We Are One Today, Defending The Dignity Of Labor

- 04/04/11

By Doug Cunningham

We Are One pro-labor events are happening nationwide today to mark the anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s assassination in Memphis. When he was struck down Dr. King was fighting to defend workers and to uphold the dignity of work in the AFSCME Memphis sanitation workers strike. Today millions of people are mobilizing to fight for that same dignity against anti-union attacks on the basic rights of public workers.

[Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.]: “So often we overlook the words and the significance of those who are not in professional jobs, of those who are not in the so-called big jobs. But let me say to you tonight that whenever you are engaged in work that serves humanity and is for the building of humanity it has dignity and it has worth. You are reminding not only Memphis but you are reminding the nation that it is is a crime for people to live in this rich nation and receive starvation wages.”
