Gov. Scott Walker, another wingnut governor
The Governor has asked that his measures, which would essentially undermine collective bargaining in the state of Wisconsin, to be passed this week by the Republican controlled legislature, possibly without a public hearing.
The only collective bargaining that would be left if Walker’s measures pass would be regarding salaries and salaries above the consumer price index would need to go to referendum.
Workers would no longer be required to pay dues to unions and salaries would be negotiated yearly.
Even as they watch their wages freeze, state workers would also need to contribute 5.8 percent of salaries toward pension costs and twice as much as they’re currently paying to health insurance.
Workers at the state’s universities would completely lose the right to organize.
Last, but not least, Walker is also proposing to provide unilateral powers to the Department of Health Services when it comes to Medicaid.
The department would have the authority to make changes without seeking approval in the legislature and also make decisions outside of the current laws.
Walker knows his ideas are controversial.
In response to critics, Gov. Walker stated that he has briefed the Wisconsin National Guard and is fully prepared to deploy the Guard against any protest in the wake of this announcement.
Walker is punishing state workers for an economic downturn caused by private enterprise. Republican governor Rick Scott is doing the same thing in Florida.
