US should abstain from voting on Palestinian statehood

Cartoons — State of confusion: Obama backpedals on Palestine

President Barack Obama is balancing between promised statehood to Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas last year and also giving his word to Israeli President Benjamin Netanyahu to torpedo the bid of the Palestinian Autonomy for independence.

Obama has personally sworn to veto any resolution recognizing a free and independent Palestinian state because he claims the UN is not the right place for a new state to be born.

Now the Quartet, the US and its EU allies, is suggesting a peace agreement must be a prerequisite to Palestinian statehood.

The UN is actually a perfect palce for a new state to be born and Israel has had 60 years to reach a peace agreement and has failed. Both Palestine and the US have major concessions to Israel which Israel rejected.

Israel and Palestine should agree to disagree.

The US position on Palestinian statehood is ludicrous. A US abstention on the vote in the Security Council is the smartest thing to do. Obama owes Benjamin Netanyahu no favors.

Let the GOP Congress shriek. The executive branch makes foreign policy, not Congress.
