Newsy.com: Russia and Japan fight over the Kuriles

Multisource political news, world news, and entertainment news analysis by Newsy.com

This is an interesting story because the Soviet Union occupied the Kurile Islands near the end of World War 2 and Russia and Japan have never signed a peace treaty.

The Russians had wanted the US to open up a second front in Europe to take pressure off of the Red Army.
The US also wanted the Russians to engage the Japanese in the Pacific.

Although the Russians had decisively defeated the Japnese in Mongolia in 1939, they actaully moved 50 divisions from the Far East to the Eastern Front to defeat the Nazi Wehmacht.

The Russians only did this when intelligence indicated the Japanese were not going to attack Russia.
