NEW DELHI, May 17 (RIA Novosti) Pakistani News daily said on Tuesday, quoting an anonymous source that the new acting leader of al Qaeda had been identified: Egyptian-born Saif al-Adel. The paper said al-Adel was a close ally of al Qaeda's ideologist, Ayman al-Zawahiri, and was responsible for the network's international contacts. Al-Zawahir was the number two man but not well-respected in the movement because he is a control freak and also only places Egyptians in key positions.
According to the daily, al-Adel was appointed at an urgent meeting of al Qaeda's commanders. The term "acting" implies a temporary appointment.
Bin Laden was killed on May 2 in the Pakistani town of Abbottabad, north of the capital Islamabad, during a raid by U.S. Navy Seals.
