Neo-Nazis, gangs and criminals in the US military

The Palm Centre, an official research unit of University of California at Santa Barbara, said:

The data indicate that from 2003 through 2006, the military allowed 4,230 convicted felons to enlist under the 'moral waivers' programme... In addition, 43,977 individuals convicted of serious misdemeanors such as assault were permitted to enlist under the moral waivers programme during that period, as were 58,561 illegal drug abusers. In the Army, allowable offenses include making terrorist threats, murder, and kidnapping.

Has the US marine Corps become a Bushido cult?

San Francisco
— Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates is ordering a review of the future role of the Marine Corps amid " anxiety" that the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan had turned the service into a "second land army."

The review would seek to define a 21st century combat mission for the Marines that is distinct from the Army's, because the Marines "do not want to be, nor does America need" another ground combat force . . .

The mission of the Marines has always been amphibious assault from a US Navy Task force  which is usually a Carrier Task Force (CTF). Once the beach head is taken, the US Army takes over.

'Once a Marine, always a Marine. This is real motto of the Marine Corps because new marines are heavily indoctrinated with militaristic values.

One of the major's friends has a child in the Marine corps and he has told his mother he would like nothing better than to die for is county with the American flag draped over his coffin.

This is not the objective of any the Armed Services for soldiers, sailors, airmen or marines to die for their country. As General George S. Patton, Jr stated:

No bastard ever won a war by dying for his country. He won it by making the other poor dumb bastard die for his country.

Bushidō means "Way of the Warrior", is a name in common usage since the late 19th century which is used to describe a uniquely Japanese code of conduct adhered to by samurai since time immemorial, and loosely analogous to Western concepts of chivalry

This code is said to have emphasized virtues such as loyalty, honor, obedience, duty, filial piety, and self-sacrifice.

During World War 2, the Japanese considered the surrender of US forces in the Philippines disgraceful. Under Bushido the US soldiers would have fought to their death or committed suicide.

This is why the Marines and Army had to exterminate the Japanese in the Pacific: they would not surrender, but would mount foolish Banzai charges into machine guns. The Banzai charge was part of the Bushido culture.

The problem with the Japanese military was it was very predictable. It used the same tactics over and rover again. If a wingman was shot down in a flying formation, another Japanese aircraft would dutifully move into to take its place.

USAAF pilots would promptly shoot the replacement plane down. The point is that you need flexibility in war. it is not like football game in which you execute a series of pre-planned plays like the Japanese did.

Tactics must constantly evolve and change. Improvisation often wins battles.

When you heavily indoctrinate people, they don't think, they react which may be an advantage in the early stages of a war. However, the Marine corps should realize that the Bushido mentality is limiting.

Marines  only have to look back at their experiences with the Japanese in WW2 to realize that an over indoctrinated soldier is a limitation.

The Japanese believed the fighting spirit of their soldier would overcome equipment limitations. The Marine Corp has had a similar problem often received hand me down equipment form the Army. This problem relates to the limited staff skills of many Marline officers.

The Japanese went into battle with inferior rifles, pistols, mortars and machine guns. Their troops paid a heavy price for their Bushido mentality.

Rightardia hope the US Marine corps is smarter than the Japanese were.

Obama will be a wussy if he doesn't fire McChrystal

Obama should not only fire General McChrystal, he should demote him.

Obama  will lose the respect of both Democrats. Republicans and the Armed Services if McChrystal is not severely disciplined. Obama needs to make an example of this general.

Don't Get Mad, Get Even

The Democrats need to start playing hardball with some of these recalcitrant GOP senators and other politicians.

One way to even scores is close some militarily installations: The contribution of the Navy and the Air Force have been limited in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. The Obama administration could close some Navy and Air Force installations with little impact on the overall mission of the Armed Services.

Some states that the Obama administration should take a hard look at are Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee and Texas.

Oklahoma seems to have an excess of ignorant politicians who need some object lessons. Ditto for South Carolina, the state that started the Civil War. Tennessee has become a hot bed or racism. Texas is bloated with military installations form the Johnson era. Below are some of the installations that could be considered for closure.

Oklahoma
Altus AFB, OK
Fort Sill, OK
McAlester Army Ammo, OK
Tinker AFB, OK
Vance AFB, OK

South Carolina
Charleston AFB, SC
Fort Jackson, SC
MCAS Beaufort, SC
MCRD Parris Island, SC
NWS Charleston, SC
Shaw AFB, SC

Tennessee
Arnold AFB, TN
NSA Mid-South, TN

Texas
Brooks AFB, TX
Dyess AFB, TX
Fort Bliss, TX
Fort Hood, TX
Fort Sam Houston, TX
Goodfellow AFB, TX
Kelly AFB, TX
Lackland AFB, TX
Laughlin AFB, TX
NAS Corpus Christi, TX
NAS JRB Fort Worth, TX
NAS Kingsville, TX
NS Ingleside, TX
Randolph AFB, TX
Red River Army Depot, TX
Sheppard AFB, TX

Turnabout is fair play. Make the right wing bleed. Perhaps they will grow up.

Rightardia has mentioned before that its the Red States that are the recipient states of the federal revenue largess. The Armed Services pump billions of federal dollars into the Red States. The majority of Americans who don't pay taxes in the US also live in the Red States.

Major Stefan Cook should be dismissed from the Army

Ed Schultz is correct. Ths man volunteered for Afghanistan and then ran into court suggesting that Obama was not the Commander in Chief because he wasn't born in the US. Major Stefan Frederick Cook, USAR  should be tried under Article 133, UCMJ, for conduct unbecoming an officer and a gentleman. He should be court martialed and dismissed from the Army Reserve.

He is a disgrace to the Armed Services.

Racism stems from top commanders in the US Armed Forces

An American race-hate watchdog claims there's growing neo-Nazi activity within the country's armed forces.

The Southern Poverty Law Center wants Congress to look into its findings that dozens of military personnel are registered on a social network that identifies itself as white supremacist and that homosexuals are being thrown out, despite rules to the contrary.

It is extremely hard to learn exactly how far the problem extends. US servicemen returning from Iraq and Afghanistan say that the issue is very widespread and extremism and racism are rife in the US military.

Some believe the problem stems from the top commanding officials who express such views. These kinds of attitudes are trickling down to the general soldiery, who are beginning to behave the same way, and exactly because the problem of extremism is so widespread, it is going to be hard to root it out.

This issue has been around for several years now. The Bush administration failed to do anything about it. The Pentagon acknowledged in a 2008 report that the problem of racism has really become serious in the US military.

Very serious approaches from the top need to be taken in order to tackle the problem. However, so far analysts have been saying that the US military really has adopted the “don’t ask – don’t tell” approach.

Whether the call of the Southern Poverty Law Centre, which monitors right wing militia and racist groups in the US, will be heard or not in Washington DC remains to be seen.
