The Palestinian authority (PA) resignations came amid calls for reform in the Arab world. This was triggered by a revolts in Tunisia and Egypt, and by the ouster of Hosni Mubarak, the Egyptian president.
The announcement follows the resignation of Saeb Erekat, the Palestine Liberation Organisation's chief negotiator. He was apparently the source of the Palestine Papers, a set of leaked documents that was released by Al Jazeera.
The leaks showed the concessions that Palestinian negotiators were willing to grant to Israel, contrary to their public posture. One of the concessions ceded most of East Jerusalem to Israel.
The Palestinian Authority has a limited mandate in the occupied West Bank. It lost control of the Gaza Strip to the rival group, Hamas, in a 2007 civil war and also lost the last elections to Hamas. Both Israel and the Us consider Hamas a terrorist organization.
