15:08 17/12/2009 The S-400 Triumf (SA-21 Growler) is designed to intercept and effectively engage airborne targets, including stealth aircraft, cruise and ballistic missiles, at ranges of up to 3,500 kilometers (2,200 miles) and speeds of up to 4.8 kilometers (3 miles) per second.>>
Russia will place several new S-400 Triumf air defense systems near its borders in 2012.

Air Force Commander Alexander Zelin said.

The Russian Armed Forces will receive several S-400 air defense systems this year. This time they will be deployed in air defense units guarding [Russia’s] border regions.
Russia currently has two S-400 regiments protecting the airspace around Moscow.

Zelin did not specify the deployment locations for new S-400 units, but some of them will most likely be placed in the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad as part of the response to the planned European missile shield initiative.

Moscow considers the European missile shield initiative as a threat to its national security.

Many analysts consider this system to be superior to the US Patriot missile system.
