Newsy: Allen West calls the Progressive Democratic Caucus communist

BY LOGAN TITTLE

Florida GOP Representative Allen West made headlines after pulling a regular Joseph McCarthy when he said this—

“I believe there’s about 70, 80 to 81 members of the Democratic Party who are members of the Communist Party.” (Video: FL18RawFootage)

But the closet-Communist claim wasn’t all he had in mind.  West went on to tell the crowd — President Obama is “scared” of him.

So, who exactly is Allen West? He’s a Florida Congressman, a former military man, and a Tea Party darling. New York Magazine reports political figures like Herman Cain and Sarah Palin have recently advocated West as Mitt Romney’s running mate.  (Video: CNN)

But the Washington Post’s Chris Cillizza told MSNBC, with comments like these, he may not stand a chance of being selected.

“One of the most amazing story lines I’ve heard…is all these people including Sarah Palin floating Allan West for VP. Reason 6,421 why West won’t be the vice president is right there…this is West in a nutshell.”

KCNC points out it’s not the first time the Congressman has been so outspoken—

“In February, West … warned of a ‘second Holocaust’ if Israel doesn’t have the backing of the United States… West told a crowd in January that … Harry Reid … Nancy Pelosi, and … Debbie Wasserman Schultz should ‘get the hell out of the United States of America.’”

And while West’s rather rambunctious track record has caused quite a bit of controversy in the news — his Democratic opponent Patrick Murphy wasn’t fazed by the communist comments.  He told the Palm Beach Post—West just likes to make waves.

“The bottom line is, Allen West is trying to make it in the press with comments that don’t even make sense… He’s trying to make headlines, get a rise out of people and not get anything done.”

West won his House seat in 2010 with 54 percent of the vote.

West is high on a DCCC hit list. We hope Florida voters have the wisdom to remove this extremist from office.
