Political reset: What do those -isms really mean.

First of all, the American revolution and French revolution were fueled by liberal thought. Liberal thought, in fact, is older than conservative thought.

Liberalism first became a powerful force in the Age of Enlightenment, rejecting several assumptions of government such as hereditary status, established religion, absolute monarchy, and the Divine Right of Kings.

John Locke is often credited for the creation of classic liberalism as a distinct philosophical tradition. In the 20th century, social liberalism also developed.

Locke advocated the concept of natural rights and the social contract to argue that the rule of law should replace absolutism in government and that leaders  were subject to the consent of the governed. Private individuals had a fundamental right to life, liberty, and property are central liberal ideas.

When Bill Maher called the Founders a "liberal elite" he was on the mark. Most of the Founders were liberals with the exception of Federalists like Alexander Hamilton.

Conservatism is a political and social philosophy that promotes the maintenance of traditional institutions and supports, at the most, minimal and gradual change in society. Some conservatives seek to preserve things as they are, emphasizing stability and continuity, while others oppose modernism and seek a return to the way things were. thus preserving the status quo.

Socialism is an economic system in which the means of production are publicly or commonly owned and controlled co-operatively, or a political philosophy advocating such a system.

Fascism is a radical, authoritarian nationalist political ideology. Fascists advocate the creation of a totalitarian single-party state that seeks the mass mobilization of a nation through indoctrination, physical education, and family policy including eugenics.

Fascists believe that a nation requires strong leadership, singular collective identity, and the will and ability to commit violence and wage war in order to keep the nation strong.

Italian Fascism's economy was based on corporatism. A number of other fascist movements similarly promoted corporatism. Oswald Mosley of the British Union of Fascists, describing fascist corporatism, said that "it means a nation organized as the human body, with each organ performing its individual function but working in harmony with the whole.

Syndicalism is a type of economic system proposed as a replacement for capitalism and an alternative to state socialism, which uses federations of collectivized trade unions or industrial unions. Sydicalism is associated with fascist thought in which the state had centralized control of these unions.

Fascism has been described as economic corporatism. Corporatism and fascism are considered synonyms by many political writers.

Statism (or etatism) is a term in political philosophy either emphasizing the role of the state in analyzing political change; or, in describing political movements which support the use of the state to achieve goals.

The term is sometimes used to refer to state capitalism or highly-regulated market economies with large amounts of government intervention.

Communism is a political movement that aims for a classless and stateless society structured upon common ownership of the means of production, free access to articles of consumption, and the end of wage labour and private property in the means of production and real estate.

Rightrdia considers communism and fascism to be opposite political philosophies which collided during World War 2. in which German fascism was a reaction to Russian communism. The Russians advocated a socialistic economic system while the Germans advocated a corporatist capitalistic model.

Both the Russians and the Germans used centralized statist governments directed by dictators. Dictatorships are statist governments that exist on both the left and right.

Both communist and fascist governments used collectivist organizations. Collective farms, corporations, and trade unions are all examples of collectivist organizations. On the left, such organizations would be described as "socialist," On the right, the term "syndicalist" is used.

The biggest difference between socialism and fascism is that socialism is an international moment that embraces different nationalities and ethnic groups and usually deemphasizes religion. Fascism is national in scope and embraces a homogeneous national, patriotic, ethnic and religious identity and often racial supremacy of the majority.

Some key concepts in this article are that liberalism is an old philosophy that existed centuries before socialistic thought. Both communism and fascism use collectivist organizations that use statist centralized governments. Dictators can be communist or fascist.

Historically, the US has preferred to work with the fascist dictors like Anastasio Somoza, Augusto Pinochet, Fulgencio Batista,Sukarno and Hosni Mubarek.
