Ubuntu 11.04, Natty Narwahl, is a kluge

The current release of Ubuntu Linux is called the Natty Narwahl.

Ubuntu indicates it abandoned the Gnome desktop because the releases were coming out too late, but one of the Linux magazines suggested that Gnome eats up a lot of Linux profits with its licensing fees.

Natty Narwahl is supposed to look like this

The Ubuntu Unity interface was supposed to look Mac like but the icons on our desktop ended up on the left side. In addition, Ubuntu continued with the maximize, minimize and close button on the left side of an application which is great if you are left handed.

The Linux aplets (system tray in Windows) were also gone and Rightardia could not longer easily check the weather, check the system , delete trash or connect to the Network Attached Storage (NAS) server.

Ubuntu used the Byobu terminal  (command line utility ) that required the God-awful VI type of keyboarding to mark and move text. You have got to be kidding!

We couldn't find a screenshot utility ether that we need to publish the Rightardia blog.

We then tried the current version of Fedora next, v14, it doesn't come with the Fluendo multi-media codecs. We installed the codecs and a GStreamer plug-in , but Adobe falsh still didn't work.

Arrgh!

We gave up on Fedora which showed a lot more promise thatn Natty Narwahl and retuned to Ubuntu 10.10. The current version of Linix Mint which is now Debian based, would probalbly have worked ,too,

Our recommendation: avoid Ubuntu Linux 11.14 like the plague. We hated it!
