HBO: Bill Maher Overtime 03/04/2011

Ep. 204: March 4, 2011 - Overtime

Bill Maher thinks we need to spend more tax dollars on children  and less on seniors. We have one staffer who receives Social Security and he said:

I have been working since I was 13 and paid into Social Security since I was 15. Social Security is hardly welfare.

It is funded by the FICA tax and I have been paying about 6 per cent of my income into the Social Security trust fund for more than 45 years.

I don't think this is an either/or scenario in which seniors need to have their benefits cuts to help kids.

The affluent need to pay more in income tax and capital gains tax . The Estate Tax needs to be reformed to apply to millionaires. Use these revenues to help kids.

Maher is correct that we need more programs to help kids and young people. The most vulnerable people in our society are the young and the elderly.
