More email from the Austrolopithecus

 Inter-species communication problem

I got another long, rambling email on drugs and guns from the Australopithecus.

The Major has learned from dealing with rightards in his family that a political discussion with conservatives is a waste of time.

I have written articles about Lawrence Kohlberg and his theory of Moral Development before.

Lawrence Kohlberg was a Jewish American psychologist born in Bronxville, New York, who served as a professor at the University of Chicago, as well as Harvard University.

He specialized in research on moral education and reasoning, he is best known for his theory of stages of moral development.

A close follower of Jean Piaget's theory of cognitive development, Kohlberg's work reflected and extended his Piaget's ideas, creating a new field within psychology: "moral development".

In an empirical study by Haggbloom et al. using six criteria, such as citations and recognition, Kohlberg was found to be the 30th most eminent psychologist of the 20th century.

Kohlbeg beleived that all people could be classified as pre-conventional, conventional and post-conventional.

Most pre-conventional people were children who had not yet leaned social norms. Conventionals are in the box types who either accepted the values of a group or they were adapted to higher level social norms.

The conventional person tends to look at morality as something that is in cement.

Post-conventional people are out-of-the -box and thought in more of a contractual perceptive in which everything is negotiable and laws can be changed.

Kohlberg's stages of Moral development

Charles Hampden turner published his Doctoral Thesis in the book ‘Radical Man’ in 1969. Turner used conventional in the context of conservative; and post-conventional in the context of liberal.

One of the most important findings of Kohlberg was that higher level post-conventionals could understand the moral arguments of conservatives because they had "been there, done that."

Few conservatives could follow the moral reasoning of the higher level post-conventional.

Many conservatives see liberal and progressive thought as ideology rather than as moral reasoning and believe colleges produce card carrying progressives.

Colleges do, in fact, teach young people who to think about the world and open their eyes to many conventional values that are circumspect.

However, Kohlberg pointed out that people did not really develop true post-conventional thinking until they were in their mid-thirties.

What is the point of this discussion?

It's simple, arguments with most conservatives are a waste of time. Some of them will be able to understand your view point, but most will not.

It's like arguing with an Australopithecus. It's to hard for the caveman to get it, unlike the Geico commercials about cavemen.

In this case, the caveman just doesn't get it!

Here is how the conversation ended with the rightard. He thinks I will give him more information because he is "pulling up my background." He then says I am a liar and should be ashamed.

The Australopithecus should be ashamed of his poor grammar and spelling.

If you think I am going to give you more information, you are mistaken. I know who I am and I have a good idea who you are. If you had spent any-time on this blog you would know that I don't have to fabricate my background. Go to sleep and bug someone else.
