WIN: U.S. postal service under the Senate review

The U.S. Senate was poised Wednesday to vote on an overhaul of the U.S. Postal Service.

The National Association of Letter Carriers opposes SB 1789 unless amendments are added that preserve door-to-door and Saturday mail delivery and end the requirement that the Postal Service spend $5 billion a year pre-funding retirement accounts.

That requirement and the Great Recession are largely to blame for the postal service deficits.

The letter carriers union says unless amended the Senate bill would slowly dismantle the postal service and wipe out as many as 200,000 jobs.
