Rick Scott attacks anthropology and journalism degrees

Rick Scott has never been a fan of anthropology. He recently said this in Tallahassee:

I got accused of not liking anthropologists the other day. But just think about it, how many more jobs do think there are for anthropologists in the state?
Do you want to use your tax dollars to educate more people who can’t get jobs in anthropology? I don’t. I want to make sure that we spend our dollars where people can get jobs when they get out.

Scott also asked a reporter about the value of a degree in journalism.

Scott believes that Florida’s economy would be better served if state universities spent less time teaching social sciences.  He wants more courses like math and technology.

Why would Scott want to eliminate anthropology and journalism degrees in the Florida collegiate system?

Scott is and evangelical and, of course, evolution is discussed in anthropology. But anthropology  has two major branches: physical and cultural. The cultural side is less concerned with evolution.

As a Herald Tribune writer pointed out "anthropology is alive and well in the workplace and not just in the hallowed halls of academia."

Jornalism, also called mass communications in some college curricula, is a broad area that includes br0adcasting, film making, photo journalism advertising, marketing and other disciplines.

Republicans like Scott and Jeb Bush have been tinkering with public education for more than a decade and have not gotten positive results. Primary and secondary schools have been closing around Florida. The Florida public school system is a mess with the closed schools and waves of teacher layoffs!
